Two place 4th in individuals Students go to state in UIL We can do it! That was drama and debate teacher Taffy Geisel's assessment of the One- Act Play's chances of making it to state in February. Three months later, her prediction became reality. The cast of the One-Act Play I Never Sang For My Father by Robert Anderson and five other students advanced to the University Interscholastic League's 76th Annual State Championships for drama and academic events, May 8 through 10 at the University of Texas at Austin. The One-Act Play cast shared championships with Boswell High School at the district, area and regional levels. Representing District 7AAAA, Keller and Boswell were two of only eight AAAA plays in Texas to qualify for state. The schools performed May 9 at the UT-Austin Performing Arts Center Concert Hall. Senior Barry Yandell won a spot on the State AAAA All-Star Cast for his performance. In addition to Yandell, the cast of I Never Sang For My Father included Kelly Perkins, Scot Lackey, Kristin Blevins, Traci Grissom, Angie Percifield, Andy Criss and Danyah Arafat. Crew members included Iris Perez, Becky Timms and Tammy Cline. Alternates were Kelly Grissom and Carey johnson. Other state UIL competitors included Baronda Wilson, ready writing, Debbie Yaniko, extemporaneous informative speaking, Bryon Sutherland and Mari Felton, team debate, and Bobby Ross, news writing and headline writing. Coached by Mrs. Dorris Worsham, the District 7AAAA and Region ZAAAA readywriting champion, placed fourth in state. The District 7AAAA runner-up and Region ZAAAA champion informative speaker, Yaniko also received a fourth place in state. Winning two rounds and losing one, Sutherland and Felton narrowly missed a spot in the state final four in team debate. The two were District 7AAAA champions and Region ZAAAA runner-ups. Advised by Ms. Janie Crane, Ross tied for seventh place in the state in news writing and headline writing. He was the District 7AAAA and Region ZAAAA runner-up in headline writing. Of the thousands of Texas students that entered UIL Spring Meet Com- petition in April, less than two percent qualified for the state championships in May. - BOBBY ROSS, NAN LEE and LOREE VARDAS. Dedication - Coach Marc Dick explains yet another point of Physics to his class during a discussion. fx ' ,,-ff X X.,-0-H ex Bug in my frog Math, science teachers show enthusiasm There's a bug in my frog! Although science classes were faced with many problems, lack of enthusiasm on the part of the teachers was not one of them. You get a chance to talk to everyone and make them believe something they didn't want to believe before, Coach Danny Quick said of his class. His main goal was for all students to get a firm foundation in higher level sciences which he ac- complished through lectures, questions from the book and labs. The labs fell in the general category between chemicals and sun- tanning, unlike Mrs. Nina Outlaw's Honors Biology class which dissected earthworms and frogs. When asked if she enjoyed teaching honors biology, she said, Oh, I love it! because biology is the study of life and life is so interesting! Her students seem to share her enthusiasm for the subject. I liked learning about diabetes, said sophomore Russell Cave. Sophomore Mike Minter said on a lighter note that cutting up frogs was his favorite part of Honors Biology. Another science class offered was anatomy which Mrs. Outlaw also taught. She found it rewarding because, It's an elective 152 Math, Science that people are taking because they want to go on in that field. I can really enjoy it because I can relate to it. There were five science classes offered this year: Physical Science, Biology, Honors Biology, Anatomy and Chemistry. Five math classes also offered this year were: Fundamentals of Math, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry and Trigonometry. Math teacher Mrs. Sybil Kingston enjoyed teaching math because, although the students were frustrating sometimes, it's entertaining to see them mature. Her main goal was to motivate students for entry into the math field, or toward a college-bound program. She conducted her classes through lec- tures and notes. Only three credits of math are needed to graduate, the same amount is required for science. Many students, however, are in- terested in these subjects and take more credits than needed, or because they are like Physical Science teacher Coach Quick who says, I just like to blow things up. - ALEX CHRISTIE
