Q :WE Another discussion -junior Whiz Quiz members Dinh Le and jamie McGlothlin join in a discussion over some of the Us Y' material involved in the Whiz Quiz tournaments. I know the answer - Academic Decathlon members Mari Felton and Matt Eggert answer a question called out by the sponsor in preparation for the meet. 'Bit alw- Academic Decathlon and Whiz Quiz teams form C ' 3 Bram unch On Academic Decathlon and Whiz Quiz teams, some of Keller's top students were found working after school on the teams almost daily. The Academic Decathlon contestants competed in math, literature, language arts science, economics and social science. In specifics, the team members were required to study in depth the time period in which World War I took place and had to read Alan Paton's classic novel Cry, the Beloved Country as their literature assignment in the contest. The team members also were required to write essays and par- ticipate in the Super Quiz. The Super Quiz's topic for the year was immigration. The team went to their district competition in late january and came back with many awards. Listen to this - Academic Decathlon members pay attention to what is going on at a meeting after school. The Whiz Quiz team was required to memorize and become familiar with a number of topics. The team participated at a meet where the members were questioned over topics ranging from music and art to math and science. Two place 4th in individuals Students go to state in UIL We can do it! That was drama and debate teacher Taffy Geisel's assessment of the One- Act Play's chances of making it to state in February. Three months later, her prediction became reality. The cast of the One-Act Play I Never Sang For My Father by Robert Anderson and five other students advanced to the University Interscholastic League's 76th Annual State Championships for drama and academic events, May 8 through 10 at the University of Texas at Austin. The One-Act Play cast shared championships with Boswell High School at the district, area and regional levels. Representing District 7AAAA, Keller and Boswell were two of only eight AAAA plays in Texas to qualify for state. The schools performed May 9 at the UT-Austin Performing Arts Center Concert Hall. Senior Barry Yandell won a spot on the State AAAA All-Star Cast for his performance. In addition to Yandell, the cast of I Never Sang For My Father included Kelly Perkins, Scot Lackey, Kristin Blevins, Traci Grissom, Angie Percifield, Andy Criss and Danyah Arafat. Crew members included Iris Perez, Becky Timms and Tammy Cline. Alternates were Kelly Grissom and Carey johnson. Other state UIL competitors included Baronda Wilson, ready writing, Debbie Yaniko, extemporaneous informative speaking, Bryon Sutherland and Mari Felton, team debate, and Bobby Ross, news writing and headline writing. Coached by Mrs. Dorris Worsham, the District 7AAAA and Region ZAAAA readywriting champion, placed fourth in state. The District 7AAAA runner-up and Region ZAAAA champion informative speaker, Yaniko also received a fourth place in state. Winning two rounds and losing one, Sutherland and Felton narrowly missed a spot in the state final four in team debate. The two were District 7AAAA champions and Region ZAAAA runner-ups. Advised by Ms. Janie Crane, Ross tied for seventh place in the state in news writing and headline writing. He was the District 7AAAA and Region ZAAAA runner-up in headline writing. Of the thousands of Texas students that entered UIL Spring Meet Com- petition in April, less than two percent qualified for the state championships in May. - BOBBY ROSS, NAN LEE and LOREE VARDAS.
