Here we are! - The junior and senior Academic Excellence winners smile as they wait to receive their rewards. And the winner is . . . - Superintendent Kermit Heimann and Principal Bill Newton present the juniors their awards for Academic Excellence at a school board meeting. if al Academic recognition Top ten students win awards for excellence Top ten students in each grade level found themselves wearing the first of the KISD's highly publicized letter jackets and wind- breakers for academic excellence after a special school assembly in March. Seniors, juniors and sophomores with the top ten cumulative grade point averages in their respective classes were recognized as the top ten students. For freshmen, students' first semester grades and both semester grades from the eighth grade were averaged to determine the top ten. Top ten juniors and seniors qualified for letter jackets while sophomores and freshmen won letter windbreakers. Each of the awards featured a special insignia representing academic excellence. The students were also honored at a special school board meeting February 13. Assistant Principal Janelle Caldwell accepted a plaque with the students' names inscribed. KISD Vocational Director Linda Martin thought up the idea of the academic awards and later joined with school board president Robert Mackey and KISD director of instruction Dr. Sherry Strain Congratulations! - Superintendent Kermit Heimann congratulates Eddie Donelly on be- ing in the top ten. 146 Letter jacket Ceremony to work out details and get the program approved in the fall. News of the program spread quickly across the area. A Fort Worth Star - Telegram editorial urged other school districts to emulate the program, and radio stations KVIL and KRLD publicized it over the airwaves. Almost everyone familiar with the program supported it as a worthwhile endeavor. junior Adam Beebe, who received a letter jacket, described it as a great program. One of the main accomplishments we fstudentsl are trying to achieve is academics, he said. It's not the only thing, but it should be justly rewarded just as sports should be. Math teacher Alice McConathy echoed Beebe's opinion. It's about time students got awarded for something like academic achievement, she said. junior high and intermediate school students beginning with sixth-graders also qualified for academic awards - BOBBY ROSS x Look at all the people! - The senior top ten look out into the au- dience after receiving the Academic Excellence awards at a school board meeting.
