,wr 2 ig Awake? - These Mu Alpha Theta students seem very tired at this after-school meeting, Two new clubs appear on the horizon Mu Alpha Theta, For those of you who have always wondered what Mu Alpha Theta means, it's just an ingenious way of spelling the word math in Greek. Mu Alpha Theta made its mathematical debut this year as Keller's first and only math club. I joined the club because I enjoy math and wantd to broaden my ideas in the field, freshman Tim Glenn said. Its purpose was to form a keener interest and promote enjoy- ment in mathematics which was accomplished not only through meetings but additional competitions. The forty- membet club participated in competitions at Greenhill, Wylie, JETS make debut South Grand Prairie and UTA. The club members also spon- sored a tournament of their own. Mrs. Carol I-Ijorth also sponsors JETS, a science club. The organization consisted of approximately fifty members and its purpose was to explore the engineering field to see if it's right for us, said senior Barry Ryan. JETS was a newcomer, too, this year. The club met twice a month and went to different schools to hear speakers and engineers, besides taking trips. Letter 'K' honors academic best 93 students recognized The Letter K ceremonies have been a tradition as far back as 1974. This year 95 recipients received awards in all subject areas. The big winners ofthe Letter K ceremony were Brad Benson, a junior and Ann Beebe, a senior. During the May 15 ceremony, Benson came away with four awards in Honors Trigonometry, Computer II, German II and Honors Chemistry I. Beebe also won three awards in Geography, Spanish and Government. Although many awards required students to take tests, some teachers simply decided on the students in their classes whom they felt deserved the award the most. This method wasn't used, however, if there were two or three teachers teaching the same subject. Congratulations! - Student Council member Wendi Lewis presents Marcus Milligan with his award. j l 142 Letter K Ceremony The purpose of the ceremony, according to Student Council sponsor Mrs. Lisa Baker, was, To give the kids that work the most credit for being outstanding in their fields. The Student Council sponsored the ceremony, and members helped hand out awards to the recipients. I was very surprised, surprised but honored, said freshman Jenni Ryan on receiving her Letter K award for Fine Arts. It's important that the kids that work really hard get the ap- preciation and recognition they deserve. It's a nice ceremony and I hope it continues to be a tradition, said Mrs. Baker. - ALEX CHRISTIE
