National Honor Society CNHSJ accomplished several things during the year. The members sponsored College Night and a breakfast to welcome new students. They also promoted a 15-day European tour and organized a peer tutoring program. College Night was mainly for juniors and seniors. Some of the colleges that were represented were Baylor, TCU and Texas ASLM University. Issues covered during the night were scholarships and the cost of colleges. It really helped if you didn't know what college you wanted to attend, said Presi- dent jill Hasty. The sponsors were Kaye Blevins and Beverly Brown. A 15-day European tour was promoted. While in Europe this past summer a group went to Rome, London and saw many sights. Congratulations! - Tomiko Norcross chats with Amy Casey after initiation Proud - janie and jamie Casey come for daughter Amy Casey's initiation. 156 NHS NHS: Around Campus Around the world NHS organized a peer tutoring program which enabled members to tutor students who were required to take tutorials. The main goal of the students, said sponsor Kaye Blevins, is to keep up their grades and get into a good Col- lege. NHS is a service organization for students of the same high academic level to be around one another. Unlike other organizations, members are chosen by grade. Members have to have a 3.5 grade average from their freshmen year to the first six weeks of their junior year. Another requirement is to have an upstanding character. New members were inducted into the National Honor Society during a candlelight ceremony in the commons area on November 25. - JANET PARNELL

Four languages offered Variety is the spice of life Sprechen Sie Deutsch? or L Hablos espanol? or Parlez-vous francais? At least one out of three students is enrolled in a language course and has an answer to one of the above questions. French, Spanish, German and Latin make up the menu of language classes offered. Besides learning the language, both written and oral, students are invited to participate in three langauge clubs. Two of the clubs, Spanish and French, enjoy participating in ac- tivities together. A joint Christmas party and the traditional softball game f picnic were two of these events. Other activities in which French Club members participated were dinner at Bennigan's and private parties at school and in the homes of members. Christi Stroup served as president. Other officers were Vice Presi- dent Cheri Fisher, Secretary Adam Beebe, Treasurer Ronnie Harman and Historian Paige Bradley. Mrs. ,Nancy Fincher and Mrs. Joann Schermerhorn sponsored the club. Other activities participated in by the Spanish Club included collec- ting funds for families of the automobile accident that occurred in March and attending the State Pan American Student Forum Conven- tion in San Antonio. Highlight of the Spanish Club year was preparing the Cinco de Mayo luncheon for faculty and administration. Both clubs sent com- petitors to Austin College in Sherman for the Foreign Language Weekend. Spanish Club president was jack O'Pelt. Other officers were Vice President Barry Ryan, Secretary Kelly Perkins, Treasurer Rhonda Moore and Historian Shana Dilworth. Mrs. Virginia Casey sponsored the club. Mrs. Carmen Rosalez also taught Spanish. A German-Latin Club, sponsored by Dr. Herman Stout, underwent some drastic changes during the year which kept it from participating in many activities, but new officers were chosen in the spring to help the club get off to a good start in the new year. - PEE WEE ENARC 138 Language Clubs How Many? - Spanish Club sponsor Mrs. Virginia Casey tries to decide who should bring what Mexican food dishes to the Cindo de Mayo luncheon. s French Club - First Row: Angela Bogan, Scott Watson, Scott Blanken- ship, David Haynes, Tony Evers, Scott Bernard, Doug Brooks, Adam Beebe, Teri Pennington, Ronnie Harmon.
