i Mullins examines plant roots along A ES- other students. ix Mr. Elgia Easter Horticulture Virginia Polytechnic Institute, B.S. .l The Horticulture Curriculum which is headed by Mr. Elgia Easter, has completed its second year at Kellam. Instruction in this curriculum first takes place in the classroom where students learn the principles of horticulture, and then, in the greenhouse where Nature demonstrates these principles to them through their projects. Projects in the curriculum this year included a bedding plant business, the raising of poinsettas at Christmas. the raising of Easter lillies, the raising of Easter corsages for mothers. An added feature v ,QI 5, QSN, ,r 5 .- it l' f of the curriculum this year was landscape design which is taught to second year students. Through the great facility of the greenhouse. classes have been able to grow and study many unusual plants otherwise unsuitable to this climate such as pineapples which. having been rooted last year. are just now beginning to bear fruit. Other tropical plants which have been raised in the greenhouse include six hibiscus plants and a banana grove consisting of seven trees. .fi Horticulture Prospers In Second Year f 1

Students follow all safety precautions before welding, one of the machine arts of l agriculture. waltne Meat-Packing Plant Toured In pril :Xgriculture is offered at Kellam Linder the instruction of Mr. Garland Nichols and Mr. Herman Valentine. Students in this curriculum learn about such things as the principles of farm management and about such farming techniques as livestock farming. forestry. tractor driving, and the use of electric and gas welding machines. Students also take part in public speaking contests and crop judging. The Agricultural Department at Kellam. besides conducting its regular classes for high school students, also conducts classes for adults and young farmers and classes on educational televi- sion. Un the departments field trip this year to the Gwaltney meat-packing plant. students not only received instruction in judging, but also enioyed a tour of the plant as well. In the spring of the year. the department recognizes individual arhievement in the areas of crops. public S speaking. livestock. tractor driving. and forestry v r v l q A i , I F t

Mr. Hubert Eason and his department teach many different skills which range from the steno block and typing to bookkeeping and general business. i sr' Mr. Edward R. Radke Mr. Robert Stahlin Mr. Hubert T. Eason Distributive Education Distributive Education Clerk-Typist I, Clerical Old Dominion Old Dominion Accounting I University, BA. University, B.S. College of William and Mary, B.S., M. Ed, T4 of speed. The four-channel listening system in one of the typing moms en- ables students to type from different dictations at different rates The block classes instituted last year have proved to be most successful. There are three of these courses currently being taught: stenography, clerical accounting, and clerk-typist. In Typing I the student learns the basic mechanics of typing and machine care. Business Law and Notehand, taught on a semester basis are both interesting and useful. Bookkeeping urges the student to discover the facts for himselfg gener- al business offers a wide range of general knowl- edge on all facets of business. Distributive Education is another important section of the business department. It is headed by Mr. Edward Radke. In Distributive Education, the student has the opportunity to get a credit and get paid for it. To qualify for Distributive Education, a student must be at least sixteen and be either a junior or senior. -. 5. . ,W , J.
