Through the study of history, Mr. Arthur Stewart, Department Chairman, and members of the Social Studies Department teach the student what his forefathers have done-both the mistakes and accomplishments. This year, extensive use of audiovisual materials has been made with movies and pamphlets serving as major sources in the student's learning process. Sociology has been dealt with in greater depth. One of the newest additions to the department is psychology. In the experimental stages, it is being offered to seniors only, and is one of the most ex- citing new courses in the curriculum. Mrs. Mary Osterhous teaches the course introduced at mid- semester. Three government classes under Mrs. Beth Taylor, Mrs. Iesse Iones, and Mrs. Virginia Iames. this year, went to register for the new eighteen year old vote. Viewpoints on American History is one of the multi-media programs used that brings all of the drama and excitement of history into the classroom. Mr. Bill Ralph's eleventh grade United States History classes has used the series called Viewpoints on American Labor which covers the conflict between labor and management at the turn of the century. Through films, records, and eye-witness accounts, the history of the rise of the unions became much more than facts and datesg instead, students learn what it was really like to work twelve hours a day, seven days a week in one of Carnegie's steel millsg why an unemployed immigrant was happy to accept a job as a strike- breakerg and the reasons people hated living in the model town that Pullman built for them. The pro- gram teaches the student, how history was lived.
