I Chorus students take l some time out to sing leisurely around the pi- , ano. 4 i l l i l 9 The major objective of the Chorus Department, lled by Mr. Frank Tatem, is to learn music in all its it phases and to achieve both a sense of 7 accomplishment and pleasure from its study. There are four choruses within the department: :the Mixed Chorus, Concert Chorus, the Girl's Chorus, and Madrigals. The Concert Chorus and Madrigals performed in numerous concerts throughout the year. They .joined other area choirs in singing at Military Circle Mall: had a Christmas Concert at high noon tat the Virginia Beach City Hall, participated in a gChristmas special at Bow Creek Presbyterian l Church: and presented a second annual concert on television, Channel 27. I Several Kellam singers were invited to attend lthe Regional Chorus. These singers included 'Rosalyn Knight, Donna Hahn, Randy Callahan, lloe Allen, Marie McWilliams, and Iackie Lucas. lloe Allen was fortunate enough to be selected for the All-State Chorus. g Chorus is rapidly becoming more and more 'popular at Kellam. Theory class and Music Litera- ture, previously semester choruses, are now full iyear courses. Also, a Music Club was started this year to enable students to further appreciate music. 1 4 l l 59

7 Kellam Dnly School In Cit To Offer String Instruction- Hopes High For Orchestra Kellanrs marching band shows prize-winning form during a half-time perform- EHIC9. 58 Kellam's band, which is under the direction of Mr. Tom Swanson, offers the delights and joys of music to a wide segment of the student body. Steve Skillman. student director, drum major. and section leader of the French horns, served as right- hand man to these students and Mr. Swanson. In order to instruct as many students as possible in their musical endeavors, the band is divided into three divisions according to the abili- ties of the student. The first division. C band. teaches beginning students how to read music and to play their instruments. The next division. B band. is for those students who have learned to read music. but who have not quite mastered their instruments. The last division. A band. is for those students who have reached a point of near perfection in playing their instruments. Besides playing concerts and playing at football games. the band also played this year at the Knotts Island May Day Festival. in the Armed Forces Day Parade. and has been asked to play in May at Forman Field on behalf of a national chari- ty. At the District II Band Festival at Princess Anne High School in March, the band received an excellent rating in grade five compositions and was awarded a plaque. Medals were also awarded to individual band members. Kellam's band is the only one in the city of Virginia Beach to offer instruction in string instruments such as the violin. viola. cello. and string bass. Mr. Swanson hopes that this will lead to the development of an orchestra next year. Captain Mona Lisa Nunez shows pride and form at Homecoming half-time. Through the study of history, Mr. Arthur Stewart, Department Chairman, and members of the Social Studies Department teach the student what his forefathers have done-both the mistakes and accomplishments. This year, extensive use of audiovisual materials has been made with movies and pamphlets serving as major sources in the student's learning process. Sociology has been dealt with in greater depth. One of the newest additions to the department is psychology. In the experimental stages, it is being offered to seniors only, and is one of the most ex- citing new courses in the curriculum. Mrs. Mary Osterhous teaches the course introduced at mid- semester. Three government classes under Mrs. Beth Taylor, Mrs. Iesse Iones, and Mrs. Virginia Iames. this year, went to register for the new eighteen year old vote. Viewpoints on American History is one of the multi-media programs used that brings all of the drama and excitement of history into the classroom. Mr. Bill Ralph's eleventh grade United States History classes has used the series called Viewpoints on American Labor which covers the conflict between labor and management at the turn of the century. Through films, records, and eye-witness accounts, the history of the rise of the unions became much more than facts and datesg instead, students learn what it was really like to work twelve hours a day, seven days a week in one of Carnegie's steel millsg why an unemployed immigrant was happy to accept a job as a strike- breakerg and the reasons people hated living in the model town that Pullman built for them. The pro- gram teaches the student, how history was lived.
