Debbie Danklefs works on a batik project. Old Dominion University, B.S. The Art Department, one of the divisions of the Fine Arts Department at Kellam, strives to de- velop the individual artistic talents of the students: to provide artistic enrichment through a study of art history and field trips, such as the one this year to the Norfolk Art Museum: and classes in Art I, II, and III include instruction in areas like basic design. sketching, pen and ink, clay. water color. batik. tapestry. Sculpture, lineoleum cuts. and silk-screening. Mr. Raymond Dorosz, Department Chairman. and Mrs. Mary Levi relate the basic elements and principles of design through critical thinking and analysis of other subjects and present day events. They stress the understanding of historical and cultural contributions of art in social develop- ment. From this the students are encouraged to apply independent knowledge. creativity and work. During the Christmas season each year. the members of art classes contributed to the decorating of the cafeteria: this year the theme came from Dr. Seuss' work, I-low the Grinch Stole Christmas. Other events such as Evaluation Week, Open House, and the annual art show evidenced the efforts of this group.

7 Kellam Dnly School In Cit To Offer String Instruction- Hopes High For Orchestra Kellanrs marching band shows prize-winning form during a half-time perform- EHIC9. 58 Kellam's band, which is under the direction of Mr. Tom Swanson, offers the delights and joys of music to a wide segment of the student body. Steve Skillman. student director, drum major. and section leader of the French horns, served as right- hand man to these students and Mr. Swanson. In order to instruct as many students as possible in their musical endeavors, the band is divided into three divisions according to the abili- ties of the student. The first division. C band. teaches beginning students how to read music and to play their instruments. The next division. B band. is for those students who have learned to read music. but who have not quite mastered their instruments. The last division. A band. is for those students who have reached a point of near perfection in playing their instruments. Besides playing concerts and playing at football games. the band also played this year at the Knotts Island May Day Festival. in the Armed Forces Day Parade. and has been asked to play in May at Forman Field on behalf of a national chari- ty. At the District II Band Festival at Princess Anne High School in March, the band received an excellent rating in grade five compositions and was awarded a plaque. Medals were also awarded to individual band members. Kellam's band is the only one in the city of Virginia Beach to offer instruction in string instruments such as the violin. viola. cello. and string bass. Mr. Swanson hopes that this will lead to the development of an orchestra next year. Captain Mona Lisa Nunez shows pride and form at Homecoming half-time.
