Students who take a foreign language are given the opportunity to develop an appreciation and understanding of other countries' cultures and peoples. Every year for the past six years. an International Tea has been held. This year there were skits performed, speakers presented, and Spanish art displayed. Participants were Foreign Language and Art students. Over seven hundred persons were in attendance. The Tea was sponsored by Mr. Carl Peterson. head of the Foreign Language Department, and the student chairman was Debbie Danklefs. The American Institute of Foreign Study sponsors a program in which foreign language students have an opportunity to tour several foreign countries during the summer months at a nominal expense. Miss Linda Irons, along with a group of French students, plans to travel to Grenoble, France to study at the University of Grenoble, making stops in London, England: Paris, France: the French Riviera: and Rome, Italy. .5 Mr. Carl E. Debbie Danklefs works on a batik project. Old Dominion University, B.S. The Art Department, one of the divisions of the Fine Arts Department at Kellam, strives to de- velop the individual artistic talents of the students: to provide artistic enrichment through a study of art history and field trips, such as the one this year to the Norfolk Art Museum: and classes in Art I, II, and III include instruction in areas like basic design. sketching, pen and ink, clay. water color. batik. tapestry. Sculpture, lineoleum cuts. and silk-screening. Mr. Raymond Dorosz, Department Chairman. and Mrs. Mary Levi relate the basic elements and principles of design through critical thinking and analysis of other subjects and present day events. They stress the understanding of historical and cultural contributions of art in social develop- ment. From this the students are encouraged to apply independent knowledge. creativity and work. During the Christmas season each year. the members of art classes contributed to the decorating of the cafeteria: this year the theme came from Dr. Seuss' work, I-low the Grinch Stole Christmas. Other events such as Evaluation Week, Open House, and the annual art show evidenced the efforts of this group.
