Heading one of the many departmental meetings, Miss Rountree helps to make vital curricu- lum decisions. Miss Rountree Coordinates Teachers And Curriculum The hidden force behind the coordination of the curriculum at Kellam is the assistant principal, Miss Shirley Rountree. It is she who does every- thing possible to assure a well planned, smooth- operating day at school. This year, with a new seven bell schedule to accomodate the ever increasing number of students attending Floyd E. Kellam, Miss Rountree has done a commendable job. Another challenge that presented itself to Miss Rountree this year was Evaluation Week in December. During that time when visiting educa- tors evaluated all phases of educational life, it was she who saw to the coordination of the schedule the school followed. As a former guidance counselor at Kellam, histo- ry teacher. and a director of religious education for the United States Government in Germany, Miss Rountree has a versatile background to assist her in meeting the constant demands of her present position. .xy i GQ ,' , ., , 'w hl r. f I us, - 40 fx

i rs' ' l Mr. Tepo is just as understanding and jovial inside his office. . . . . as he is out of his office. Tepo Takes An Interest In Student Problems Works For Cooperation The person in charge of keeping order between the students and faculty at Floyd E. Kellam High School is Assistant Principal Mr. George 'I'epo. Ile takes a personal interest in the student's problems, and as is demonstrated in his own words, would like to be able to know each student by name . Uf course, in a school as large as Kellam with a student body of more than two thousand, this is an impossibility. Previous to his assistant principalship, Mr. 'I'epo was a history and government teacher and the 1963 Athletic Director at Kellam. Originally from Tamaqua, Pennsylvania, he played both offensive and defensive end and fullback for his high school football team, and while attending Virginia Polytechnic Institute and Fordham University, he also played the position of end. His football talents were claimed by the Boston Yanks, which are now the Baltimore Colts, with which he displayed his best performance as an end in the 1942 Sugar Bowl.

A Year of Firsts Guidance Department Gives G TB Tests The Guidance Department, headed by Mr. Wade Duke, lr,, strives fora closer working relationship between students, parents, administrators, and counselors. The counselors primary objective is to help the student solve educational, vocational, and personal-social problems while striving to give the students a feeling of confidence in themselves as well as others. Many students find their counselor an inspira- tion in their studies and in preparing them for the classes to be taken in later years. A student, through the advice of his counselor, may make sat- isfactory adjustments in areas that may be causing him difficulty. This year, three new counselors have joined the staff. They are Mrs. Grace Meekins, Mrs. Sandra Mandrick, and Mrs. Frances Runzo. Every year, counselors test all the students through various tests. This year, the Guidance Department teamed up with the State Employment Commission to give the GATB test to non-college bound seniors to determine their employment pos- sibilities. The department also participated forthe first time in the College Clearing House, sponsored by the Virginia Council on Higher Education. Pre- registration was started earlier than usual this year because of class sizes and the new up-coming eight bell schedule. If ..L.,..l Mrs. Marilyn S. Spain Guidance Counselor Hollins College, A.B.
