Cooke Ends Sixth junior Varsity Season, 64-17 Kellanrs junior varsity baseball team got off to a good spring start, but they slacked off in the middle of the season. Still, this year's team enjoyed a winning season under the leadership of Coach Iohn Cooke. Team co-captains were Ken Sullivan and lay Payne. Big hitters for the team were Chuck Sutton, Iohn Sinnen, and Casey Millard. The pitching staff consisted of Ken Sullivan Chris Metcalf and Iiin Perkins. Perkins was a good relief pitcher whose hitting and pitching helped to win the Cranby game, SJ-7. Coach Cooke shifted the line-up every game, and the infielders consisted of Bob Phillips, Iay Payne, Richard Sandstrom, Ken Sullivan, Ken Roebuck. David Wagner, Bryan Jones, Casey Millard, Iohn Lewis, Chuck Sutton, and Gene Bunn. Next year, the junior varsity team should fare better with three returnees. There was only one to return this year, therefore the team lacked experi- ence of having worked and played as a team. 112 l E 35855, -A Infield rearn members are lkneeling, L-Rl David Wagner, Bob Phillips, lay Payne, and Kenny Roebuck. No local meets were held due to the lack of facilities, but the invitational meets that were attended proved to be fruitful. In the Naval Academy Invitational Meet, held at Annapolis. Maryland. Kellam's team placed seventh out of 120 schools. Placing in that meet were Herb Scott, third in shot put: Dennis Castello, seventh in the 1000 yard run: and Roosevelt Iones, third in the high hurdles. Coach Ammons commented on Iones' feat: In this race he was beaten by the high school world record holder, Larry Shipp, at a world record pace. At the D.C. Public Invitational Track Meet, the team came in thirteenth with Iones placing third in the high hurdles and the Sprint Medley team placing fourth. At the State Meet held at VMI in Lexington, the team placed thirteenth with Scott taking fourth in the shot put, Castello placing fourth in the 880 yard run. and Jones placing fifth in the low hurdles. Summing up the Indoor Season, Coach Ammons commented. We broke around twelve school records. The Outdoor Track Team, however, did not fare as well. winning only one of their local meets and placing fairly low in district meets.
