Varsity Baseball Ranks Near Top Of Eastern District Teams The varsity baseball team completed one of its most successful seasons in school history. Under the direction of Coach Tom McCauley, the team finished near the top of the Eastern District. Tri-captains, Rick Futrell, Steve Currin, and Fred Evans contributed fine hitting and pitching to the team. Tommy Currin handled the duties of catcher, and his hitting saved some important games for the Knights. Dave Marquette, Mike Delulio, Steve Layden, and Clyde Iones played a tight infield with few balls getting by them. Mike Pelkey and Eddie Sellers were good outfielders who also could play other positions as well. Soph- omore Bill Lanning proved to be a good relief pitcher who should be a leader in future years. Surprise of the year was Gary Ansell, a transfer student and in his first year of playing Kellam baseball, paved the way for many victories with his pitching and hitting. Prospects for next year look good with the return of many of the same players. Hopefully the Knights will win the Eastern District title in base- ball next year. n Coach Tom McCauley and tri-captains Steve Currin, Freddie Evans and Rick Futrell led the varsity baseball team. 206
