Presenting The ’65 PANTHER For our theme in the 1965 Panther, we, the Senior Class, chose the torch, symbol of life and learning. In September of 1961, we assumed the responsibility of cherishing and maintaining its ideals from the graduating class of the previous June. We then began our ca- reers as freshmen in Keeseville Central School. For four years we set our objectives high. Whether our challenges were academic, extra- curricular, or social, we strove to be the best class ever. While working together, we formed many friendships, learned many skills, and established many goals for other classes to attain. In a sense, this yearbook is a testimony to the goals we have attained and the activities we have enjoyed. We hope it tells our story well, and with its publication we happily, but reluctantly pass our torch to the undergraduates. Please hold it high and keep it burning bright- ly 1 Dedication It is with great honor and deep appreciation that we dedicate this '65 Panther to you, Mrs. Clute. Throughout our high school years you have been present to help us, not only as a teacher, but also more importantly, as a friend. When it was doubtful whether we would have a yearbook this year, you willingly assumed the task of adviser. This dedication can only be a small token of our esteem and gratitude. In Memoriam In Memoriam to DR. EVANS We, the Class of 1965, wish to honor the memory of Dr. John Evans who, as school physician, did so much for us. We therefore offer this page as our tribute to his years of faithful service to both our school and community. Yearbook Staff Yearbook Staff Chairmen: (L to R) S. Vassar, J. Anderson, M. Sports An active sports program is one of the most important phases of high school life. Through athletics an individual is able to develop both physically and mentally. Keeseville offers a wide variety of fields for athletic participation. FOOTBALL - The Varsity football squad went through a season of rebuilding. The outlook for 1965 will be considerably brighter since most of this year's starters will be returning, and the experience they have acquired will be invaluable. Additional strength will be derived from this year's J. V. squad. BASKETBALL - The Varsity and Junior Varsity basketball teams found themselves in one of the strong- est leagues in the Champlain Valley area in quite some time. Both squads were hampered by a lack of experience as they tried desperately to improve the losing record of the previous year. The services of seniors, Fran Barcomb, Norm Baker, Larry Conley, and John Garcia will be greatly missed in the com- ing year. However, hopes will be high with nine juniors returning on the Varsity squad and 11 Sopho- mores eligible to move up from theJ.V. team. WRESTLING - The 1964-65 wrestling season started off with a group of boys that were large in num- ber and strong in the knowledge of wrestling skills. Interest was strong, and hopes were high for a very successful season. After that, much was lost as some of the boys had to be dropped from the team. At this point a squad of forty dwindled to twenty-five and the hopes of a successful season were gone. Only one match was won for the remainder of the season. However, Roger Douglas succeeded in capturing the intersectional and sectional titles in the 95 pound weight class. The school is proud of Roger's record. TRACK - The Keeseville Central School Track team celebrated its third birthday this year. About 46 boys turned out to run, jump, or throw for the Panthers. Great improvement has been shown since track was born in Keeseville and this year the boys scored more points and brought home more ribbons than ever before. The team participated in the Sectionals and six boys qualified for the Intersection- als. Four of these six boys scored points to help our Section 10 for the first time in history. The 2nd Annual Keeseville Invitational Track Meet was held and seven teams were in attendance. It is hoped that this track meet will become one of the important meets of the area. Several members of the track team extended their running into the summer by entering the Platts- burgh J-C Track Meet. Jan Vercoe won his event at Plattsburgh and went on to win in the New York State Championship with several other area boys. These same boys flew to St. Paul, Minn., to com- pete in the National J-C Championships. fUNCOMMON VALOR. If you ’re going to win tonight . . . 4 Activities Keeseville Central has numerous activities in which students may participate. They serve many purposes and involve a wide variety of interests. All one has to do is join them to be a part of an en- joyable phase of high school life. STUDENT COUNCIL - This year the Student Council of K.C.S. is composed of 35 students from grades 7 through 12. In the fall, the Student Council sponsored our annual bonfire and football rally in order to get the football season into full swing. This year its main activity has been the writing of its constitution. Its main money-making project was the sponsoring of the school pictures. The spon- sorship of Student's Day and the Sportsman’s Banquet will round out the Council’s activities for the year. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY - This is based on the four standards of Scholarship, Leadership, Char- acter, and Service. This year the Honor Society consists of 41 members. It had two inductions, a talent show, a picnic, and a Campus Day at Plattsburgh State. MUSIC - Keeseville has two important fields of music in which students participate: the Chorus under the direction of Mr. Richard Molholsky consists this year of 75 members and the A Capella Choir has 45 members. The Senior Band for high school students consists of 40 members. The Junior Band consists of 30, made up of students from the 7th and 8th grades. Both are directed by Mr. Richard Santor. SKI CLUB - This year there were some 70 eager, but frustrated students in the Ski Club as poor weather conditions prevented weekly expeditions to Whiteface Mountain and Paleface ski centers. One trip was taken to Whiteface, however, so the Club's existence was not in vain. Let's hope the weather conditions will improve next year so that the K.C.S. ski program can continue. GIRLS' SPORTS CLUB - The Girls' Sports Club has been very active in intramurals, play days and selling of refreshments at the football and basketball games. They are a cooperative group of girls with lots of enthusiasm and a good sense of fair play. PEP CLUB - There were more than 60 eager and noisy rooters for the games - particularly basket- ball. The group sold Pep Club buttons for a money-raising project. One very successful dance was held in the fall after a football game. In the spring, a trip or outing will be taken as a reward for those who were regularly active in this important method for showing and maintaining school spirit. The Keeseville Chapter of the National Honor Society was founded in 1958 on the four basic principles of leadership, scholarship, character, and service. Throughout its seven years of existence, 115 candidates who have demonstrated these qualities have been inducted. These qualities are represented by a torch. This is not only symbolic of the National Honor Society, but it also represents the torch we, as mem- bers, have carried throughout our four years of high school. Senior Band (L to R) 1 - L.
