HIS year the motto, Enter to learn-go forth to serve , has been brought nearer to us than ever before. A glance into the 1934 yearbook should serve to make this everpresent in the minds of Keene Normal students, both here and after gradua- tion. Have you ever thought just what the motto means? Perhaps it has been said so many times with- out thought that it has become trite and stereotyped. It means exactly what it says-- enter to learn -not to waste time, to join every club possible or to be in every type of athletic activity, but to learn. lt does not mean trying to bluff your way through classes although most of us try that wornout trick at one time or another. It means that if you wish to become successful in your chosen profession and to be of serv- ice to your pupils and community, you must be de- termined to learn and be truly anxious to go forth to serve . We will encounter new situations-many of them difficult to surmount, but, with the help of this motto and our high ideals of responsibility, we will be able to hold high the banners of Keene Normal, and make our school proud of us. In all our work let us remember that To every man there openeth a way and ways and a way And the high soul climbs the high way And the low soul gropes the low And in between, on the misty flats The rest drift to and fro. But to every man there openeth a high way and a low And every man decideth the way his soul shall go. limit fi - To-E M L-jr 'TS' Q is -Lo-1 M I nl llillllmfllllmlmuiiilllln. fi! - 'Ill-L I' --A- -iflw ilnfl 'all 3- - -illmll --- , 'H n .51 9 1 21. .. fiiiila.. Our individual success depends upon the extent of absorption of our training and our abrlity to use it in actual practice. I know we are eager to attack this new experience but--along with our eager- ness-there is a trace of fear and wonder as to the outcome. It is with reluc- tance that we think of leaving this campus, the friendships formed here, and the teachers who have patiently guided us through our school life. In spite of this feeling of reluctance in leaving. we realize also our debt to our Alma Mater which can only be repaid by making ourselves successful in our chosen pro- fession-for the school is reflected in each one of us, and our success means its success. Undergraduates, your future depends upon the thoroughness of your prep- aration. Prepare now seriously for the battle of life ahead. Let not an oppor- tunity pass, through which might be gained information or knowledge per- taining to facts which will be of importance in your next stage of life. Profit by the mistakes of others. By these few words, I do not intend to give the impression that I think your school life should be all work and no play. En- joyment should be an essential factor in your field of preparation which is the foundation of your future life. T'is time to say au revoir, dear friend, And may our friendships never end. To classmates I have only this to say- I hope that we shall meet again some day. Undergraduates, my plea to you To carry on when we are through. -George C. Mens' Sport Summary 1933-1934 Last fall for the second consecutive season. the recreational program, con- sisting of intramural sports, started off with a bang . Speed-ball was en- joyed by three teams representing the three classes. A fair sized group of the school's men enjoyed the sport of horseback riding. which was introduced early in the fall. Many played tennis. while numerous others participated in bad- minton, cross-country, golf, hiking and swimming. During the winter months basketball was the chief interest. The varsity team, captained by Harold Wlieelock of Keene. won six and lost five games. The opponents were other teacher training Maine. Massachusetts and Vermont. The their record. For the spring season, varsity baseball continued for two years. The experiment was but a short schedule. An interesting tennis schedule was played. while track and bowling were enjoyed by other students. The season on the whole was a success. especially from the standpoint of student participation and preparation for leadership of health and recreational programs in the schools of the state. institutions in New Hampshire. players deserve much credit for was again tried. after being dis- proved successful although there limit 90 I f A1 W W x ,fx I g , D, me to .W ' Qi ' ' Q9 L if , fin ..inlll... Women's Athletics -The Women's Athletic Association of K. N. S. has taken a step forward this past school year. Under this organization the girls are required to par- ticipate in at least one sport for a minimum of one hour a week. There are about twenty-four sports from which the students can choose. Some of these sports are: Archery, badminton, baseball, basketball, bowling, dancing, golf. hockey, horseback riding, rowing, shuffleboard, winter sports, swimming, life- saving, tennis, track and tumbling. Awards are won on a point system-credit being given for an active part in all sports. At the end of each seasonal sport. awards are presented. These are in the form of numeral monograms and let- ters. The highest award, a blazer, is presented once a year at the Spring Picnic or Banquet. Membership is open to all women of K. N. S. who have won one hundred points and have a scholastic average of 80 percent. The slogan is: A sport for every girl and every girl in a sport. In the basketball tournament for the divisions, the 31-I-HJ's were victor- ious. The Seniors defeated the Sophomores and Freshmen for honors in the class games. The Red and White game, the big intramural game of the season was won by the Reds. The varsity basketball squad gives its appreciation to Miss Marjory Bate- man, coach, whose untiring efforts resulted in such a successful season. K. N. S. was very fortunate in securing Miss Lilian Jaeger of the Bouve School of Physical Education to ill the position of the assistant physical edu- cation director for women. She has shown a great interest in the activities of the school and the girls have shown their appreciation by their cooperation. Pace 92 . :Q i zl gfhgi EX .' Delegate-:'s Report My trip to New York to attend the Annual Spring Conference of the Eastern-States Association of Professional Schools for Teachers was made pos- sible by the faculty and student body. I can in no way adequately show my appreciation for this opportunity which was given me. My only regret is that it was impossible for more from Keene to attend this conference. for I believe great benefits can be derived from such contact not only with the faculties but also with the students of the different schools which have so much in common. I shall try, briefly, to give you my general impressions of the meetings. The first meeting which I attended was held in the Hotel Pennsylvania on Thursday evening. April 12. The topic for discussion was: The Extent and Nature of the Oversupply of Teachers in the Eastern States. On the whole. I believe that the majority of speakers felt from their research that the over- supply of real teachers was slight. From this they inferred that if students thoroughly train themselves, through the opportunities given them, to teach in the public and private schools of today, they should have little difficulty in obtaining positions. This seemed to be quite a cheerful outlook for the future if we would only heed their advice. Student and faculty meetings were held concurrently. The student meet- ings were conducted by student chairmen and all proved to be very interesting. They were carried on as general discussions, contributions being made by stud- ents representing the different schools. The general topic was: The Teacher and His Relation to the Community. In the Friday morning business meeting the delegates formed a plan by which the conferences for next year can be made much more vital to more schools and its results can be carried on throughout the following years. It was suggested and adopted that the official delegate for the year l935 should be Chosen by May 15, 1934 and his name be sent to Dr. Suhrie, first vice-presi- dent ex-officio of the association. When all the schools represented fulfill this requirement a list of all the official delegates will be compiled and sent to the different institutions. This list will make it possible for the schools to cor- respond with each other through the delegates, to exchange their problems and receive aid in solving themu lt also was suggested that next year the official delegates should have a discussion meeting alone where they would be able to discuss the problems vital to their own schools. Not only were the formal meetings of great benefit to all those who attended but the informal social contacts made by the students of the different schools proved to be benehcial. leading to a comparison of the schools and their problems. Besides the meetings there was a banquet which I had the privilege to attend. Those attending this affair next year will see our own Daddy Mason sitting at the head table for he was elected vice-president of the Asso- ciation-a great honor. The dance following the banquet was a delightful affair, giving further opportunity for the students to become acquainted. After the conference ended we had the opportunity to amuse ourselves for the afternoon and evening. ' , -Louise Tewksbury, 35, Littleton. N. H. I -JE' lhxriia U5 IEEE 3131 1934 150 is G . AN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT EEORE bringing our 1934 yearbook to a close, it is fitting that we offer our thanks to those who have helped to make the publication a success. To the Granite State Studio, the Cheshire Engraving Company, the Sentinel Printing Company, and to all those students who have contributed in any way, we wish to show our sincerest appreciation: without their aid and willing cooperation the 1934 yearbook could not'be what it is. Although, as we have mentioned, the Kronicle is not the product of any one person's effort, neverthe- less we feel that the work of Mr. Preston deserves spe- cial recognition. Only through his carrying on, his keeping the threads of organization unbroken while members of the staff were practice teaching, is this book possible. -Edward L.
