The knowledge we acquire is not only gained from the subjects we are taught in the classroom but also from our extracurricular ac- tivities. The 1963 SALMAGUNDI stresses the im- portance of these phases of learning. The key of knowledge unlocks the most important thing of all-the door to the future. The door on the end sheets represents the door to the future. At the beginning of our high school career it is closed. After four years have elapsed, we gain possession of the key to open this door. We must remember that beyond this door there are many more doors in life which will have to be opened. Although our key will help to open them, we will need many more. These keys can only be found through searching, working hard, and continuing to learn. ig. ,S Q. It is with the greatest pleasure that we dedicate the 1963 SALMAGUNDI to a person who has given fourteen years of outstanding service to Keene High School. As head of the Social Studies Department, you have imparted knowledge which will make us better citizens with an understanding of the ideals of democracy. You have exerted a profound influence upon our future by guiding us toward our life work. As we look back upon our years at Keene High School, we will always remember the light in your room even though the corridors were dark. No problem was too small or too great for your attention. You have always given unselfishly of your time. It is with the utmost appreciation that we dedicate this Yearbook to you, Miss Mabel F. Plante. Dedication MABEL F. DAY One of the reasons Keene High School has achieved its high standards is that it has had fine administrative guidance under Superintendent of Schools John W. Day. Here at Keene we specialize in progressive education: our science and language labs and fine courses prove this point. It is all made possible through the interest and leadership of a fine and experienced educator. We are all grateful to Mr. Day and the school board for the fine job they have done in providing new and interesting op- portunities for those who seek knowledge in this challenging age. Help Us in 0 Many Ways, MR. ALFRED LANIBERT Mr. Alfred Lambert is Keene's very capable assistant super- intendent of schools. He has held this particular position for the past two years, preceding which he served for several years as principal of Keene Junior High School. Before that he was an excellent eighth grade science teacher at the Junior High. Having worked with students in these various ways for many years, he has become very much aware of their wants and needs. Mr. Lambert has been, and certainly will continue to be, an exceptionally fine assistant superintendent who has initiated programs to provide Keene students with the best possible education. MARGARET GOODELL Secretary We Will Remember And Revere 1 MRS. ALICE FURLONE Secretary MR. HAROLD DREW As principal of Keene High Mr. Drew has made everyone feel that each and every student is truly an important part of the school and that the school is an important part of him. He's never, too busy to talk with us about whatever may be on our minds. He may be found discussing the Cuban crisis with students in the lunchroom or chatting fluently in French with pupils in the language lab. Mr. Drew has been at K.H.S. for many years. He has watched the school grow athletically, culturally, and scholastic- ally and has put a bit of himself into each of these areas. He has become part of the soul of Keene High School. More And More Each Passing Year. MR. CHARLES BURNS This has been Mr. Burns, second year as assistant principal. It is clear to all that he has done a fine job with disciplinary matters at K.H.S.' The success of any organization depends partly on the enforcement of its rules. Mr. Burns is one of the persons whom everybody at school knows. He is interested in the well-being of each individual as well as that of the school. He is Working for a school and a student body that everyone can be proud of. We are glad he has chosen Keene High as 'ghis schoolf, MRS. BEVERLY LaMOTHE Secretary Teachings of Science, History, and Math MARGARET D. Primarily comes the nostalgia of the intimate friendships which we have formed and of the school, faculty, and administration with which we have become so closely connected during our four fleeting years at Keene High. Also, confronting us upon our graduation is the world, the world into which we are about to enter. For most of us, I am sure that is a startling, perhaps frightening thought. However, I feel Certain that you who have now completed your stay at Keene High have profited by the splendid preparation which was offered you here. There- fore, with that knowledge as a foundation, I believe that if each of you will apply yourself to the utmost, our class of 763 will be second to none in its accomplishments of the future. I extend my best wishes for a happy, profitable future to you all. Q is 1 QL 5 I sg: 5 R 'asf- , f 5 EZ i Q. X M -- ,JJ V we QM 4' f , .wwf Amr? Sullivan St. Paulls Advanced Studies Program gives above-average students a chalice to go one step beyond high school learning. Advanced courses are offered in science, math. history, and languagesgg the student must choose a course which is not offered at his own high school. The students gain more knowledge in a chosen subject or field and oftentimes advanced placement in college is a direct result. However, the real value of the program is in learning how to study, how to get along with others, and how to make the most of a wonderful opportunity. .1 ,fi 1 if x f Xxx xy l ff X , , gl 'I g M D, .XX I A r' I, U L5 .xx .ln L - L , , R i.. I20 BOYS' STATE Each year a certain number of boys from the Junior class ,are chosen to represent Keene High School at the New Hampshire Boys, State program which is held on the campus of the University of New Hampshire in Durham. Boys, State affords students the opportunity to become better acquainted with town, city, and state government, thus developing leadership, character development, and citizenship. Athletic programs, party elections, and lectures all go hand in hand to make Boys, State a memorable experience for those attending. Last fall memhers of both Girls, and Boys, State participated in the annual American Legion Auxil- iary program. At this time the group related their experiences to an audience of Auxiliary members, sponsors, and friends. and the Many Rewards Are .lustl Earned. Seated: R. Nichols, M. J. Henderson, J. Kerr, E. GIRLS' STATE Delegates to Granite Girls' State are sent from the high schools in the state to form their own model government through the state level. This consists of a governor, senators, mayor, councilman, and various town offices. Girls, State affords a wonderful opportunity to learn about our government through participation. Girls from Keene who held elected offices were Judy Kerr, Town Clerk, and Barbara Paire and Donna Bemis, members of the Platform Committee of the Nationalist Party. Emily Lacey was elected this yearis governor and was one of the two delegates from New Hampshire to attend Girls, Nation in Washington, D.C., where she participated in government through the National level, a great honor for any girl. Selection to Girls, State and Girls' Nation is a goal to which Keene High girls have aspired in the past and will continue 'to strive for in the future. M. J. Gorges, M. J. Henderson. Competition with students of other schools provides an incentive to those who are interested in improving themselves in the art of speaking in public. The club has been represented in eight interscholastic speech activities so far this school year. One debate team composed of jane Bennett, Anne lJeVaudreuil, Susan Hunt, and Robert Sheinfeld won a 'rotating trophy at a tournament sponsored by Laconia High School. COACHES Mr. Hanley, Mr. DiCuilio VARSITY FOOTBALL This year the football squad ended the season with eight losses and one win. The team had only three seniors. There were, however, many sophomores on the team with no previous varsity experience. These younger football players gained valuable training and experience in the games they played. Most of the teams played were stronger, more experienced, and had greater depth in substitute players. Beating Concord in a 20-6 battle was the only bright spot of the season. They look forward to a better season next year. V-I -C - T-O-R-Y ! Good Sportsmanship Award in K.H.S.-M.R.H.S. football Shafby Tf0PhYsJ- Vitale, MF- DFCW- ganna. D. Lane, F. Underwood. -wa. D.
