Monadnoc , which has over us throughout our formative years. It stands as a symbol of our upward climb jn life and the,goal which looms ever alzlove us. ,Jhe freshman is iust beginning the climb. The sophomore has been advancing and now stands farth'erLalong the path. The iunior, having passed the halfway point, is now lust behind the senior, who has reached they shoulder of the mountain. The peak is in view but still above him as he looks upward towards the adult years of life. It must be pointed out that members of this team are also on the varsity squad. ln a pre-season scrimmage, the J.V.'s defeated the Towle High Varsity, T2-6. In the first regular game they whitewashed Bellows Falls, Vermont, J.V. 13-O. In the final game of the season, played against Greenfield, Massachusetts, Dick Vogel made a spectacular 92-yard touchdown run with the second half kick-off. In spite of this, Keene lost QO-8. I2 State i' 39 39 ssc: 'fri' VARSITY FIRST ROW C Bergeron P Fletcher H Lane SECOND ROW W Peart B Nicholls D Stone CROSS COUNTRY The Keene High Cross Country team ran very effectively this year under the tutelage ot Coach Mayes The team s determination balance and running talent provided an undefeated season in dual contests As a climax to the year the harriers easily copped the state title by a score of 42 69 At this meet Pete Fletcher finished first making him the only runner to win the state title tor three consecutive years Whit Peart placed fifth Brian Nicholls seventh and Don Stone tenth to furnish the needed margin for victory At the New England meet held a week later at Providence Rhode Island they proved their mettle as they placed second in ths race Pete placed third only tive yards behind the winner Pete in his third undefeated season paced the team throughout the tall coming in first in all nine regular season meets and stretching his victory string to twenty-one. He smashed hi own state record ot H129 which has been in the Fletcher tamily for tive years by 28 seconds. He also set records at Concord. Keene inaugurated a new course this year and Pete set new records here several times during the season. The Keene High Team loses tour top runners by graduation: Pete Fletcher Brain Nicholls Whit Peart and Don Stone.
