We, too, are a part of a great corporation of education. Of course our school is run on a much smaller scale, but it is similar to that of any large concern. It is divided into small boards which when united may be re- ferred to as the Executive Suite. As the small departments we have our home rooms, each represented by two individuals. These individuals-Bruce Amadon, Shirley Blood, Mark Waltz, Julia Huntley, Virginia Chase, Brian Coates, Carlton Russell, Sheila Fleming, George Echard, Ciona Martel, and Stuart Osborn-help in solving our problems. With the department heads we have the executive boards of each class. We iuniors have for our officers the leaders whose pictures are on the opposite page. To Represent the Executive Suite we have our Student Council. This board governs tto an extenti the activities of the entire body. We are proud to have Polly Philbriclc, Jane Gonyou, and Stuart Osborn from our class. Although this is but a glimpse into our government we realize that our experience in our own councils will guide us to better iudgement in our future years. -4 P . .3 644' 4' F ,, wg ' ,sv L - . 'rl A time mfs .ze . . , Sahnagundi Each year's Salmagundi staff has one rnain obiective, to give the school a bigger and better yearbook. The i955 staff faced an entirely different problem. Last year's staff produced so fine a book that it was awarded a First Place Rating by the Columbia Scholastic Press at their annual yearbook critique in New York City. Qur task was to try to present a finer publication, Whether we have accomplished this is still to be determined. We have tried to give you our best, in art, photography, and editorial coverage to cherish and remind you of your year at K.H.S. ln addition to the officers listed onthe copyright page, the follow- ing are members of the staff: Joyce Moore, Betty Harris, Wilma Cross, Donna Castner, Kenneth Ball, Marion Dennison, Peggy Mott, Natalie Field, Barbara Martineau, June Safford, Pot Wadsworth, Dorothy Beliveau, Carole Cameron, Nancy Hildreth, Margaret Lindsey, Kenneth Coolidge, Donna Wiiber, Robert Sullivan, Sondra Perron, Roger Le- Tourneau, Tom Van Arsdale, Julia Karsis, Polly Philbrick, Don Mackey, and Patricia Sarsfield. 61 The Informer To the casual observer the Informer might be iust another school newspaper, but here at K. H. S. we consider it equivalent to the Times. Issued six times a year, the Informer is hlled with special scoops on school activities. Featuring Personalities of the Month , a poll on a timely topic, a comic strip, and excellent editorial coverage, it is no wonder that each issue is ovidly anticipated. The staff itself gains valuable experience by practic- ing the various techniques in newspaper coverage. Their industrious reporters always adhere to the lnformer's motto By, For, and About the Students. The technical aspects of the printed word are learned also, for the entire stafT works in close con- nection with the commercial department, which does all the typing and mimeographing. Through their hard work, the students receive an up-to-date chronicle of school affairs and future events. What is more important, the Informer is the voice of public opinion which sets student standards even more effectively than disciplinary action. Seated. S. Osborn, V. Chase, S. Marsh. Standing: M. What better way to un- derstand and appreciate the basic factors by which we will govern ourselves than through our own model of representative democracy, the student advisory council. Elected by the student body each year, its mem- bers act as a mediation board between student and teacher, dealing with problems of school life and serving in official capacity as representatives of the student body. This years' council has worked closely with city and school officials in an effort to provide activities and service to the students. With the co- operation of the Recreation Department, the annual Hag and Stag Drag was again offered as entertain- ment at Halloween, Successful drives for the Red Feather Services and the March of Dimes were main proiects. National Safe Driving day was emphasized at K.H.S. and through the generosity of the Keene Lions Club almost 4,000 book covers were distribut- in the school. The Council has always realized the importance of high scholarship. Annually they contribute a sum of money to be used to purchase pins for the newly elected members of the National Honor Society. By serving the needs and interests of the stu- dents, school, and community, the council members learn to be better citizens and realize that good government can survive only by the active participa- tion of every individual. Perhaps one of the most unique events of the year was the N. F. L. Congress here in October sponsored by the Keene club. This was a mock legislative assem- bly in which various groups from all over New England participated by carrying out various func- tions of the government. Our debaters are well seasoned travelers for their activities lead them to Boston, U. N. H., Dartmouth and even Shrewsbury, Mass. There they enter either discussion tournaments or actual debates. Right in step is the Band Council composed of Chairman John Eaton, Carlton Russell, Gayle Ford, Robert Calef, Carole Cameron, Dan Kinney, Tony Redington, Jason Bridge, and Wayne Miskelly. The main project of this group was formulating plans to tlnance a proposed trip to Philadelphia. A very big item on the year's activities was the New England Festival Auditions held here in Keene. Shirley Howard was chosen to play at a special concert. John Eaton, Robert Calef, and Tony Reding- ton also were auditioned. Several musicians auditioned for the All State Band which will gather at Claremont this year. As both the New England and All State bands are composed of students from a large area the selection of Keene band members is an honor. To raise funds for the band trip a Band Jamboree was held in October. Reversing last yeafs policy the Keene band as guests of the Rutland band gave a combined concert in Rutland. They also traveled to Springfield, Vermont, in the spring for a combined concert. To round out the year some thrilling and moving compositions were heard at the annual Spring Band Concert. Under the able leadership of Mr. Cook the band has taken great strides in presenting an even finer quality of music. Any student of biology or anyone who has taken the course is eligible for membership in the Biology Club which devotes itself to furthering scientific knowledge. This year's club spent a very successful school year. They spent the fall months on field trips gathering specimens for classroom aquaria and terraria and studying microscope cultures. During the winter the club concentrated on laboratory work of which the main project was in- tense experimentation on osmosis. A visit to a maple sugar orchard and the actual tapping of the trees by the members marked the beginning of spring. A special trip to a florists rounded out the year's activ- ities. As an added treat the entire club traveled to Boston to visit the new Science Museum, thus ending an eventful school year. Physics Miss Drugg, J. Watt, J. MacAllister, C. Yon, R. Packard, A. No matter what time of the school day it is, there are always at least two members performing their duties. They are doing their job when they broadcast special notices to you, when they are operating movie projectors, or just remaining on call to take care of whatever needs to be done. Boys with a C average or above are eligible for membership. They are well trained in the operating of the various electronic devices necessary to the functioning of the club. For the first time, senior members have received their pins at the beginning of the school year instead of at the awards assembly in June. The reason for this is to give the members a chance to wear the pin intschool and to show that they are in good standing with the club. The club has no officers and never holds meetings. It is under the able direction of Miss Cooke, who has really done a magnificent iob in guiding it. Based on length of service and ability, two or three are Row la G, Arseneault, W. Wright, D. Werme. In this third meet of the season, the team was victorious over Bishop Bradley, Athol, Gardner, and Bellows Falls. Keene won this meet with a total of 52 points which was lO points higher than the second place team. In the next meet, the Kiwanis, warmup for the State meet, Keene placed third behind the Sachems from Laconia and the Concord team This was followed by the Keene Teachers College Rotary invitational meet here in Keene Teams competed from Laconia Concord Portsmouth, Nashua, and Stevens. Laconia again won this meet and Keene placed fourth. The final meet of the season was the state meet at Exeter where Keene placed sixth in a field of eight teams and lost the trophy she had won the year before. ln order to keep the trophy a team must win the championship three consecutive years. Golf Club With all the veterans returning except one, the prospects for the season are very high. The under- classmen are represented by Jim Trafton, who is a sophomore, and Henry Descoteau and Bonn Simons who are juniors. The senior class has a Hne pair of golfers in Al Schretter and Don Coburn, these boys paced the team last year, and are hoping that they will again this year. They will represent the school at the state meet. Last year's record was a fair one with the team winning three and losing Eve. There were two wins over Gardner and one over Manchester Central, The boys lost to Nashua twice, Mount Herman twice, and Manchester Central once. Left to right: D. Coburn, Mr. Burrill, A. The team was composed of iuniors and seniors. Juniors are: Edna Hopkins, Ruth Harris, Gail Dollar, Sophie Dyshlevich, Senior are: Emily Leclair, Carol Sweeny, Betty Harris, Marlene Miller, Eva Bemis, Marion Dennison and Kay Britton. Although the season was not an undefeated one, the girls deserve praise for their work. Always faith- ful, they fought to the end, playing games with no Varsity Field Hockey one there to watch. With seven of the girls graduating Coach Mc- Caughey is hoping for a lot from the promising J-V's. The Varsity and J-V teams are coached by Miss McCaughey and Miss Drugg respectively. This seemed to be the cry that echoed from the gym this season as the girls came through with 6 wins and 2 losses. lt is not saying too much when one repeats that if sickness hadn't taken a hand this year's team would have been undefeated. At the Greenfield gym K.H.S. was out to win, but with the absence of Carole Lower the lassies iust couldn't squeeze in enough baskets. They lost by only 7 points. Then after beating Shelburne Falls at home, the girls traveled down there to play without two first-string forwards and one guard. At this game two ofthe regular guards, Gail Dollar and Pat Camp- bell, had to change to forward for part of the game. Despite the obstacles the game was a good one and it was lost by only 7 points. The J-V's, composed of all sophomores, improv- ed a great deal as the season progressed. Big things are expected of them next year. In their new black uniforms the girls made a fine showing with new and peppy cheers at the foot- ball and basketball games, Miss Pechulis was the new coach and Sandy Davis and Pat Campbell were Co-Captains. ln March the cheerleaders were honored to participate in a cheerleading competition at Fitch- burg High School, Besides the ton there is work that has to be done. It is the duty of these girls to make up new cheers and motions, Usher at home games, take charge of after-game parades, and plan and cheer at pep rallies, Twirlers and Color Guards For the tirst time in the high school band the maiorettes donned short, perky skirts ot orange and black to match their orange and black iackets. They also added a pair of white polished boots to their new outfit and topped it oft with a tall hat covered with a large white plume. They certainly created a very pretty picture as they marched down the football held swinging and tossing their batons to the peppy music of the band. They were includ- ed in the band tormations and also had a special routine of their own. During games they took turns directing the band with drum maiorette Pat Sarsfield and then they twirled in tront ot the grand stand. This year the twirlers were all seniors: Joan Kneeling: P, Sarstield. Band Story, Vvinne Sherwin, Jane lvlaslen and Barbara Kelly, head tvvirler, Another group that played an important and a colorful part in the band is composed ot the color guards: Elaine Reardon, Arlene lviartineau, Carole Cameron and Donna Wilber. They too, were out- fitted in new white iackets and trousers trimmed witr orange and black. They wore tall hats with black plumes similar to those worn by the twirlers. White gloves added neatness and sparkle to their outfit. During the month of March they started prac- ticing and devising routines for the spring concert. These girls have worked very hard in preparing the girls who will take their places next year. Standing: B. Kelly, J. Maslen, C. Cameron, E, Reardon, D, lNilbur, J. Story, W, Sherwin X x, D F 1 . V.
