1983 TAHAWUS Keene Central School Keene Valley, New York 12943 (518) 576-4555 Dedication the beginning and the end . . . It is with pride, gratitude and love that we, the Class of 1983, dedicate our yearbook to Mrs. Constance Cross, the kindergarten teacher at Keene Central School. We are proud to graduate from a school with a faculty whose keystone is a teacher of the caliber of Mrs. Cross. We will always be grateful to her for the fine foundation she gave us, both academically and so- cially. We love her for the love and encouragement she has given each and every one of us throughout our years at Keene Central. Graduation is both a beginning and an end. For us, Mrs. Cross was our beginning. She will always be the living end. 2 CLASS OF I98S Class Colors: Aquamarine and Orange Class Flower: The Rose Class Song: Eye of the Tiger by Survivor JULIE ANN BAIRD JB Jules Oolie Shortie Ambition: To go for it and to get it! Mr. and Mrs. Alan Macnab were the advisors for the Class of '83. For many of us it was our first trip in a plane, but fortunately, no one got sick. While we were in Orlando, we stayed at the Orlando Vacation Resort, which was a bit of a disap- pointment, mainly because it was so far out of the way. During our first full day there, we visited Sea World in the morning and Disney World in the evening. At Sea World, we saw Shamu the Killer Whale perform, and we sat in the “splash area -! think that Mrs. Macnab is still drying out. The next day, Saturday, it rained, so most of the girls set out to go shopping, but only half the girls made it. We got a little lost. Poor Shelly is still trying to recover from that! On Easter Sunday, we went to “Wet-n-Wild which was a sort-of aqua-fun- park, and Lisa's chocolate ice cream cone is probably still melting on the pavement. That evening we had Easter dinner at “The Sweden House, where we dined on the marvelous Florida moose. On Monday, we decided to stay at the hotel to watch the shuttle go off because of all the traffic. That morning the guys went golfing, but after three holes decided that there were too many snakes. Later on, we went to Disney World where we saw Cinderella's Castle and visited the Hall of Presidents, among other things. Leona's face is still green from the ride on Space Mountain. Tuesday was Orlando's first ninety-degree day of the season, so we sunned ourselves all day by the pool (Kim and Angie got a little too much sun!) and went to The EPCOT Center that night. EPCOT was fantastic and very educational; some of us liked it better than Disney World. On Wednesday, we visited the also educational Kennedy Space Center, which was very interesting; and then we headed for Cocoa Beach to spend the rest of the afternoon. For our last dinner in Florida, we ate at “The Cork and Cleaver, where Randy definitely got his money's worth. Our week there was wonderful, and we all owe A LOT to Mr. and Mrs. Macnab (alias “Mom and “Dad ) for helping to make it a fun, educational, and memora- ble experience. Thanks Mom and Dad! 20 Administration Administrative Staff (L-R) Mr Horst Lichtenberg (Superintendent of Schools). Mr Alan (L-R) Mrs Nelsma Troskowskt (Secretary). Keene also came within a whisker of the M.V.A.C. championship, barely losing out to Elizabethtown. No less than nine Keene players were cited for all- conference honors, with Darrin McDonough being named M.V.A.C. Player of the Year. )eff Shackett, Ethan Lawas, and Pete Voss joined him for first team honors, lay Dumas, Darryl McDonough and Scott Purdy were named to the All-Star second team, and Greg Dwight and Andy Dumas were given Honorable Mention. Ber- nie Corichi, Carl Lichtenberg, Curt LeClair, and Todd LeClair were the other key Keene performers. BOYS' BASKETBALL The young Beavers surprised many people by finish- ing second in the Marcy Conference with a 9-3 record. They were 13-8 overall. Probably the most thrilling game was when Keene came from fourteen points behind to beat Wells at the buzzer, 6058. Darrin McDonough set an all-time scoring record with 1,559 career points. He and his brother Darryl were on the All-Conference team. Other key performers included Jeff Shackett, lay Dumas, Pete Voss, Carl Lichtenberg, and freshman Andy Dumas who was eleventh in points per game in the conference. BOYS' BASEBALL At this writing Keene is looking forward to a good season with pitchers Darrin McDonough and Pete Voss, infielders Darryl McDonough and leff Shackett, and outfielder lay Dumas back as regulars from last year's championship team. Bernie Corichi, Carl Lichtenberg, Andy Dumas, Chuck Frost, and Todd LeClair are among those expected to also contribute a lot. We have not played a game yet because it will not stop snowing and raining. Last year the team won the M.V.A.C. South and the Section VII Championship with a 14-2 record. Coach Dumas JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL son with an overall record of 7 wins and 9 losses and a league record of 6 wins and 6 losses. The team placed fourth among the seven teams in the Marcy Conference. The Beavers twice defeated Long Lake, Minerva, and Newcomb. The team also defeated Mountainside Christian Academy. Several times the young Beavers lost very close games in the final seconds. Overall, this year proved to be a great learn- ing experience for these talented young athletes. Future Beaver Basketball Varsity and Junior Varsity teams will benefit greatly from these young stars' basketball skills . . . Keep up the good work boys! Coach Konowitz GIRLS' SOCCER The KCS Girls' Soccer team had a confusing, yet productive season. Due to a late decision as to who would be coaching, practices did not start until the first day of school. With several weekend practices and a very helpful workshop with Larry McFaddin from Mountainview Soccer Camp, we started our season with a game against Crown Point. Martha Bailie coached the first half of the season. Since she had not played since high school and had never coached this sport before, it was a learning experience for all. She greatly appreciated the assistance and enthusiasm which the girls brought to this endeavor. We worked hard to get the girls in physical shape and to polish our skills as best we could. Though the record of 2-8-2 does not sound winning, the games were never a rout and with each passing battle we showed great progress. Ron Konowitz took over the coaching for the sec- ond half of the season after our second meeting with Crown Point. This game was particularly emotional for all involved. We could see such improvement in our- selves and we knew if we even tied them that we could knock Crown Point out of first. The girls put forth a supreme effort but lost 1-0 in the last minute of overtime by a perfect shot on the goal. We won, too, that game. As sad and frustrated as we all were, we knew that we had truly played our best against the best Congratulations go to all members of the team, but special praise should go to our seniors: Julie Baird and Shelly LaRose (Marcy Conference First Team), Angela Rasco and Kim LeClair (Marcy Conference Honorable Mention); and also to Kim Combs and Beth LeClair (Marcy Conference Honorable Mention). 42 The J.V. Basketball team finished the 1982-1983 sea- Coach Bailie Sports Summary 1982-1983 GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL The girls' volleyball season ended in Lake Placid with a victory for the Varsity team. The Varsity finished the season with a 2-8 record and the )V's 1-8. By no means does the win-loss record reflect accurately the quality of the ball played by both teams. Even though the scores looked somewhat lopsided in a few games, both teams played very well. Poor serving is what killed chances of winning all season. The )V's improved throughout the season, and if their serving can be improved next year, they will be much more competitive. The Varsity was competitive all season. They lost some real heartbreakers, like the Minerva games of two points each. The girls played with all their hearts and showed improvement throughout the season The team will miss seniors Lisa Zelinski (also team captain) and Leona Wells. Each member of the squad contributed so much and worked with each other so well that it would be impossible to single any one or two players out. I have never coached a team at Keene which worked as hard together as the Varsity team. It was a short season with many ups and downs. I hope the girls enjoyed it as much as I did. I am looking forward to next year already. If we strengthen our serving, I believe we will be a team to be reckoned with. Congratulations team on a great beginning. GIRLS' SOFTBALL Last year the girls played an eleven game season. The season ended with 3 wins and 9 losses, two of them by 2 runs or less. The girls played hard all year but got many bad breaks. Doreen McDonough received the Most Valuable Player award for her efforts as pitcher all season. Shelly LaRose played a dazzling shortstop and would be missed in the 82-83 season. The team looks promising this year. At this time we have one victory over Chazy who totally dominated us last year. We also played tough against Crown Point who, as always, has a strong team. The girls and I are looking forward to a better season this year. lulie Baird, our starting center fielder, one of the best in the league, is one of our seniors. Kim LeClair, our other senior, is proving to be a most valuable player this year. Kim is sharing pitching responsibilities with Doreen McDonough and has also contributed at shortstop and right field. Both girls will be missed next year.
