Text from Pages 1 - 60 of the 1982 volume:

Dedication Jik. (J acnab Unlike Macbeth who believed that fair is foul and foul is fair, the Senior Class of 1982 feels that it is only fair to acknowledge our gratitude to the man who has so greatly contri- buted to the success of our senior year, Mr. Alan B. Macnab. We have benefited from the many programs and projects_which Mr,, Macnab has had a major role in organizing and encouraging, such as the chartering of a chapter of the National Honor Society, the production of the musical Bye, Bye. Birdie, the advising ol the Junior Class and the Student Council, and the teaching of S6V0273.1 ClaSSGS • In all fairness, we must point out that 'our deepest sense of gratitude comes from our appreciation of what Mr. Macnab has been to us personally. He has been a leader of our school that we all admire. At the same time, he has shown a personal con- cern and compassion for each student in the school. Although Mr. Macnab has been our principal for only one year, he will be one of our fairest memories of Keene Central School. In appreciation of all he has done and been, we dedicate this yearbook to him. 1 Memoriam Wilbur Edmonds, son of Raymond and Lena, was born, reared, schooled (except for college), and employed in this commu- nity. In 1937-1938, we called him twinkle-toes (he was a great dancer). Wilbur made his living at K.C.S. as a Business Education teacher for ten years and then went with IBM. We will all miss Wib as he was affectionately known. Ernie Kelley was a graduate of K.C.S. who spent 20 years of his life serving the com- munity in the capacity of a bus driver custo- dian at Keene Central. Ernie was an active member of this commu- nity who will certain- ly live on in the minds of those who knew him. Hannibal Edmonds, a native born son, came to K.C.S. on a sum- mer lend-lease cus- todial job. He made such a hit we kept him for 10 years, part of the time as a bus driver and majority of the time as a custodian. He was an outdoorsman, well-liked by every- one. His passing will leave a void in the hearts of many. Mae Broe came to this area from Conn- ecticut quite some years ago. She started as an elementary teacher in the then Keene school and trans- ferred to Keene Valley in 1937. She was a devoted, respected tea- cher for thirty years. Her involve- ment in community activities is remem- bered by many. Mae will be greatly missed. 2 Class of 1982 Top (L-R)s Brian Van Sise, Phil Heald, John Augustine. Jens is staying in Keene Valley with Mrs. Emily C. Neville, whose gener- osity we all appreciate. It didn't take long for Jens to fit right in here at KCSj he is well-liked by both students and teachers. Jens is an active parti- cipant in KCS' extracurricular activi- ties. He was on the Soccer team and Var- sity Basketball team, as well as being a member of the Yearbook Staff, National Honor Society, and the Junior Class. Jens is one of the top five skateboardists in Sweden, and showed us his talent at one of our record hops. Some of Jens' favo- rite pastimes are hiking, camping, swim- ming, and of course, skateboarding. We all feel very lucky here at KCS to have had Jens with us this year and we will surely miss him when he leaves. 16 Administration (L-R): Mr. Macnab, Mrs. Robillard, Mrs. Troskowski, Mr. Lich- tenberg. Their final record was 10-5-1• The Iron Man Defense at one point held opponents to_just_ one goal over a stretch of seven games. Key players in this unit were fullbacks Matt Dumas and Andy Frieary (both first team All- Conference), goalie Pete Voss (H.M. All-Conference), and excel- lent fullback Ethan Lawas. Center halfback Darrin McDonough (first team All-Conference) helped greatly in defense and also was co-leader in scoring (11 goals, 4 assists). Wing halfback Darryl McDonough (3 goals, 2 assists) and stri- ker Jeff Shackett (4 goals, 7 assists) also received All-Conference recognition. Matt Zelinski and Steve Hudson were also key mid- field players. Keene's starting line sported three superb ball-control ar- tists: Jens Skold (4 goals, 9 assists), Scott Purdy (6goals, 3 assists), and team co-leader Jay Dumas (12 goals, 3 assists). The Killer line of Jim Murphy, Phil Heald, and Paul McCoy gave them quality relief. . Jody Whitney, Carl Lichtenberg, Greg Dwight, Todd LeClair, and Paul Gillman rounded out this championship team. VARSITY BASKETBALL: The Beavers 14-6 record was the best since 1952. Three tight heart-breaking losses kept them from the league title. (One double-overtime, the others by one point!) For the second year in a row, Keene won a Christmas tour- nament (this time in Willsboro), beating Long Lake in overtime, 51-47, and Willsboro, 47-45. Darrin McDonough, although a Junior, set a team career scoring record when he passed the 955 set by Pat Whitney in 1975 Darrin is at 1099 and still going! (He was MVP of the Christmas tour- nament and first team All-Conference). Darryl McDonough was a tournament All-Star and second team All-Conference. Matt Dumas was also a tournament All-Star and he and Andy Frieary were both named H.M. All-Conference. Other key performers included 6'5” center Jim Murphy, and reserves Phil Heald, Jeff Shackett, and Brian Van Sise, Dave Mitchell, Steve Hudson, Ethan Lawas, Bernie Corichi, and Jens Skold rounded out the roster. JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL: By winning six of their final eight games, the JV's also had a winning season, going_9-8. Jay Dvunas, Andy Dumas, Carl Lichtenberg, Pete Voss, Jody Whitney, Bob Gif- ford, and Scott Purdy were the leading players. 31 Sports Summary 1981-82 VARSITY BASEBALL: At this writing, the team is leading the MVAC with a 10-0 overall record, behind the great pitching of Matt Du- mas and Darrin McDonough. Both are also infielders. The rest of the roster is: Catcher-infielders Pete Voss and Jim Murphy; Infielders Darryl McDonough, Jeff Shackett, and Brian Van Sise; Outfielders Andy Frieary, Jay Dumas, Phil Heald; Re- serves Andy Dumas, Carl Lichtenberg, Randy LeClair, and Chuck Frost. At this point the team batting average is .350! GIRLS SOCCER: This year's girls' soccer team had a new coach, Peter Mendelssohn. The girls gave it their best shot, but did not succeed in posting a winning season. Their sportsmanship was fantastic. The members of the team were: Shelly LaRose - Cap- tain, Beth LeClair and Julie Baird - Co-Captains, Kim LeClair, Angela Rasco, Becky Whitney, Tina Smith, Sheryll Strobeck, Heidi Sheasby, Heidi Gagnon, TiraFrost, Barbara Whitney, DoreenMc- Donough, and Maryam Davos. None of our girls are graduating this year, so with support, we are hoping for a winning season next year. GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: This year the girls began competing in the Marcy League, All their games were scrimmages but hopefully we will be part of the regular league schedule next year. The girls were enthusiastic and came along nicely as the season progressed. They have a lot to learn about the game but I am sure that next season will be productive. GIRLS SOFTBALL: The girls' team was led again this year by the consistent pitching of Doreen McDonough who, with the strong fielding of her defense, pitched a one-hitter against Westport. The girls had a disappointing season at times and got off to a slow start. They had the talent but lacked the confidence at times to play to their potential. Some of the outstanding players were as follows: Beth Le- Clair was a steadying influence catching. Shelly LaRose again played well at shortstop. Julie Baird was the heart of the out- field, and Marta Rasco was outstanding as a bunter, base stealer, and second baseman. 32 Coach Dumas and Coach Hickey Front (L-R): Matt Dumas, Jim Murphy, Andrew Frieary, Matt Ze- linski, Jeff Shackett, Ethan Lawas, Steve Hudson, Darrin McDon- ough, Phil Heald, Jens Skold, Jody Whitney. The Chair, as many of you already know, refers to the seniors' Chair, that they acquired in the tenth grade. Back in the earlier part of the year, a terrorist party was formed most- ly by Juniors and Sophomores, known as the KLO (Keene Liberation Organization). The main objective of this newly-formed KLO was to steal the Senior Chair. After the KLO stole the chair, the Seniors retrieved it and the ball bounced back and forth like- wise. The Seniors were quick to form their own organization, the SCIA (Senior Class Intelligence Agency). Mr. Macnab even got in on the fun, but at times it was hard to tell whose side he was really on. Admittedly, the SCIA had some good tricks up their sleeve (such as creating a duplicate chair) and they did have the chair for their Senior Trip—but we believe that the KLO has not been defeated yet. There were alot of jokes and pranks pulled all year concerning the chair, but it was all done in fun. The Chase for the Chair really helped to spice up life at KCS. 38 Back rows (L-R)s Miss Mulligan, B. LeClair, A. Dumas, M. Kasco, S. LaRose, Mrs. Dwight, L. Zelinski, Mrs. Dumas, Mrs. Glass, H.
