Sports Summary 1980-81 BOY'S VARSTTY SOCCER KCS struggled through a disappointing season due to the loss of key players Joe Augustine, Matt Zelinski, Rory Hanmer, and Jim Murphy to injuries and sickness. Nevertheless, the team was 4-8-1. Every game was close ex- cept one. Halfback Todd Purdy made first-team MVAC and was considered by many coaches the best player in the league. Andy Quinn and Andy Frieary were also MVAC all-stars, and Darrin McDonough made honorable mention. Quinn led the Beaver scorers, followed by Jeff Shackett, Mc- Donough, Purdy, and Jay Dumas. Frieary anchored a very strong defense, helped greatly by Matt Dumas, Steve Hudson, and Ethan Lawas. Freshman Darryl Mc- Conough did a terrific job replacing Augustine in the goal. The highlight of the season was a thrilling 1-0 upset over highly favored Elizabethtown. GIRL'S SOCCER Captains Kris Lawas and Lisa Zelinski led the girls soccer team through an ever improving season. Each game produced many outstanding performances. Many of the girls won player of the game' awards for their accomplishments. The whole team gained praise for their improvement from many referees and opposing coaches. With fourteen veteran soccer players returning, next year's squad has the capabilities of producing the best girl's soccer team record in KCS history. The keys to winning or losing will be the amount of practice time each girl gives to improving her soccer skills during the summer and the amount of dedication and discipline each girl brings to every practice and game. BOY'S VARSITY BASEBALL Only one senior graduated from last year's squad, and the Beavers expect a winning season this year behind a strong pit- ching staff of Matt Dumas, Todd Purdy, and Darrin McDonough. We had 15 people out of the team this spring and all were looking good at this writing. GIRL'S SOFTBALL The girl's softball team has out of its 16 players only one senior and one junior. It is a very inexperienced team, but also it is a strong team. We have improved our outfield, and our infield has also im- proved. Hitting has always been the weakest part of our game, but hopefully that will come around this year. If we can keep down the mental errors caused by inexperience and stay away from injuries, we should have a fine season. As a matter of fact, I'm hopeful it will be one of our best yet. 29
