Text from Pages 1 - 56 of the 1981 volume:

I would like to offer my heartfelt congratulations and apprecia- tion to all the members of the Yearbook Staff for the truly out- standing devotion to duty they displayed in producing this book of memories for the year 1981. Their wonderful spirit and enthu- siasm will always be an inspiration to me. A special thanks to Dedication The Yearbook Staff is pleased to announce the dedication of the 1981 Keene Central School Year- book to Mrs. Kathleen Purdy. Mrs. Purdy, the for- mer Kathleen McCourt, is a 1957 graduate of Keene Central School and is al- so a graduate of the State University College at Plattsburgh, where she was an excellent student. After completing her studies, she secured a teaching position at Keene Central, serving in that position as an ex- cellent teacher for the past 16 years. The en- thusiasm and dedication she has given to her pro- fession and students has always been of the highest order. She constantly displays an attitude of .Mu. CfCtUA4een uuly joy in learning and tries to instill this attitude in her students. Mrs. Purdy presently teaches Biology, Chemistry, Math 10, Math 11, and Math 12. She has been senior class advisor several times and has served as an officer in the Teacher’s Association and is now serving as a mem- ber of the Scholarship Committee. Mrs. Purdy is always willing to help her students, and she frequently goes way beyond the call of duty to do so. She is a cheerful, understanding, and caring person. Talented and ener- getic, she is well-liked by both students and colleagues. We arc grateful to have her as a member of our faculty and community. 1 THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 1981 Top (L-R): Andrew Quinn, Eric Johnson. Ck iuci 27 28 Sports Summary 1980-81 BOY'S VARSTTY SOCCER KCS struggled through a disappointing season due to the loss of key players Joe Augustine, Matt Zelinski, Rory Hanmer, and Jim Murphy to injuries and sickness. Nevertheless, the team was 4-8-1. Every game was close ex- cept one. Halfback Todd Purdy made first-team MVAC and was considered by many coaches the best player in the league. Andy Quinn and Andy Frieary were also MVAC all-stars, and Darrin McDonough made honorable mention. Quinn led the Beaver scorers, followed by Jeff Shackett, Mc- Donough, Purdy, and Jay Dumas. Frieary anchored a very strong defense, helped greatly by Matt Dumas, Steve Hudson, and Ethan Lawas. Freshman Darryl Mc- Conough did a terrific job replacing Augustine in the goal. The highlight of the season was a thrilling 1-0 upset over highly favored Elizabethtown. GIRL'S SOCCER Captains Kris Lawas and Lisa Zelinski led the girls soccer team through an ever improving season. Each game produced many outstanding performances. Many of the girls won player of the game' awards for their accomplishments. The whole team gained praise for their improvement from many referees and opposing coaches. With fourteen veteran soccer players returning, next year's squad has the capabilities of producing the best girl's soccer team record in KCS history. The keys to winning or losing will be the amount of practice time each girl gives to improving her soccer skills during the summer and the amount of dedication and discipline each girl brings to every practice and game. BOY'S VARSITY BASEBALL Only one senior graduated from last year's squad, and the Beavers expect a winning season this year behind a strong pit- ching staff of Matt Dumas, Todd Purdy, and Darrin McDonough. We had 15 people out of the team this spring and all were looking good at this writing. GIRL'S SOFTBALL The girl's softball team has out of its 16 players only one senior and one junior. It is a very inexperienced team, but also it is a strong team. We have improved our outfield, and our infield has also im- proved. Hitting has always been the weakest part of our game, but hopefully that will come around this year. If we can keep down the mental errors caused by inexperience and stay away from injuries, we should have a fine season. As a matter of fact, I'm hopeful it will be one of our best yet. 29 Sports Summary 1080-81 BOYS VARSITY BASKETBALL The school district was greatly excited about this group of boys who provided the first winning season for K.C.S. since 1952. The team finished 13-8 and if it weren't for some bad- ly placed injuries it would have been better. K.C.S. won the Moriah Christmas Tournament with big wins over Willsboro, 64-43, and Lone Lake, 52-43. Darrin McDonough was named tournament M.V.P. and Eric Johnson and Andy Frieary were named to the All-Tournament team. Beaver success was shared largely by eight individuals who could all play very well. Eric Johnson was All-Marcy Conference first team. He scored 250 points for a 15.6 average and ripped 24-5 rebounds for a 15 3 average. He also blocked innumerable shots and started many fast breaks. Darrin McDonough was All-Marcy Conference second team. On- ly a sophomore, he became the firsb K.C.S player in hisbory to tally 401 points in a season for a 19-1 average. He also tallied five assists per game. Matt Dumas was a work-horse forward who ripped 211 rebounds for 10.0 average. He averaged seven point a game, blocked many shots and started many fast breaks. He seemed to play even bet- ter in the pressure games. Andy Frieary did not record great offensive statistics for the season, but he was Keene's third best in rebound total and led the Marcy Conference in steals. He was the defensive spe- cialist who guarded the other team's star. Andy Quinn was third in points and third in assists. An- other player who saved his best games for the clutch, he scored around 20 points several times. In April, he was the M.V.P. for the Marcy League Seniors when they defeated the M.V.A.C. Seniors. 69-53- Todd Purdy, though injured for seven games, showed to be one of the_greatest passers in Keene history, tallying over 10 assists many times. He was also a key defensive player. Big Jim Murphy was an awesome reserve forward who came off the bench often to rip rebounds, block shots, and score points. Freshman Darryl McDonough, pressed into action when Todd was some great clutch basketball, and in one game teamed with his brother for nearly 40 points. Paul McDoy, Phil Heald, and Brian Van Sise also saw action m some of the Beaver games this year. We hope to see Darrin, Matt, Darryl, Andy, Jim, and some of the J.V. boys lead Keene to many more victories next year. Remember this mottos THE BUCK STOPS HERE! JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL Mr. Konowitz's charges were 4-15 for the season, but im- proved greatly from game to game. Phil Heald and Brian Van Sise were the top scorers and rebounders, but many other players, in- cluding Jeff Shackett, Ethan Lawas, Jody Whitney, Jay Dumas, Carl Lichtenberg, and Andy Dumas looked very strong for the future. 30 Soccer Back: Coach Dumas, M.
