J fJaWf ' ■ SST B RAIDER DEDICATION Mr. David Mesimore has been a dedicated faculty member at W.J. Keenan for sixteen years. He has been a teacher, athletic director and above all, a friend to the students at Keenan. The 1987-88 yearbook staff is proud to dedicate the yearbook to Mr. Mesimore. Mr. Mesimore ' s story began on November 4, 1947 in the town of Salisbury, North Carolina. His proud parents are William and Rachel Mesimore. Young David attended Wiley Elementary School where he was an outstanding student. His family was active in Bible School and other youth activities. Mr. Mesimore went to Knox Junior High where he received excellent grades which prompted his teachers to write comments such as David has been a pleasure to teach and David always does his best. After junior high school, Mr. Mesimore moved on to Boyden High School. In high school he maintained a 4.0 average and graduated with honors in June, 1966. As a reward for all his hard work in high school, Mr. Mesimore ' s parents bought him a Volkswagen bug . In September, 1966, Mr. Mesimore packed up his Volkswagen and set out for college. He attended Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina. In college he majored in math and learned all the math facts he has been teaching his students at Keenan. His senior year he was a student teacher at Silva Weber High School. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Western Carolina in 1970. After college Mr. Mesimore moved to Columbia, South Carolina where he entered the University on South Carolina to pursue his master ' s degree, which he received in 1971. In the fall of 1970, Mr. Mesimore began his teaching at W.J. Keenan High School. Over the years he has taught a variety of math courses with his main emphasis now on upper level math courses such as Algebra Ill Trigonometry and Calculus. Mr. Mesimore was involved in coaching football and track during his early years at Keenan. He took over as Athletic Director in 1979 and has held that position ever since. He has been the sponsor of the Block K Club for a number of years and a class sponsor for the past four years. Although Mr. Mesimore spends a lot of time at Keenan, he is also very involved in his church. He attends Trinity Lutheran Church where he has served as the President of the Congregation and has been the chairperson of the Educational Ministry Committee. He has also been the Sunday School Superintendent. He is presently a Lector, a Lay Reader in the congregation and has been a Youth Advisor for three years. Pastor McLaniel of Trinity Lutheran Church says David is very dependable, reliable and he always does an outstanding job in all his endeavors. He is respected by both youths and adults at his church. Thank you Mr. Mesimore for all the long hours you put in to help the coaches, athletes, and everyone else you come in contact with. Keep up the good work and congratulations on this well deserved honor. We love you! • ' p $ - k ' - JHHK V i — J BB MR. DAVID FRANKLIN MESIMORE There comes a time in life when change is necessary, when the old must be replaced by the new. It is with this thought in mind that this year ' s yearbook theme — Changing Our Image — came to be . . In many ways Keenan High School proved itself to be a dynamic institution; changing its image in nearly every facet of academic, athletic, and student life. The year marked ordinary and extra ordinary events which shaped the future for all the students, faculty, and administration. For many students it was a year of goodbyes, as they stepped into the working world, and for many others it was a year of hellos, as they stepped into a different environment. The Raider Rubber Band performs a unique show in the stands. Four students get acquainted with each other at the beginning of school. During the morning, students rush to class to get a quality education. cmmm Student Body Vice-President, Anthony Jones says a good ctieer over the P.A. system. OUR IMAG KEENAN HIGH In 1960, there was a small forest where W.J. Keenan High School now stands. Rumor has it that two youngsters accidentally set fire to the forest, clearing a very large area of land. Someone suggested building a school on this newly cleared land, and W.J. Keenan Junior High School was thereby conceived. Its doors were opened in 1963, joining Cray ton Junior High School as a feeder school to A.C. Flora High School. At the time, W.J. Keenan was the most modern school building in South Caroli- na. It consisted of the office area, health room and the mechanical drawing room. It has the distinction of being the first air-conditioned school in South Carolina! In 1969, the gymnasium, shop, and 300 building classrooms were added. Also, this was the last year Keenan was to remain a junior high school. The 1970-71 school year saw Keenan become the area ' s ninth high school and the first completely integrated school. Keenan High received students from A.C. Flora and C.A. Johnson High Schools through the enactment of the new zoning boundaries brought about by the desegregation of Richland County School District One. Keenan was built to educate about 900 pupils, but it opened as a high school in 1970 with grades nine, ten, and eleven, comprising a student body of 1200 students! Every teacher was overloaded, and space became a real problem. Ten portable classrooms were brought in, and classes were held in the gym until spare rooms could be found. A comprehensive high school was established in the fall of 1971 with grades of nine, ten, eleven, and twelve. Keenan ended this first year with an enrollment of approximately 1450 students. Other additions were completed in the spring of 1973. Added were the athletic complex, band department, teacher ' s cafeteria and lounge, 500 building class- rooms and media center, business education and graphic-communications wing. The old library became what is now the main office and guidance complex with the student affairs moving into the old office area. Since Keenan was now a high school, a new mascot was chosen — Raider. Blue and Gold were selected as the school ' s colors. Improvements of Physical facilities continued. A new, fully lighted student park- ing lot, bus parking lot, three athletic fields, baseball diamond, three tennis courts, and outside basketball courts were completed in 1973. W.J. Keenan received membership in the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges and was reevaluated by this association in the spring of 1978, again receiving full privileges and scholastic recognition. Keenan is also a member of the South Carolina High School League ' s AAA Athletic Conference. 10 YEARS OF SaCCESSII During the summer of 1976, extensive remodeling made important changes in the home economics, food careers, office occupations, distributive education, fashion merchandising, art. graphics, and industrial arts teaching areas. These changes greatly enhanced the instructional processes within these classrooms; both students and teachers benefited from better utilization of space and facilities. Renovations on four science lecture and lab areas and two social studies class- rooms began during the 1982-83 school year and were completed at a cost of over $300,000. Construction on the new 500 seat theatre began in June. 1982. and was ready for student, community, and district use in November. 1983. Keenan is proud of its new theatre and looks forward to the many educational and cultural events it will help bring to our community. The Board of Commissioners and Superintendent. Dr. Gordon McAndrew. are to be thanked for the guidance and assistance they gave to making the Keenan Theatre a reality. William J. Keenan. for whom the school is named, served on the Columbia Public School Board from 1934 until 1959. A native of Columbia. Mr. Keenan was Chairman of the Board of Keenan Oil Company. His portrait hangs in the Theatre forever. Keenan is a thriving school with a comprehensive curriculum and an expected enrollment for 1988-89 of approximately 1400 students. It has come a long way in 27 years from the little patch of forest off Pine Belt Road! Keenan has grown and changed as its needs have grown and changed. ALMA MATER Keenan High, we do adore thee. Ever would we praise they name. Fill our lives with zeal and courage As we live from day to day. Guardian of our halls of learning. Blessed mother of the free. Teach us how to love each other As we seek and learn to be. Hail to thee, dear Alma Mater. Guardian of the right we adore. Love and truth and sacred honor. Lead our paths from shore to shore. Hail to thee, our own dear Keenan, May your praises wave on high. We ' ll come back to you. dear Keenan, From thy walls we will ne ' er depart. To some it means more responsibility, priviledges, and prestige over underclassmen. And to others it means only one more year of homework, classes, and receiving diplomas. But to all it means setting higher goals, applying to colleges, and the feeling of becoming an adult. We interviewed some seniors and here are a few responses: Being a senior to me means the fulfillment of my goals that are important to me. It means maturity in a sense, because I ' ve lost most of the childishness I had in my younger years. It also means growth. Being a senior is something to be proud of; it is a goal worth fulfilling. — NICOLE SMITH To be called a senior makes one feel more mature. As a senior you must accept the responsibilities given to you. You should help others. I personally like being looked up to. It may be hard to be a role model but, I ' ll overcome. Overall it is a fulfilling experience to remember for all times. — DEXTER MARCUS PRIMUS Being a senior is more than just being called a senior. Being a senior is a very meaningful experience. You must act like a senior; have pride and self-esteem. Along with being a senior comes responsibility. You must learn how to accept those responsibilities and go on with your life. — SHANAl CHRISTOPHER It means that I only have 138 more days left in high school. But seriously, it means that I have prestige and priority over the underclassmen. Now, I am beginning to really look forward to college life! Although, the work is harder in the 12th grade, I ' m just loving every minute of it!!!!!!!! — JACQUELINE MURRY 14 The Great ' 88. dominate! Can You Name These Three Stooges? Keenan ' s proud 1987-88 Teacher of the Year. She is dedicated and lil es to help students learn and grow. Mrs. Cochran is teacher of Marketing Education, Fashion Merchandising, Business Law, and Introduction to Business. She also has taught Typing and Accounting in the past. Mrs. Cochran has been the sponsor of the DECA Club since her arrival at Keenan. Mrs. Cochran ' s students gain a lot of knowledge through her class lectures and prearranged activities. She takes the time to make sure each student fully understands the lessons in her classes. Mrs. Cochran said, was surprised and very honored when I found out I would represent my co- workers. This award is once-in-a-lifetime. I feel it is a great responsibility and I must be aware of all that I do each day. She also went on to say that she enjoys working with young people and likes to see them mature into productive citizens. Mrs. Cochran enjoys reading books, working in her garden, playing cards, and performing church and civic work. She is the President of the Altrusa Club, Secretary of the Church Member Trustee Board, and is presently part of the Urban League Gill, a Support group of the Urban League. She also is a member of the Fidelity Club and her church choir. Mrs. Cochran is a person who loves to see young people grow and gain knowledge. She takes much enjoyment in working with people. She strongly believes in the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Mrs. Cochtan has been at Keenan for many years and has been an inspiration to many of her past students. MRS. LGRENA COCHRAN 63 Keenan High has always been known for its spirit and participa- tion in its school related activities. This is especially true in all of the clubs, sports, and academics. Some students found them- selves staying after school for many hours working on projects, school-work, practices, games, and other activities. Also, most of the clubs sponsored some sort of sale or shows. These sales ranged from doughnuts to M and M ' s to talent shows. Sporting events were one of the biggest ways students showed their spirit besides pep rallies. Students from all grades came to the football games and other sports events to support the Raid- ers. At the Homecoming game, a couple of guys take ttieir time to show their Raider spirit. In the Class Pageant. Andress Carter models in front of the microphones. Dee Jones and her friends head for the cafeteria to present their food basket. HOMECOMING ' 87 HOMECOMI On the cold evening of October 16th, the raider football team hosted Aiken for the 1987 Homecoming. As the senior contes- tants were announced, the audience was captivated by each young lady. Everyone realized that all the girls were winners, but only one would become Miss Homecoming of 1987-88. A mo- ment of silence arose as the tension grew. Finally the moment everyone had been awaiting — Yvette Alexander was named first runner-up and Sharone Solone was crowned Miss Home- coming Queen. The theme for the 1987-88 pageant was We ' ve Only Just Begun , and that emulates the goals of all the people involved. The KM-KEEPiAn MAN SENIORS HALL OF FAME For the first time seniors were elected by their teachers into the Senior Hail of Fame. But what is the Senior Hall of Fame? The Senior Hall of Fame is a chance for teachers to honor students the spirit of Keenan. The criteria ranged anywhere from being a consistent stu- dent to having an optimistic attitude. The list continues with the maturity of the student, the sense of responsibility the student. The class of 1988 is proud to present the following students as the first inductees into the Senior Hall of Fame. who they feel have strongly supported of the student and the school spirit of 78 Thank you for this prestigious award. I ' m thrilled to be one of the first and few inducted into the Senior Hall of Fame. This is an unforgetable moment and one that I will keep close to my heart. — Karen Jones I am honored to know that the W.J. Keenan staff members fee! that I am a loyal and worthy raider. I accept this honor with great pride. — Eric Quzack I would first like to thank the person who nominated me because he she felt I was wor - thy of the honor as a member of the Senior Hall of Fame. Then I would like to thank my parents for giving me the love, attention and guidance that helped me to develop a positive attitude. — Aquinetta Brown Being inducted into the Senior Hall of Fame is a great honor, and I appreciate those who thought I de- served this outstanding award. — Thomas Moody This is a very prestigious award. I am very honored to be named as one of the recipients. Its nice to know that at least one teacher has thought highly enough of me to consider me a worthy person. — Kenya Qallion Doing it together is the key word in an organization. Soap operas and homework were not the only two after-school options for students. Many clubs and members of clubs offered opportu- nities to exp and their horizons not available in the classroom. Some of these groups provided help to the community and the school. Others consisted of members with special interests. Although they varied in size and in purpose, each club was similar in that the members, officers, and sponsors combined efforts to provide fun and productive activities. Through their activities and service, they further continued the tradition of excellence in our school. Excuse me. are you there? Can you pick out the possessed persons? Tdered one of the mowHJ wrSrnfCTUMra all. Its responsibility Is to manufacture a yearbook by the end of the year. In order to do this, they have to meet deadlines and sell ads. The editors, Thomas Moody and Kenya Gallion, were able to complete the cover and the color pages by working with former advisor, Susan Bloodworth and 1987-88 advisor Juanita Wilson. They wouldn ' t have been able to complete these tasks without the help of all the members of each yearbook division. Through all the work, each staff member learned that the key ingredient to producing the Keenanscope was working together and getting along with one another. The Newspaper Staff The newspaper staff is dedicated to providing the students at W.J. This year ' s football season was especially exciting. The Raiders dominated almost every team they played. They stomped on arch rival C.A. Johnson and walked all over Strom Thurmond. Although they suffered many injuries this season Keenan still prevailed. The Raiders proved that it doesn ' t take just a few awesome players to win a game, but it takes many good players who play well together. Getting to be as good as they are didn ' t come easy. It took a lot of time, hard work, and dedication on the players ' part which included summer practices, after school functions, and exclusion from Homecoming activities such as the parade and half-time ceremonies. Setting up at the line, the Raiders get ready to gain more yardage against their opponents. Handing off the ball, demands speed and accura- cy. 102 103 It ' s a bird, it ' s a plane, no it ' s Walter Pay ton! Big Bobby rumbles through the crowd making an enormous play. The young team proved, not only to themselves, but to the mem- bers of the Region 5-AAA Conference that they would be very difficult to de- feat. The team proved that they were a SHOOTING FOR SUCCESS tough team to beat by defeating A.C. Flora and defeating C.A. Johnson, twice. With only one senior starting, the talented team posted a mark better than last year ' s team. With Travis Gar- rett, Andre Bovain, and Bobby Davis returning, the Raiders have bright hope for the future. It took hard work, determination, and excellent coaching by Coach Trapp to be as successful as we have been. Those were the words of returning guard Travis Garrett about the success the team has had. Newcomers include juniors Byron James and Reggie Brown. I feel that tennis is a great sport that people of all ages and abilities can enjoy. It offers a highly competitive format but only requires one other person and a mini- mum of equipment. It is ideally suited to our climate since enjoyable outdoor days occur through the year in South Carolina. It is a sport that challenges ones athletic ability, but is not dominated by people of extrodinary physical gifts. Rather, the strategy of the game often enables the smarter, but less gifted player a chance for success. I love to play and coach it. Coach Fuzzy Thompson SNAPSHOTS OF TOMORROW ' S ATHLETES 116 HOT FROM THE FIELD Although I have been coaching soccer for one year at W.J. Keenan High, I have thoroughly enjoyed working along with the players and sharing my gained knowledge with them. Piot only have I enjoyed coaching them, I have also enjoyed my friendship with them. Many times coaches are viewed as dictators who only care about his teams ' status rather than the players ' welfare. I pride myself in thinking that I am a friend as well as a coach. Coach Krolewriez As a woman coaching a male sport all the obvious feelings apply. Yes — score one for Women ' s Lib, but most of all score a million for a great group of baseball players who love their sport enough to play regardless of any spe- cial circumstances. They are the ones who influence my enjoyment of every aspect of our team effort; from condi- tioning to winning. Volin The yearbook staff is dedicating this page in memory of Mrs. Adele L. Volin for all the time and effort she put in at Keenan. Mrs. Volin typed all the senior indexes for the past two yearbooks. She also typed and wrote articles for the school newspaper. Mrs. Volin worked with the PTSA and served on the committee to select a new principal for Keenan two years ago. When there was a threat to close Keenan, she wrote letters and attended meetings to protest this decision. Mrs. Volin always fought for what was in the best interest for Keenan. The newspaper and yearbook staffs will surely miss her. May she rest in peace.
