King, jr., was born july 14, 1919. in Youngstown, Ohio. where he developed an intrinsic love of nature and life alfresco. As a Life Scout, his enchantment with the outdoors grew steadily. An Ohio Yankee in King Yale's Court . Admiral King attended that renowned University from which he received a Bachelor of Engineering degree in 1941. While at Yale Admiral King was a member of Tau Beta Pi and Sigma Xi honorary fraternities. Commissioned june 17. 1941. he reported on board the light cruiser TRENTON where he realized a flourishing penchant for life at sea. In the Pacific Theater with the newly commissioned light cruiser MOBILE, Admiral King participated in the 1945 Pacific and 1944 Asiatic Pacific raids, earning the Navy Commendation Medal in 1945. A subsequent Gold Star in lieu of his second award was presented him in 1965 for meritorious service as Assistant Chief of Staff to Commander SEVENTH Fleet. As Commander Destroyer squadron ONE he received the Bronze Star Medal. The citation read: Through his professional competence, sound judgement, and dedicated leader- ship...he was responsible for superior performance by units of Task Group 77.8 under his command, signif- icantly advancing naval combat effectiveness in South- east Asia and enhancing professional respect for U.S. Navy capabilities in the combat environment. From 1948 to 1949 he was a student at the Naval Postgraduate School and later, M.l.T., receiving his Masters degree in Nuclear Physics in 1951. He ad- ditionally received instruction at the Naval War College. During the Korean Conflict he was commanding officer of the destroyer escort BACHE. Subsequent assignments included duty with the staff of Commander Carrier Division SIXQ as executive officer of the destroyer MOALEg commanding officer of the destroyer tender YELLOWSTONEQ Commander Destroyer Division 6013 commanding officer of the Nuclear Weapons Training Center, Atlanticg and exec- utive assistant and senior aide to the Chief of Naval Operations. He assumed his present command, Commander Antisubmarine Warfare Group ONE, in july of 1968.
