captain leonard m. nearman commanding officer The Commanding Officer has absolute responsi- bility for the safety, well-being. and efficiencv of his command, except when relieved by competent authority. His authority is delegated by him to subordinates for execution of detail. but this, in no way, relieves him of his responsibility. He is the ship. It is a position com- manding great respect, but at the same time, incurring equally great responsibility. Captain Nearman became the 23rd Commanding Officer of KEARSARGE on january 17, 1969. relieving Captain Creighton W. Cook. lt marked the beginning of a milestone in Captain Nearmans many faceted career. He quickly displayed his interest in maintaining the KEARSARGE reputation of Best in the XVest and showed considerable concern for the morale of the crew. They. in turn, dubbed him Top Cat . Captain Nearman came to KEARSARGE with an extensive background in aircraft carrier operations and aviation, having received his commission and avi- ator's wings in june of 19-141. In addition to XX!orld XVar ll and Korea fighter and attack combat flying, Captain Nearman has been active in fleet aircraft test and eval- uation. guided missile research and development, elec- tronic warfare. amphibious warfare. anti-submarine warfare, and tactical command systems planning. Previous commands include: Attack Squadron lVAl 76. Carrier Air Group fCAGl Seven, and USS Muliphen.
