Captain Benjamin C. Tate Commanding Officer Captain Tate entered the Navy late in 1941 via the Naval Aviation program. Upon being commissioned an Ensign, he was assigned to a patrol squadron at which time he received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Purple Heart and the Navy Cross. Following World War II, Captain Tate was assigned to VP-3 and as scheduling and flight officer for Naval Aviation Ord- nance Test Center, Chincoteague, Virgin- ia. He later served as Air ASW Systems Officer in the Air Branch of the Office of Naval Research, Washington, D.C.; Exec- utive Officer and Commanding Officer of VS-36; Air Systems Officer in ASW FOR- LANT; Commander ASW Air Group 58; and Operations Officer and Executive Of- ficer of the USS RANDOLPH. Prior to assuming command of the USS KEARSARGE, Captain Tate commanded the USS NAVASOTA.
