In particular, I am deeply appreciative of the cooperation I have received from the class officers and from the yearbook staff members. Few people realize the tremendous amount of planning and work that is needed to publish a quality yearbook. On my behalf and that of the class, I would like to thank Miss Judy Louisot for the time and energy she has contributed to us as yearbook advisor. During the last four years (and even longer for some class members), I have developed what I hope will be lasting friendships with many of you. Sadly, some other friendships have deteriorated. Perhaps this is an indication that it is not prudent for an administrator to work in the capacity of a class sponsor. I would like to thank all of you for the friendship you have shown me and I wish all of you a great deal of love, happiness and success in the years to come. Sincerely yours. SPORTS IN MEMORIAM THOMAS KRULIK My mind recalls him yelling at me. I recall his gitty smile and the way he used to advise me to open up my stride. I can also remember our team bus. That was his old beat up Ford station wagon. I remember the locker room speeches he used to make. In a half-hour's time he could take a bunch of numb skulls and have them ready to run from here to California and back again. He was exciting to listen to whether he was joking with you or yelling at you. In his career as a coach, he brought many championship teams to our high school time and time again. Unfor-tuantely, I'd be willing to bet that many of these went unnoticed. Although this may have been true, he knew what winning was, and he also knew what being a champion was. A major part of his life was embedded and invested in that cinder trail in the stadium. I was never a good runner, and I never succeeded in winning a medal or placing in a race, my only consolation was that I was a part of his team. It didn't matter whether you carried a first place finish in a relay race or whether you just carried the first aid kit to the meet, you were one of his men. If life goes on, let us stop for maybe just one minute and look at the life that was divided into three seasons: fall, winter, and spring. SENIOR HO VIEROOINKS 301 178 OtiL 181 ODE TO A HOMEROOM For only one sixth of an hour, a very small part of the day, You sit in your homeroom for attendance, of course in the usual way. The homeroom is filled with faces, some interesting, some not all there Some talk, some don't, some are gone for the day, and some seem n'er to care. But yet there is a special charm, an unbreakable spell you can't deny, And most times laughs and memories, good times money can't buy. Yes, this is the homeroom we see every day and will never in our lives forget, For it's one more part of the school we leave, and the easiest class you could get. And then again homeroom was a place of many uses, each to his very own, For gossip, or sleep, or homework not done a place so very well known. The announcement gems heard for the day, your counselor in and out A sales pitch for tickets, corsages, boosters, that's what homeroom's about. A place to do something or nothing, or merely just to be late, It seems no matter how hard you try it's never twenty-five after eight. Thrown together for sake of the alphabet, a group again you may never see, Remember that this was your homeroom, and the faces and memories attached for you to keep. MJ 184 SENIOR DIRECTORY LOUIS C. One that allows you to choose, if you qualify, an “alma mater before you enlist. (Normally a participating school in your home area.) So no matter which college or colleges you attend while in the Army, you’ll know beforehand the courses you’ll need for credit at the school you want to graduate from. “Secondly, the Army provides financial aid. College courses are available to you while you're in the .Army. And the Army will pay up to 75% of the tuition for these courses. (After your enlistment’s over, you'll be eligible for 36 months of financial assistance under the G.I. Bill.) “We, in the educational community, are enthusiastic about this new plan. In fact, many of us believe Project .Ahead will be as important to young people entering the .Army as the G.I. Bill has been to veterans’.’ 800 schools and the Army arc making college a reality for more young people. “About eighteen months ago, the Army began to develop a bold, new concept in cooperative education. Project Ahead. “'Hie program began at one university in the Midwest. Interest was so great the .Army decided to expand it across the country. Today, the program involves more than 800 colleges and universities. And it’s still growing. “Project Ahead’s structure is basically simple. But its benefits to young people and their parents arc enormous. Dr. Arthur G. Hansen President, Purdue University Now you don’t have to choose between serving your Country and continuing your education. “Project Ahead is the most exciting idea in education that the Army has ever offered. “Too often people in the service have taken college courses from one school, only to learn later those courses would not apply toward their degrees. Project Ahead intends to change all that. “'Hie Army, together with over 800 colleges and universities, has a plan. A cooperative system that lets you know ahead of time which courses you’ll Ahead: need for credit at the school you’ve applied to and want to graduate from. “You'll be receiving up to 75% of the tuition for college courses you take while in the Army. .And now you can make sure you get credit for the college courses you successfully complete. “Project Ahead is by no means a free ride. Because while you’re working toward a college degree, you'll be serving your country. “You’ll be a soldier full lime. A student part time. You’ll train hard, you’ll work hard. .And you’ll find that although a few years in the Army isn’t the easiest way to earn a college education, it may be the most rewarding!’ Gen. REID FOR FUNERALS I dreamed I stood in a studio, and watched two sculptors there; The clay they used was a young child's mind, and they fashioned it with care. One was a teacher; the tools he used were books, and music, and art; The other a parent, who worked with a guiding hand and a gentle, loving heart. Day after day, the teacher toiled, with touch that was deft and sure While the parent labored by his side, and polished and smoothed it o’er. And when at last their task was done, they were proud of what they had wrought. For the things they had molded into the child could neither be sold nor bought. And each agreed he would have failed if he had worked alone. For behind the teacher stood the school, and behind the parent, the home. Ms. HELEN C. McCORMICK President N.Y. State Teachers Assoc.
