Thomas A. Shanks was born on July 24, 1952. Tommy attended Washington School where his activity and leadership earned him the presidency of the Student Council. Graduating with honors on June 15, 1966, Tommy entered the Freshman Class of Kearny High School. All who came to know Tommy came to love him. On March 28, 1967, a tragic accident brought death to the Shanks’ home. We who knew him will never forget the curly-haired blond, his broad smile, his sincere love of all around him. As we, the Senior Class, present our 1970 yearbook, we also present our love, our respect, and our sorrow for a beloved friend. Senior Play 320 COLLEGE AVENUE At a sorority house a party is in full swing. Everyone is having fun dancing when Judy (Linda Signore) screams finding her partner Lee (Ray Cirz) lying dead on the floor. Who killed him? And why? To find these answers the chief of police (Gary Cappetta) and his assistant (Jeff Levitt) are called to the scene. While trying to solve the crime a second murder takes place when Val (Dave Levy) is found dead. Who will be next? Judy isn’t about to wait to find out, she gets permission to conduct the investigation and through being clever and skillful finds out that the rat is Russ (Scott Nichols). LITTLE ANTHONY and THE IMPERIALS On February 26 the Senior Class of Kearny High School was proud to present a night of enjoyable entertainment featuring Little Anthony and the Imperials” plus the “Kidd Brothers”. The music ranged from Tears on My Pillow” and Going Out of My Head”, which brought back memories, to Let the Sunshine In”, which kept the whole audience moving. THE KIDD BROS. IN ACTION This Magic Moment The Junior Prom of 1969 was held at the Fountain in Belleville. Music was provided by a popular group, “The Drifters’ . Queen of the Prom was Pat Ward, her escort was James Gaffney. Her court included Linda Signore, Sharyn Michallis, Jeanette Dvarackas and Sharon Sterople. POWDER PUFF FOOTBALL GAME On December 17, the first annual Powder Puff Superbowl game was played between the senior and junior girls. Senior boys took the place of the cheerleaders and twirlers. The seniors on the team will never forget the year when they as sophomores had a season of 8-1 and held their opponents scoreless for 31 consecutive quarters. This year s captains were Bob D’Alessio and Gary Halliwell. For the first time, the Kearny-Montclair game was televised. Front Row: Hompesch, Arcidiacono, Haberthur, Fikslin, Hill, Campbell. Soccer The K.H.S. soccer team, spurned on by co-captains Ricky McLaren and Ken Forfar, turned out a winning season. Other seniors who deserve recognition are Henry Szynalski, who helped put points on the board and newcomer Bob Kirk who shored up the defense. Coach Dzuroska is expecting a lot from returning Oliver Vasic, an all-county selection. - Basketball Coach Wynne and his team enjoyed a winning season of 13-9 and a shot at the State Tournament. Although they were defeated by Weequahic in the first round, nothing can be taken away from a valiant effort by the team. Top scorers were Ken Forfar and Dennis Bigler. Next year the team should fare well with Jerry Fitzsimmons and Jim Gaffney returning. Swimming The Swim Team had an outstanding season this year with John Osborne winning all of his meets but one, and Bob Kirk compiling the highest amount of points for the team. Many records were broken with valiant team efforts. Osborne and Kirk were selected to swim in the state meets. 1970 K.H.S. Swim Team. Crew Crew is a relatively new sport to Kearny High. In this, its junior year, the team is steadily improving. Practice depends on what time the tide comes in and crew members have been out as early as 5 a.m. The team has fared well against the long-established squads from Belleville and Nutley. However, most of the boys on the crew team are seniors and a larger turnout of undergraduates is needed. Front Row: Greene, Meyler, Ryan, Ball. Second Row: Schappert, Notte, Kain, Schappert. Preczewski. Back Row: Gelcius, Meyler, Levy. SENIOR MEMBERS—Front Row: Sion, Marr, Oliver, Mlodgenski, Szynalski. Back Row: Reiser, Heslen, D’Alessio, MacConchie. Track The track team began an overpowering season this year. The cocaptains of the runners were Bob D’Alessio and Bill Decker. The Captain of the field men was Dave Walsh. Coaches Krulik and Price relied on the senior members of the team for an outstanding season. From the outdoor track team evolved a state championship two-mile relay team which consisted of Bob D’Alessio, Carl Marr, Joe Hughes and Bill Decker. Sitting: Plesnarski, Nichols, Ficeto. Beesley. Standing: luzzolino, Battista, Annone. Tennis The tennis team coached by Walter Dzuroska, hoped for a relatively fair season. Although the sport .isn’t new to Kearny High, most of the team members were new to the sport. The team underwent several changes only to finish with a predicted season.
