CARR He broke fresh ground—because, and only because, he had the courage to go ahead without asking whether other's were following or even understood. He had no need for the divided responsibility in which others seek to be safe from ridicule, because he had been granted a faith which required no confirmation—a contact with reality, light and intense like the touch of a loved hand: a union in self-surrender without self-destruction, where his heart was lucid and his mind loving. In the sun and wind, how near and how remote—How different from what the knowing ones call Mysticism. —Markings Push off, and silling ire in order smite The sounding furroics; for my purpose holds To sail beyond the sunset and the baths Of all the western stars, until I die. The team should come back next year with another winning season. The team finished with an 8 and 6 season. BASKETBALL The Basketball team finished on the winning side this year with a 12-10 record. Mike Landi and Jerry Krzeckowski led the Kards in scoring with 15 point averages. This year’s captains were Mark Hellriegel and Bob Bubenas. The Kards made the state tournament but lost their first game to eventual champion, East Orange. Next season’s captains are Ken Forfar and Dennis Bigler. Front Row: Landi, Hellriegel, Bubenas, Krzeczkowski, Back Row: Kelly, Bigler, Darney, Forfar, Thrash, Palmer, Coach Wynne. SOGGE The young and rebuilding soccer team managed to break even this season with a .500 season. All state and Junior Olympic star, Albie Lawrance, scored 14 goals while a strong defense led by Ricky McLaren and goalie Ken Forfar made things tough for opposing booters. Injuries to starters Steve Shanks and Joe Marshall hurt the Kards in their 1-0 loss to traditional rival Harrison. The 1968-9 Kearny Swim Team. SWIM TEAM 1968-69 Front Row: Miranda, Pallotti, Nehls, Dietz, Gillespie, Bennison, Griswold, Wood, Manager; Tomfelt. Second Row: Strauch. Rubin (time keepers); Martin, Green, Garbowski, Kelly, Brown. Hutler, Mag. Kirk. Kunigk. Kelly, Schalk, Mr. Gibson, Coach. Back Row: Kurtzer, Stanford. Beesely. Femano. Wigdell, Osborne. Walsh, Scott, Kelly. Swimmers take your mark! Bob Kirk shows fine breast-stroke form. SWIMMING Co-Captains Bill Bennison and Fred Gillespie led Coach Gibson to a third winning season. During the season, 7 school records were broken which helped them march to 8-5-1 season. Seniors holding records are Bill Bennison, Fred Gillespie, Pete Kunigk, Jim Schalk. BASEBALL 1969 The Kards had a fine season in the Big Ten this year as Dave Palmer, Steve Turowski and Ken Forfar pitched them to a winning season in Coach Wynne's first varsity season. Mike Landi, Bob Bubenas, Mark Hellriegel, Hugh Mac Donald and Steve Shanks were also steady on the squad. John DeVincenzo proved himself to be a proficient shortstop as well as a good hitter. This year the Kardinals took the Greater Newark Tournament. Returning next year will be pitcher Mel “Red” Griffin, catcher Gary Yagiello and Ken Forfar. TRACK The Track team got off to a fast start this year by overpowering Central High School of Newark and Nutley High School. Captained by Junior Bob D’Ales-sio, the team is powerful in both Track and Field. The Kards should finish with a strong record possibly losing only one or two meets. Coaches Mulligan and Krulik. Hurdler Vinnie Carcha. D'Allesio, Carcha, Reiser, Aiello. Senior Art Turnbull. It may be that the gulfs will wash us down; It may be we shall touch the Happy Isles, And see the great Achilles, whom we knew. Though much is taken, much abides; and though We are not now that strength which in old days Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are; One equal temper of heroic hearts, Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield. —Alfred, Lord Tennyson (D J S HOMEROOM 113 Front Row: Russell, Bubenas, Javornik, Bartoer, Sharpies.
