At midnight a delicious steak dinner was served. The affair ended with the music “Some Enchanted Evening.” A view of some of the tables. GOLD IN THE HILLS OR “The Dead Sister's Secret by J. LAMP POST BUSINESS STAFF Vuken, Trzepla, Shepherd. “Meet That Deadline!” Informing students of school affairs was the main function of The Hi-Kearnian headed by John Shields, editor-in-chief. Readers of the Hike learned about honors and activities of their fellow students and teachers, new fashion trends, Student Council news, and sports events. “Sportlight” recognized two outstanding athletes in each issue. “In Your Opinion” and “Roving Reporter” gave students' reactions to the draft, Viet Nam, voting, and whether or not we need a new gym for basketball games. Editorials, “Hi-Notes,” “Low-Notes,” and clever drawings which caricatured important people in school completed the issues. Faculty adviser, Miss Evelyn Johnson, assisted the staff, and supervised the chaos in 334. Ronald Green, editor-in-chief of the Lamp Post, was assisted by his fourteen editors in publishing this year’s yearbook. The staff compiled information for each section, typed, worked on a theme, cover design, and layout. Selling yearbooks and getting ads was also a large responsibility. Two service projects were a drive for the new Boys’ Club in town and The Retarded Children’s Drive. In addition to the traditional football victory dances and the Thanksgiving and Christmas Dances, a Halloween costume dance and a computer dance were held. The annual magazine drive totaled $2578.60 in sales and the school’s profit was $855.24. Money raised from the Benefit Basketball game and by selling movie tickets was donated to the Student Loan Fund. This year’s Talent Show, Footlight Frolics,” was also a success. This year, at the suggestion of one of the members, the minutes from Student Council meetings were posted on the weekly activity sheets. Assisting Bob McCracken were Jan Summer, vice-president; Ray Wong, treasurer; Alice Kay and Lois Woodward, secretaries; Miss Marion Micchelli, sponsor; and the twelve other members. In the Fall, two representatives to Student Congress were elected from each homeroom. It was the duty of these congressmen to present opinions, suggestions, or problems of general concern, brought to them by fellow students, to the Congress president. He presented the topics to the Student Council at their weekly meetings. Miss Marion Micchelli, also sponsor of the Student Council, advised the Student Congress. Congressmen were in charge of the magazine drive, collected class dues, sold K-books and movie tickets, and read bulletins and activity sheets each morning in their homerooms. When elections were held, the Congressmen supervised the voting and collecting of ballots in their homerooms. JUNIOR STUDENT CONGRESS Front Row: Latini, Paknis, Gomes, McPherson. For the Thanksgiving game a Turkey Day Queen was chosen and crowned at the evening dance. “Show and Tell” Heading the Art and Advertising Committee of the Student Council was Roseann Santangelo. Her group made posters and flyers for dances and athletic games. During the Christmas season they decorated the main hall. “Leaders of the Pack” Big Brothers and Sisters, led by Robert McCracken, were assigned to freshmen homerooms. Football Under new head coach, Don Wernes, the Kard football team compiled a 4-4-1 record for the ’65 season. The team had a good season considering the lack of depth in the team. Co-captains for the year were Steve Burdulis and Tony Battaglino, and the first eleven were Bob Conn, left end; Phil Fash, left tackle; Frank Schachtele, left guard; Steve Burdulis, center; Chris Johnston, right guard; Tony Battaglino, right tackle; Terry Stuart, right end; John Mills, quarterback; Tony Trongone, halfback; Wayne Heinze, fullback; and Tom Schnauz, wing back. Steve Burdulis was selected to a first and second team All-State and first team Big Ten and Group 4. Soccer For the second straight year Kearny’s Booters won the Big Ten Championship and the championship of the “little three.” Coach Robert Kirk’s boys compiled a 10-2-2 slate. The Kards started out slowly with two losses but went undefeated for the rest of the season. Over-all Kearny scored 31 goals and gave up 11, while in Big Ten competition it was 16-2. Mickey Beard and Doug Robertson captained this year’s team. John Millar and Charlie McGinty were elected captains for next year. SOCCER Front Row: Mr. Kirk. Walter, Peyko, Wilson. Track Coach Tom Krulik’s Harriers proved themselves to be a real Cinderella” team when they came out of nowhere to win a sectional State title and place second in the Big Ten. The Kard’s record was 11-3. The Kards were a young team and this was supposed to be a rebuilding year. Ed Postel and Roy Wheat captained the squad through the season. Postel, however, was injured a good part of the season. Wrestling Under the new headcoach George Middleton, the Kard Grapplers tallied a 7-4-1 record for the season. In the state tournament, they tied for second place in the district competition. Six team members were in the finals. Co-Captain Gerry Farrell captured the 115 lb. class and Steve Burdulis regained his heavyweight title for a second year. Sid Blanchard, Jimmy Sharabba, co-captain Chris Johnston, and Don Gordon were all runners-up. Three boys reached the finals of the consolation tournament. Bill Clifford won on a forfeit, Jody Sharpies won and Barry Friend lost. Basketball Team Front Row: Frank, Moon, Parks, Beard. Back Row: Fix, Brateris, Stuart, Mcllroy. Basketball With a tremendous burst at the end of the season, the Kearny Cagers salvaged a respectable 7-11 record out of what could have been a disappointing season. Coach Bob Wynne, in his first year as coach, expected a rebuilding job with only one returning letterman. Once the Kards overcame early season injuries they won seven of their last ten games and their last four in a row. - h n m □ CLASS OF 1966 COMPLIMENTS OF Kearny Education Association INC.
