Football In its second season under Head Coach Charles Nelson the Kearny High School football team compiled a record of 2 wins, 4 losses, and 3 ties. The Kards, led by Co-captains Herb Finger and Robert Burdulis, were victorious against Orange and West Orange. Kearny lost to Emerson, Montclair, Bloomfield, and Irvington but played its last three games against Colombia, Belleville, and Nutley to draws. The team was noted for a fine line charge and exceptional defensive play. With thirteen returning lettermen, including next year’s Co-captains Henry Russo and John Norton, Kardinal rooters can look forward to a very successful season. Coach Nelson’s assistants were Mr. Leslie Zorge, Mr. Donald Dyke, Mr. Eugene Poplawski, Mr. William Madara, and Mr. Leo McGlynn. Football team in action. BASKETBALL Front Row: Confessore. Beard. While Kilcullen and Schilling handled most of the scoring chores, Richard Herford, Bob Sprague and sophomore Ralph Brateris controlled the backboards. Larry Fix and Harry Halpin also saw varsity action. The Kards hit their peak at mid-season, winning 10 straight before dropping the last game of season play to Montclair after clinching the Big Ten Championship. In the opening round of the State Tournament, Kearny avenged two earlier defeats to beat Montclair. The semi-final round of Group IV Section II Competition pitted the Kards against Morristown, who squeezed by with a 59-58 victory. Coach Conte was assisted by the J. V. coach, William Madara. The freshmen coach was Mr. Walter Dzuroska. Basketball team in action. BASEBALL Front Row: Gordon, Cacavella. Wells. Confessore, Sprague. Pisapia, Devito, Van Dorpe. Mr. Aulisi. Baseball Under the new guidance of Coach Joseph Aulisi, the outlook for this year’s baseball team is bright. Coach Aulisi is undertaking a complete rebuilding program to bring Kearny to the position it once held. Co-captains Bob Sprague and Richard Pisapia feel that the team has experience and most of all a spirit to motivate it to a fine season. While lacking depth, veterans like Sprague, Pisapia. Al Moleski, Walt Kilcullen. and Lou Confessore proved determining factors in this year’s season. Coach Aulisi and Co-captains Sprague and Pisapia. A panoramic view of the Kearny field. Soccer Compiling an impressive 10-1-2 record, the Kearny High soccer team reached the semifinal round of the State Tournament before losing by a score of 1 -0 to the State Champions, Trenton. Led by Co-captains Ian McKay and Jack Rodriguez, the team tallied 45 times while limiting their opponents to 13 scores during the season. Four boys received All-State Honors. They were Ian McKay, Mike Beard, Bob Cowan, and Malcolm MacPhail. Although starter McKay will be graduated, Coach Robert Kirk’s hopes are high for another fine season. Kearny’s Harriers Compiling a record of 8 wins and 2 defeats in duel competition, a first in the William L. Dickinson Tri-County Meet, and a third in the Hudson County Championships, the cross country team continued to keep Kearny a perennial power in New Jersey. As a result of an error on the part of the officials. Kearny’s exact finishing place in the State Meet could not be determined. Although the first seven boys, Captain William Kenworthy, Kevin Keim, John Sikora. Dave Warnquist, Ken Abraham, Richard Hyman, and Alan Kennedy will be graduated, the J.V. team went undefeated to keep hopes high for next season. The newly elected captain is Bob Carson. Wrestling on a junior varsity schedule, the Kards defeated North Bergen twice, Weehawken, and Bloomfield to register their wins. Coach Donald Dyke is confident that this building” year will bring Kearny into competition for honors when they compete on a varsity level next season. Only juniors, sophomores, and freshmen comprised the team this year and with another enthusiastic turnout next year, the Kards should have a winning season. Tennis With most of last year’s veterans returning, Coach Eugene Poplawski hoped to better the team’s record. Last year’s squad, which finished its season with a 12-5 slate, consisted of Cal Trevenen and Don Conn in singles, 12-5 and 16-1 respectively, while in doubles, Tom Fix and Juhanne Runne were 14-3. Alex Boyle, Ken Hawkins, Spencer Hipp, and Alan Schnoll were also racqueteers who saw action. TENNIS TEAM Front Rorr: Hipp, Boyle, Fix, Runne. Back Row: Keim, Trevenen, Conn. Hawkins.
