The squad, composed mainly of juniors, lost several close games, but always showed a never-say-die spirit. The experience they gained this year should manifest itself in a winning record next year. Seniors Bob Mant, a halfback, and Alain Ranwez, tackle, captained the team. Herb Finger and Bob Burdulis will assume this post next year. Soccer That old state tournament jinx once again struck the Kar-dinal booters. They registered a very successful winning season, only to lose a tie game in the tourney on a technicality. Seniors formed the basis of the squad, which was captained by Bob Brown and Jack Jolly. Brown was awarded All-State accolades at season’s end. Mr. Robert Kirk was once again the coach. Kearny has a proud soccer tradition and this year’s team was a credit to the school. 52 SOCCER TEAM Front Row: Brannigan. Docherty. McKay, Allyson, Rodriguez. Brown, Kennedy, Persson, Beard. Malles, Crawford. Back Row: Bedford, Dowd, Konrad, Lepansky, McKee, McCullen, Luben, Kaufman, Bennett, Douglass. Snyder. Coach Kirk. CROSS-COUNTRY Front Row: Sikora. Kenworthy, List, Leonard. Warnquist. Keim. Mr. Jardine. Back Row: Cifelli, Wansiewicz. Niedzinski, Hyman, Pollard. Bartkus, Jacobs, Warnquist, Wong, Tilly. Cross-Country Great success was enjoyed during the 1962-63 season by the Kardinal Harriers. They won most of their dual meets and made good showings in all open competition, winning the Hudson County Championship. Senior Tom Leonard was the individual star of the squad. Coach Jardine added to the impressive record that he has built up in his many years at Kearny. Many boys on the squad were underclassmen, who should be capable of more success in the following years. Track Kearny’s track team compiled an impressive record during the indoor season and looks for even more glory when the outdoor competition starts. The squad was paced by the two-mile relay team of Bob Mant, Ed List, Tom Leonard, and John Sikora; these boys placed first in the State Championships and won numerous other races, both as a group and as individuals. Mr. Thomas Krulik took over the coaching chores in the absence of Mr. Jardine and did a most creditable job. TRACK Front Row: Jolly, Hyman, Kerestan, Sussman. Tuttle. Warnquist, Kenworthy. Brateris, Sprague, Sprengel, Kilcullen, Herford, Halpin, Runne. Basketball Baseball A mid-season spurt, in which they won seven out of ten games, carried this year’s varsity cagers to a 7-10 slate. The team was paced by Walt Kilcullen, who averaged 18 points per game, and George Sprengel and Tom Schilling, each averaging 12. Sprengel and Joe Krajczewski were the lone seniors on the squad. Mr. Michael Conte finished his fifth year of coaching. The team’s flash of brilliance plus the return of three starters gives him ground for optimism in the future. A lack of returning letter-men, making it necessary to experiment with untried players at several positions, could possibly hurt the Kards on the diamond this year. Mr. Leo Mc-Glynn. the coach, has only captain Tony LaSpada, Walt Kilcullen. and Bob Sprague as proven performers. Other underclassmen have the talent, though, and if they bloom early, they could provide the impetus that would spark a winning season. If hustle and determination mean anything, the team already has two checks on the credit side. BASEBALL Front Row: Mr McGlynn. Wells. Pisapia. Nadrowski. Confessore. Pollard. Cacavella.
