' LISTEN TO THAT WONDERFUL MUSIC Football games, graduation, Spring Festival, and parades are activities at which the Kearny High Band may be heard playing. Under the direction of Mr. William Johnson, the band practices every fourth period. Members of the Orchestra can be heard tuning up during the sixth period under the guidance of Mr. William Johnson. This group plays at the Spring Festival, school plays, and concerts. Consisting of one hundred seventy-five voices, the K. H. Life in Spanish speaking countries has been the theme of the monthly meetings of the Spanish Club, sponsored by Miss Madeline Coleman. Holding their Christmas party in the traditional Spanish style, gave everyone a good time. Meeting in room 310, all Spanish students are eligible for membership. Offering culture as well as enjoyment is the French Club, sponsored by Miss Edith Cirle. Money obtained from dues is used to buy French records and a magazine published monthty in France. SEEN THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL Assisting teachers, mounting pictures, arranging bulletins, boards, and taking care of files are the jobs of the English Council. This group of girls is under the supervision of Miss Halverson. Seen in K. H. S. main hall during classes are the receptionists. These girls guide visitors to their destinations and are chosen by Miss Marion Tait. During the fall the 12B and 1 1A classes presented a play entitled “Our Hearts Were Young and Gay,” directed by Mrs. Delores Miller. These girls work during lunch period every day and are under the direction of Mrs. Perry. To give its members the various types of forensic work is the aim of the 01 in B. Slyvester Debating Society. These members enter various forums and contests and are coached by Miss Sarosa R. Melick. Members of the Stage Crew maintain various jobs. Among these are applying make-up, building the sets, painting, and attending to sound effects. Mrs. Delores Miller supervises the group. Every Friday after school, members of the Archery Club participate in tournaments and contests. Mrs. Elizabeth Earle sponsors the club which enables members to earn awards. OPPORTUNITIES UNLIMITED Under the leadership of Mrs. Elizabeth Earle the Tri-Hi-Y, formerly the Y-Teens, have planned many activities. Among these were a banquet, a fashion show, a senior party and a teacher’s tea. Keeping the library books in good condition and assisting pupils in their research work are two of the jobs the Library Council does under the supervision of Miss Clara Burghart. Decorating the school during holidays, graduation, and other special events is the Art Committee. Sponsor of this activity is Miss Colvin Henry. Character, serving, leadership and scholarship are the qualities needed to be eligible for membership in the National Honor Society sponsored by girl’s dean Miss Marion Tait. COACH ARGAUER ON THE GRIDIRON Co-captains Joe Papenberg and Neil Siciliano led this year’s football team through an even record of four wins and four losses. Mr. Arthur Argauer, football coach, has started his tenth season. Using a seemingly inexhaustible supply of energy in leading the student body in cheering at football and basketball games, this year’s cheerleaders have done an exceptional job. This group of twelve is led by Mr. Lawrence Jenkins. Plaid kilts are the traditional trademark of Kearny’s twirlers who perform at football games, pep rallies, and parades. With a team composed chiefly of sophomores and juniors, the basketball team won three of its seventeen games. Coach Charles Paglieri hopes for a better team with the aid of six returning lettermen. HIT THE DIRT Captained by Joe Mullins the Kearny Varsity track team won all of their nine interscholastic dual meets and placed second in both the Hudson County Championship and the New Jersey Championship. Coach Jardine made a separate schedule for the J. V.’s and the team had five wins and one loss. The indoor track team participated in the Millrose Games, Knights of Columbus, and the National International Scholastic meets. After winning two letters in a sport a boy is awarded an honor sweater by K.H.S. These sweaters are presented under the rules and regulations set forth by the school administration.
