FOOTBALL SEASON With their colorful outfits and clever routines, the twirlers were the main feature during the gridiron halftime at all the football games. This group is supervised by Miss Catherine Kil-lough and led by Harriet Parsons and Maryann Oblazney, majorettes. Under the supervision of Mr. Lawrence Jenkins, our peppy and enthusiastic cheerleaders led the cheers and songs at all the football and basketball games. It is their duty to encourage sportsmanship at all times. This years squad was led by Margaret Widmaier, captain. Coach Arthur Argauers team this year came through with a good record. They won six games, lost two, and tied one. The Kards played good, clean games, and played with all they had. Nutley had eight losses when Kearny went there, but when the Kards came back Nutley had nine. John Armitage was the only member of the squad to make all-state. SPORTS IN THE NEWS Kearny Highs basketball team finished the season with a record of four wins and six losses. This ’53-’54 season also marked the close of Mr. Ed Brehm’s coaching which was a valuable asset to the team. Kardinal sportsmanship and square playing abilities were predominant tnrough-the season. This years tennis team played fourteen matches, and entered the New Jersey State Tournament. The team this year was coached by Mr. Brehm, former basketball coach and assistant football coach. The team is headed by Charles Siede, who has been on the team for four years. All their games took place at the Arlington Players Club. There are nine members on the team. Only being defeated once, the Kardinal soccer team was unable to defeat the Jefferson High School Booters. Coach Fred Coggins led his boys to ten wins, four ties, and one loss. Leading the team were Richard Moroses and Peter Nolan. Next year, Coach Coggins will mark his twentieth year as soccer coach at Kearny High School. ON THE FIELD As usual, Mr. Harold Jardine, Kearny High’s cross country and track coach, turned out a terrific squad. The captain of the team was Joe Mullins. The team has won most of their games, and placed highly in the Hudson County Championship meet, and also ranked highly in the State Championship title. To become a wearer of the “K”, an athlete must participate in a majority of the games or meets during the season, and prove himself a capable performer in that particular sport. To win an honor sweater, two or more regular letters must be first earned. Kearny High School’s big nine captains were Ed Manthey, 12B, and Frank Bernardo, 11 A. This is the second year these same boys have been captains. The team is under the skillful coaching of “Doc” Leonard Lough-ridge, one of the best coaches in the state. “According as the man is, so must you humor him.
