One hundred and eighty members rolled up their sleeves and prepared to spend four work-filled years in the big building on the corner of King and Devon Streets. With Mrs. Alice Gaffney as our sponsor, we elected Tom Cali, president; Leonard Weinglass, vice president; Edith Luik, secretary; and Connie Spence, treasurer. In the beginning of our Sophomore year Miss Dorothy Roper became our sponsor, and helped us hold our first activity. It was in the form of an afternoon dance called “The Spring Frolic.” Doris Stralkus was president; Leonard Weinglass, vice president; Anne Woodland, secretary; and Connie Spence, treasurer. Finally we became sophisticated Juniors and in order to fill up our class treasury, sold Christmas cards and decorations. Tom Cali again won the election for class president, with Leonard Weinglass serving as vice president; Anne Woodland, Secretary; and Connie Spence, treasurer. Then came the big accomplishment! The class officers succeeded in getting the school library as the setting for the Prom. It was the first time in school history that this was done. The theme of the Prom, “Manhattan Serenade,” was most effective, as the library windows framed New York's skyline. We elected Tom Cali, president; Leonard Weinglass, vice president; Anne Woodland, secretary; and Phi Bohan, treasurer. Dancing in the Gym at the “Cupid’s Capers” dance was a highlight of the year, along with the Senior Farewell, Class Trip, and Graduation. Four years! Some hard, some long, but always our only high school days. MARY CARSON 12b class It was a dreary day when the January class of 1952 first entered the portals of Kearny High School in February, 1948; but the feeling of the class was in exact opposition to the weather. After meeting its sponsor, Mrs. Shoemaker, and Incoming acquainted with the characteristics of the school, the Freshman Class selected Albert Russo, president; Al Shulter, vice president; Beverly Averre, secretary; and William Beck, treasurer. This term was spent more in curiosity rather than in participation in activities. In the next term, the now proud Sophomore class presented, along with the other Sonnomore class, its first dance, “The Spring Frolic, held in one of the gyms. Officers elected during this year were: Janet Cronkright, Gail Heebner, Beverly Averre, and Doris Brand. In the following winter another dance, dubbed “The Sleigh-bell Swing,” was given. The Junior year proved to be the most exciting thus far, because, that May, the mid-year class held its Junior Prom. The officers, Sadie Thomson, Dolores Schulke, Barbara Bacis, and Janet Cronkright, along with the several dance committees, worked hard in order that the Prom, “Manhattan Serenade”, might be a success, and their efforts were indeed rewarded. That winter, the annual Christmas Card sales were conducted with the two Junior Classes combined. The Senior term was, beyond all doubt, the best of the four. It started in February, 1951, and the first activities were ordering class rings, taking pictures for the yearbook, electing Brian Hislop, Dolores Schulke, Tony Arcidiacona, and Janet Cronkright, officers, and presenting the class play, “Home Sweet Homicide , in which two members of the 12B Class—Joan Rutzler and Alex Karolyi— Participated. Among these events, a Senior dance called “Cupid’s Capers”, was held in the gym. There remained three activities that followed these: the Class Trip, Class Night, and the Senior Farewell, all of which proved to be meaningful, each in its own sense. The next step was graduation, and, upon marching up the aisles of Kearny High’s auditorium, the members of the January Class of 1952 carried with them many fond memories of the days spent in the building dedicated to those who seek knowledge.”
