Sponsored by the Music Depart- ment, Kearnys annual Winter Holiday Concert was a big success. It featured the musical work of five groups: A'Cappella Choir, String En- semble, Vocal lazz Ensemble, Girls Choir and The Barbershop Quartets. Most of the songs were Christmas car- ols although the String Ensemble did play some beautiful classical music. Many thanks go to Mr. Graeff and Mr. Norman, who with the groups gave an excellent and enjoyable show. l Music Department Sings Out the Year Members of the Female Barbershop quartet, Debbie Beard, Bobbi Engledow, Patricia Fraser and Cathie Qualin, sing '1l'Il Be Home For Christmas The Vocal lazz Ensemble does a bit of choreo- graphy as they sing Christmas Gift. ln a more serious number, the Vocal lazz En- semble sings Ring the Bells at Christmas . 20

On December 6th and 7th, Kearny High School Drama Department presented a play entitled Street Scene . Trying to recreate the slice-of-life realism of a New York City brownstone Apartment was a real chal- lenge, but the cast and crew did an excellent job. While the play was spiced with typical moment of everyday city life-gossiping neighbors, an eviction, young love, and a woman giving birth-it mainly re- volved around the Maurrant family. Unhappy in her marriage to Frank, Anna Maurrant began an affair with the milk collector Steve Sankey. Frank came home un- expectedly one day and found Steve in the Maurrant apartment with his wife. In a drunken rage, he killed them both and then ran off. A few hours later the police dragged him onstage where he said his final dramatic goodbye to his daughter, Rose. While most of the main parts were played by seniors, many talented sophomors and juniors joined the cast this year. Besides contributing to the huge success of Street Scene , they help insure future drama achieve- ments for Kearny. During a quiet moment in the play, Mrs. Emma lones and Mrs. Greta Fiorention gossip about Anna Maurrant's affair while Mr. Oleson looks on. .gg fi Lights, Camera, Action in the Streets Built by the stage crafts class and the cast and crew of Street Scene the beautifull desi n f Y 8 ' ed set stands empty.
