Randy Bruno drives back door for two, against Mt. Carmel. Kearny 76g Mt. Carmel 69 The Komets started out the 76-77 Basketball season with some heavy burdens. But following their opening 92- 61 rout of Poway. There seemed to be little doubt that they could handle it. To start out with, they were thrown into the tough new Eastern League with old eastern league power, Patrick Henry and their past rivals from Western League Madison High with high scoring Mitchell Lilly. To ado to that, they had the pressures of being defending C.I.F. champs. In addition during pre-season practice starting forward forward Gary Trousdale hyper-extended his knee and no one knew how long he'd be out. Then the season started, with Bill Bell still playing football, Steve Gardner started at forward, for Trousdale, and then things started going right. Bob Bartholomew was playing better than ever, many ranked him as the best player in the county. Gardner was playing ex- cellent. John Baumgardner at the other forward was also doing an exceptional job. The only untested quantity on the team were the guards, Randy Bruno and Jim Brownwood, they turned out to be more than was expected. Brown- wood, basically a defensive player was improving in every game. Randy Bruno, possibly the best ball handler playing high school ball became the teams playmaker, as well as excelling on defense, Bruno started on a path aimed for Alan Trammels' one year assist record. By breaking Alan's record for a single game, with 15 against Hoover. The Komets first big test was the Kiwanis Tournament, and they passed with flying colors defeating Mongomery, Grossment, third ranked Patrick Henry, and previously first ranked Helix. Jim Brownwood out-jumps an El Capitan forward for the rebound. John Baumgardner frustrates the Oiler center's attempted block and scores a basket. Sports 51
