Girls JV Basketball Shoots For The Win Girls J. V. Basketball had the form that would lead to a really good season. Playing a zone defense, the team was tight and tough to pass through. Their quick offense made them able to score. Usually starting in a game were, Laura Pephens, a junior, at center. Playing guards were sophomore Diane Dougherty and junior Kim Ankeney, with sophomores Lori Urbanek and Laura Tamkin in at forwards. Although she ran track last year, Laura Pephens, the tallest on J. V. was a good shooter and was usually there for the rebounds. Kim Ankeney, the only returning player, played well at either forward or guard. Her ability to shoot from the edge of the key and easy handling of the ball made her an asset to the team. G Pre-season play wasn't the greatest but with this team, Girls J. V. Basketball had a good season ahead of them. Laura Pephens attempts a steal on a rebound. Cross Country Unstoppable Under the skillful direction of Coach Rich Cota, Kearny Cross Coun- try compiled an impressive 8-l league record. The Komets, placing second in overall league standings, rolled up a se- cond place finish in the Aztec In- vitational and a fifth place in the South Bay Invitational. The dedicated runners averaged from eight to twelve miles an after- noon. Some of the runners managed to run an extra four miles during first period. Since Mr. Cota's arrival to Kearny in 1973, the cross country team has emerged from meager standings to C.I.F. contenders, which they have been for the past two years. Although there are only twenty- eight members on the team, less than in previous years, the overall quality has improved greatly. The varsity team, with seniors Alan Blair, Bob Fraser, and Jorge Quiroz, promises to be ex- ceptionally strong next year, with the return of juniors Ricardo Perez, Mark Focareta, Bill Clabby, Jeff Hagewood, and sophomore Dan Ponce. Ricky Perez, the team's most out- standing runner, has consistently finished first in league and non-league competition. As a sophomore, he ran a 4: 19.2 mile and led the CC'ers to a 9-0 league record. Karl Kimmey tried in vain to catch the fleeting Ron Beck. To Art Deich, endurance was the key to victory Sports 47
