36 Sports Talented Komets Join astern League Thrown into a tough new Eastern League, the 1976 Football Season looked to be and was a tough battle for the Komets, but Kearny answered the call with one of the most talented teams in the county. The Komet backfield is overflowing with talent. Starting at Quarterback Kearny has one of the finest returning QB's in the county in Jimbo Harris. Backing up Harris is Tui Peleti another highly talented QB. At the fullback slot Kearny answers with Scott Holland, who last year was well on his way to a 1,000 yard season when he was sidelined with a leg injury. At halfback the Komets have two returning senior lettermen in Eddie Sanchez and Kenny Mini Mac Matheson. Speedy Sanchez is a game breaker. Any time Eddie gets around end he's a threat to score. Matheson on the other hand is a utility man who can run effectively inside and out. With three talented backs like Eddie, Kenny, and Scott most teams would be satisfied, not Kearny. The Komets add skilled backs Tony Ford, Stan Jeep', Holmes, and offen- sefdefense man Paul Berg to make it one of the most potent backfields in the county. The Komets don't lack pass receivers either, with Bill Bell, possibly the best tight end in the county, and wide receiver Mike Ellis' sure hands and swift feet, give the Komets an extremely potent pass offense. One of the keys to a good running or passing offense is the offensive line, and Kearny has one of the best. Starting with '75 All Western League Center Tim Ellis, the line is tough at every position. The offensive line is a bunch of guys who do most of the work and Ricky Spencer picks of a pass on the first play of the game against Madisong Kearny 27, Madison get little of the glory. But everytime a pass is completed or there's a good run it's the offensive line which provides the protection or opens the holes, and Kearny knows how to do both. All returning Senior Lettermen, the O-Line consists of LT Charlie Hanna, LG Chuck Bradford, C Tim Ellis, RG Joe Najera, RT Clint Helenihi. To compliment the offensive line Kearny has an excellent defensive line and secondary. They are as follows: DE Nathan Cross, DT Luis Mota, NG Joe Najera, DT John Beam, DE Benny Dents, LB Paul Berg, LB Jimmie Phillips, LB Wayne Cross, and pass defenders: Mark Anderson, Ricky Spencer, Mike Ellis, and Melvin Shelly. With this talented bunch the Eastern League better watch out for its new arrival. W s ' 5 1 Bell contemplates on the sidelines during the Madison game. Scott Holland, Stan Jeep Holmes, and Joe Najera provide protection as Jimbo Harris lofts a pass downfield.
