During the early years of Kearny, Linda Vista was still being c-onstructed and the living rooms ot many private homes served as classrooms. ln I943, the Kearny Student Body, with its principal, Mr. Taylor, was transferred to the site we now know as Montgomery Junior High. Ten years later, a beautiful new high schoolwas completed and our second principal, Mr. Carr, along with the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students moved to our present and perma- nent location on Kearny Mesa. Many fine additions have come with the past six years, including our fine principal, Mr. Davies, and a large new auditorium and gym. Last tall Kearny played host to tive hundred Clairemont Sopho- mores, making the tenth grade class the largest in the city, and increasing the campus population to approximately l400. Just before Thanksgiving, the Clairemont students lett. As always, the year has passed quickly and now Kearny will graduate the 'Fine class of I959. Rushing to beat the bell between classes on a chilly day . . . relaxing tor lunch in the warm, sunny patio . . . the peace and quiet of a lonely library - this is Kearny. 4 Administration ssss ... , I ' I5 Seniors A ... ,... ... We chose space for the theme at the beginning -of the school year because we thought that it tied in nicely with the name ot the book, Komet. As the months passed, our theme became more and more timely: New satellites took their place in space, and several mo-onshots missed their mark. The scientists respon- sible for these wonders have a strong adventurous type-the spirit of the students of Kearny High type-the spirit of the students of Kearny High School. 5 Principal I wish that I could thanlc all of you individually Mr. Cleon Davies Mr. Davies, the principal of Kearny High School is a very go-od-humored man. Although he is seldom seen without a smile, Mr. Davies is not as care- free as his appearance suggests. His position, as executive on campus, is one of responsibility which demands competence and patience. For this reason, we, the Komets of Kearny, are proud of our principal and the splendid way in which he has fulfilled this job. for the many ways in which you have helped to make Kearny a better school. Since I can't do this, I will just extend a simple thank-you and wish all of you the best of Iuclc and success for your future. Cleon Davies 6 Mrs. Karen Wiseman Known and respected by all students abid- ing on the Kearny campus, is the girls' Vice-Principal, Mrs. Karen Wiseman. Not only does she sponsor Dianas, set up the school calendar, and lceep actions running smoothly, but also spends many hours solv- ing personal problems for the girls. ln fulfilling these demands with competence and quality, Mrs. Wiseman has not only won the friendship and admiration of all who lcnow her, but also, the sincere thanks and gratitude for three successful years at Kearny from the l959 graduating class. Mr. John Brose Mr. John Grose, our boys' Vice-Principal, must set an example for all male Komets. Aside from seeing that school regulations arc obeyed, and handling, difficult situa- tions which arise during the year, he is the manager and organizer of all sports and affiliated activities. A most competent man, Mr. Brose was able to fulfill his job while at the same time, gain respect and friendship of Kearny students. 7 L special recognition Mr. Paul Deacon United States History is the specialty of Mr. Paul Deacon, and he has made it come alive for hundreds of Juniors. By means of his unique and interesting teaching meth-ods, he helps the students understand and appreciate our American heritage. He has visited many of the historic shrines discussed in class and he shares his personal enjoyment of them with his students. ln addition, Mr. Deacon has become Co-ach Deacon to the many boys he has trained on the athletic teams in the past. Paul Deacon has contributed much to the friendly spirit ot Kearny High School. dedication Twelve years ago, a certain new teacher came to Kearny. Ordinarily, the arrival of a new teacher is a common event. But it did not take long 'forthe kids -as he called the students-to discover that he was more than a teacher. He was a sincere friend and possessed uncommon understanding and a warm sense of humor. This man had become almost legendary-it was he that the entering Sophs heard of 'First and it was he also who the Alumni sought out when they returned tor a visit. Now there is nothing but the legend and the memory, for in mid-year he left to help establish a new high school. The legend is not wrong, tor even in memory, Mr. Leonard Fierro is the biggest little man at Kearny. Mr. Leonard Fierro 9 Kearny faculty Mrs. Nancy Arney BA. Long Beach State Drill Units-P.E. I 8 Mary Lee Hogan The highest scholastic record in the Senior Class was achieved by Ed Dickson, who maintained straight A's throughout his high school career. Always an active member of 'C.S.F. he served as its vice-president in the spring of '58 and both semesters of his senior year and he recived a life mem- bership in the organization. Due to his avid interest in science and active participation in Bf-Chem- Phy another honor came to him when he was elected president of the club in his junior year. His greatest achievement was demon- strated through his untiring efforts to produce the '59 KOMET. As' the able Editor-in-Chief of our yearbook, Ed Dickson deserves our highest commendation. Canadian born Mary Lee Hogan, highest ranking member of Who's Who, is considered one of the most dependable students at Kearny. Quietly industrious, she , has made innumerable contribu- tions to our school in time, effort and accomplishment by complet- ing admirably each job she un- dertakes. Serving as president of C.S.F. tor both semesters of her senior year, she has also earned her life r membership pin. Interested in many school activities, she served well as 'Copy Editor of the Annual' I and as a member of the Dianas, . Quill and Scroll, K.D.K. Council, E and A.S.B. Her hobbies encom- pass swimming, bowling, and read- ing Shakespeare. A sincere and gracious girl, 'Mary Lee plans to enter the 'Field of medicine and become a Physical Therapist. Edward Dickson the faculty and administration of Kearny High School on the basis Coming to Kearny in his junior year, Curt Fischer is one of the most talented artists ever to at- tend our school. This artistically endowed student received two art awards before he arrived on our campus and has since been rec- ognized for his outstanding worlx in the Kearny Art Department. Majoring in English as well as art, he displayed an interest in creative writing and submitted manuscripts to our literary maga- zine, Scribblers Frolic, and served in many useful capacities as a member of Quill and Scroll. During the election campaigns in the spring of '58 the entire student body's attention was sud- denly focused upon 'Curt Fischer. Swept to victory, he served as an efficient, courteous, and responsi- ble A.S.B. President, presiding ef- fectively throughout the year at all student body functions. Sparkling with personality and bubbling with school spirit, Betty Truett has been engrossed in numerous school activities. ln her sophomore year she was a mem- ber of the Pom Pon 'Corps and served as Sophomore Representa- tive to the Girls' League and as secretary of Mixed Chorus. The following year she continued her leadership by becoming a song- leader and Jr. Business Editor of the Annual. She also remained on the Girls' League Council. In ad- dition to earning a life member- ship in 1C.S.F. in her senior year, this capable and industrious girl was our Head Songleader, Girls' League President, and Business Editor of the Annual. Socially, Betty graced our school as Queen of the R.O.T.'C. Ball and Homecoming attendant, and culminated her role in Job's Daughters as Sr. Princess and Honored Queen. Curt Fischer Betty Truett Michael Lennon Peppy and full of ambition, our Senior Class Vice-President, Mike Lennon, exhibited a keen interest in school affairs. Since his ap- pointment to the Junior Colne Committee, his boundless enthu- siasm for class activities has been displayed by his worlt on the 'Cap and Gown 'Committee and the Senior Council. This year he was elected president of Bi-'Chem-Phy, a club offering an outlet for his continued interest in math and science. Most of Milte's free time has been devoted to the duties re- quired of the president of the San Diego Achievers Association. Chosen Junior Achiever of the Year for the San Diego Area, his honors included a trip to a national convention as well as television appearances. This game was highlighted by brilliant defensive play. Wet weather at La Jolla helped the Mission Bay Bucs to overcome Kearny I2-b. Kearny rallied against the favored Hornets of Lincoln to win an I8-I3 victory. Unsurpassed passing displayed by Kearny kayoed Hoo- ver 34-25. ln the inaugural battle with the Crawford Colts, the inspired Kearny eleven fought hard and won 27-0. For Kearny's Homecoming, the fighting Komets held their own for awhile against St. Augustine but later the Komets had I9 points scored against them to make the tally 33-I3. Kearny spoiled Point Loma's Homecoming game by handing them the short end of a 20-7 tussle.
