After arriving in Linda Vista by air, I was taken by taxi to the school and, much to my amazement, I discovered it was driven by Le- burne Farr. While I was walking around pondering the question of where to go? an old relic of a hot rod caught my eye making its way toward me. Inside it was a blonde woman, Nola Lindgreen, happily married to Ted McFadden. They agreed to show me all my old friends if I would consent to spend my vacation with them. They took me up the marble steps of Kearny and we both were very lucky to find ourselves in time to experience the first of Mr. Taylor's latest inventions, a sort of push- button 'idea that would force happenings twenty years hence. At the first push of the button we found Betty Ruth Moyes going on her nineteenth year of nursing. We found her deep interest standing by' her side, Cecil Polsley, her real reason for purposely flunking eighteen con- secutive exams. The scene changed to a large broadcasting company in the West. Carmelita Ratcliffe started telling of her campaign with Station W I N D and was now broadcasting as Mrs, Voice of Experience. I-ler patient husband, Bob Montero, was working by her side making necessary sound effects. The scene shifted across the ocean. ln the heart of some unexplored uninhabited foreign country we found Shirley Roe. She had emi- grated and become a missionary. Just as we recovered from the shock of hav- ing Shirley as a missionary, we found Bill Na- pier busily Iabcrirrg on his civil engineering job. Busy directing him was Roy Brunner, boss of this most important job. We were amazed to see on the screen a large hospital in Chicago, Illinois. There we saw Dr. Clifton Dellis and his patient nurse, Cora Smith. Off in the corner, Ollie Jo Jones sat reading a modern book entitled Home Economics. She didn't quite understand what it was all about. Mr. Taylor touched the button once more and the scene again changed. We saw a large ranch come into view. Coming out of the door was Avis Kirby, now owner of not only this but four other ranches with Barbara Ko- ronis and Edna Belle Terry as her willing help- ers. Colder than all icebergs was the 'next view. Russell Casteel was all-skating star, and as runner-up to take second place, we found So- phia Vitek. The next scene changed Mr. Taylor's posi- tion at Kearny and he had given up his place as principal to noise other than Phil Dillon. Snap :vent the next picture and mercy what we saw next! Low and behold what do we see but John Peacock having a quarrel with his girl and pursuing Wilda Morris with flattery. But, the next view was really surprising, it was our old crooner, Ralph Estrada, of our Senior class. I-le is now crooner for the Bet- ter Babies program over station W. O. L. F. Before we had time to laugh this off, it gave us the future of Mary Nadeau. She had be- come a salespwsman, and had undertaken the task of selling men's clothes for a shop run by Bonnie Eubank. 1.31.- Then it shifted again and we found Frances Fassler sitting in the front room of her home. She was now married to Ensign Buster Calvert and had seven girls, the oldest one playing in the Boston Symphony. After the picture changed this time, Wil- bert Smith seemed to be doing some super work driving the bus from Linda Vista to Lo Jolla. When we were through following Wilbert on the bus, we visited the now celebrated per- son, Jean Branson. The efficient private sec- retary for General Motors had, indeed, made use of her economics. She had won world re- nown as the largest sit-down striker on record. After nineteen years, she was still sitting down. We were still shocked when there appeared a beautiful sweet-looking, slim girl, and none other than Doreen Frogette. We were even more surprised when we found out she had stolen the Hot Steps from Ginger Rogers. Accustomed as we were by this time to sur- prises, we all looked up with a gasp as James May, the pride of our class, .had become the pride of Kearny and had taken Mr. Miller's place as custodian. Now we see ourselves face to face with D. C. Reed, who is now city manager, and his faithful secretary, Mary Ruth Boggs, the one time absence slip collector lwhen we were still going to dear old Kearnyl . Even though bleach fades hair we still rec- ognized Pat Thorp as head cashier at a Safe- way store. You'd almost think we were going to visit the movie by the looks of this next picture, be- cause there standing in line for tickets was Bob Farrington waiting to purchase tickets for his wife, Dot Arnold, and their three children. The people starring in this picture were none other than Ronald Harvey in the leading roll and Madge Anderson second place. Jim- mie Hunt played the part of Madge Ander- son's father. They had already produced four previous pictures in Hollywood. We were not at all surprised to find that in this next picture Wanda Fortner had top hon- ors as number one trumpet player of the world. Mr. Ortiz claimed most credit for this triumph. Mr, Taylor now stated that this was all the film he had for this project, but he could eas- ily show us the other invention he had fixed, but we would have to wart until tomorrow to be shown this. We agreed to leave, promising to return the next day. I was then escorted to the home of Afton Wood Fischer and was served a very delicious supper and was busy all evening lis- tening to the experiences of some of my old schoolmates who had so reluctantly disappear- ed during the last twenty years. After having a very nice sleep and a most delicious breakfast to start my day off right, Afton and I headed back to learn more in de- tail the future of the rest of my friends. We were surprised to find as general secretary Glenna Homes, and even more surprised to find Pauline Ray as dean of Kearny. Mr, Smith was still filling the place as vice prin- cipal. But soon we were off to see more of Mr. Taylor's most enchanting inventions. Wim ' -3 2- 4 5-ill 0 ox novembex Qg hvol g.l. I you hillbillg h i 'X . Few realize the obstacles he has had to overcome during this period. With the coming of the football season, came lack of equipment. Despite this he has carried on, borrowing football suits and other neces- sary equipment from other schools. Then came basket- ball with no place to practice. This obstacle was offset by securing permission to use the Linda Vista Commun-- ity Gym. But alas, then came track with no track to practice on. Again, however, as before, he forged ahead, constructing a makeshift track for workouts while he sent out a plea to have a regular track and football field built. Both of them are now under construction and the boys at Kearny may look forward to many successful athletic seasons to come under the able guidance of Coach Smith. Coach Claude T. Burns, formerly of Wichita, Kansas, has been on the Kearny coaching staff for the last two years. Dur- ing this time his teams have blazed a trail of victories. Coach- ing both championship C and D basketball teams and wrestling teams which won a total of 4 out of 5 dual meets, and also a total of 22 medals in C.l.F. and county Champion- ship wrestling meets, his efforts have been to build up boys to give them an equal chance against other competitioln in high school athletics. N35 sv .s ,xxx Coach Al Lambert, track coach of Kearny, and former head track and football coach at Pt. Loma, is from Nebraska. He coached a champion football and baseball team at Fresno and at Pt. Loma, had divisional champs in the hurdles, 4:40, and a record of l2'9 in pole vault. With good sportsmanship, he recommends seasonal hours, wholesome eating, no smok- ing or drinking. Coach Lambert is working hard on athletics and is looking forward to the future for bigger and better teams, encouraging all boys interested to participate. in-.-- VLA 5. V ,J , , , . H 1 I Football Summary The starting of Kearny's first football team this year opened another major sport season for the school. Although there were many handicaps, great spirit was shown by the student body and boys on the team to make a foundation for a football team next year and years to come. Overcoming the shortage of equipment, Coach Smith borrowed pants from other schools and, with the much needed help of sewing classes, was able to have 50 boys in suits. Another big problem was the lack of a football field, but provided with a temporary field and the backing of the school spirit put out by the student body, the Komets were able to win 2 out of 7 games played in the league. The biggest disadvantage suffered by the team was the lack of experience. Although most of the opponents outweighed and exceeded in height our players, the Komets showed very good sports- manship and played good football with the disadvantages and handicaps against them. Through the skillful work of Coaches Darrell Smith and Algy Lambert, Kearny has made its foundation for foot- ball. With many of the boys coming back next year, the future looks good for Kearny's second foot- ball team. From the 60 boys out for football, l8 received letters. They were as follows: Layne Anderson, Don Bird, Cliff Borrows, Buster Calvert, Earl Donner, Hector Estevane, George Gorton, John Monroe, Pat Helms, Bill Herrick, Don Key, Dale Paape, John Peacock, Dick Pedrin, Bert Rogers, Francis Stills, David Trammel, Dale Webb, Managers: Bill Napier, Dick Quinley. . , , ,. ..... ,,,., ., .. ., ...,,-.-M-.F ,. . l tfliarterlmaclcg Cliff liortows, lulllmzxclcg llill llerrick, loft cull: llwziclc lii Dick Rose l'at llclms, left lialflmack, and johnny l'L-zu-ack, right lizilflmack. licar11y'sliziclillulclziiitli-11tls,lclt to right: Toni Sli-in, right ciiclllliclx Ro 1 Football Schedule I KEARNY scones OPPONENTS I9 Kearny ...... Varsity Basketball Summary Going into its second year of Victory League competition Kearny started Basketball with several major handicaps, the main one being the lack of returning Iettermen upon whom to base a team, another being the inexperience ot the new team. Pushing ahead with his raw recruits, Coach Smith provided the necessary training to overcome these handicaps. Although the season was not very suc- cessful as far as winning games were concerned, good sportsmanship was shown and a ground floor was laid for next year's Varsity squad. Players upon whom Kearny can plan a successful team next year are Gene Langford, right guard, who was one of the season's high point men, and Guy Walker, center, who will probably be a good pivot man for the team. Other prospects are Orval Simpson, Pat Helms, and Don Bird. Seniors who have played for Kearny for the last time are Bob Wiest, captain, Hector Estevane, Dave Trammel, and George Gorton. At the basketball banquet, Captain Bob Wiest repeated an old saying, When the great man comes to write about your name, he writes not whether you won or lost but how you played the game. if .yang :os who Mi M M 4 lawn VWKQWW -3 0... Varsity Team This year a new high in clean sportsmanship was established at Kearny by the B squad. Co-Cap- tains Allyn Wilson and Joe Alford led the team through many a game decided by a mere hair's breadth of luck. Although many of their games were lost, the B squad never failed to afford excitement to the fans or an excellent exhibition of clean basketball. In order to know this team as it really is, you first have to know its members. Boys like- Allyn Wilson: Slow, sure, precise accuracy is Allyn's style. Dick Peterson: Plays a fast, topsy-turvy kind of basketball. Dean Stolte: Muscular, aggressive, with a strong desire to win, Ronald Harvey: Steady, dependable, in even the hottest sports. Don Chapman: Has a knack for snatching passes from opponents. Frank Trailer: Cool, unlikely to run wild in a tight spot. Leland Baker: Fast, startling ability to steal the ball from opponents. Joe Alford: Smooth handling of the ball, dependable, plays a clean and interesting game. These boys lettered. Those not quite so fortunate, yet active members of the same team were- Don Baily, guard, Dick Grove, guard, Johnny Evans, center, Don Turley, forward, Fred Williams, forward, Bill Koch, guard, and C. B. White, guard. These are the boys, and well known are the upsets a'nd heartbreaks they brought into Victory League competition this year. To finish the season, the B team took to the road and, winning from Army and Navy Academy, Vista, and Ramona, they took a championship trophy in the Escondido Invitational Tournament at Escondido. This team extends grateful thanks to Coach O Chessman for his guidance, to James Carroll for his V efficient management, and to the entire student body for its whole-hearted support. Games won were Grossmont 2, Pt. Loma, Encinitas, San Dieguito, and St. Augustine. They lost to Coronado and La Jolla. Seventh Grade Basketball Summary This year, with the annex still separated from the main building, gave little hope of participation in competitive basketball for the seventh graders. However, the enthusiasm was stronger than imagined and four teams of boys requested permission to have a basketball tournament. These four teams played a double round in the Community Building gym over a period of three weeks. The total number ot boys participating in this contest was over 25 and each team seemed to try as hard as the next for winners. The outcome displayed a team that was undefeated in both rounds. They chose the name of 'Flectors' lmeaning tlashl and under their own ihitiative dyed some uniforms and played good organized ball throughout the tournament. The picture of the winning team is shown here with the hope ot encouraging more of our junior high boys to start early in their preparation for competitive sports. John Holcombe also played part ofthe time with this team, but his picture is not included. The other boys are Darrell Bullard, Lee Kirkpatrick, James Kirby, Jimmy Adcox, with Jimmy Denton and Jerry Douglass as co-captains. -53- Wrestling Summary Coach Burns' wrestlers had a very successful season this year, winning all dual meets but one, and capturing twenty medals. They beat El Centro, Whittier, Sherman Institute at Riverside, and Holtville. Some of the outstanding boys were Atkins with a second and third place and Almond with a second and third, both in lO3 lb. class, Gauder with a third and two second places in the 133 lb. class, Robinson with the San Diego County Championship in the 109 lb. class, and Hall with two fourth places in ll2 lb. class. With- out the aid of adequate track facilities to work with, they started with a rough-shod homemade track to put the boys in shape. Working tirelessly with the boys every day, they gradually began to get results. Great emphasis is placed on clean sportsmanship and clean habits. Again, as be- fore, Kearny may not win many track meets, but the base will be laid on which Kearny will not be the underdog but one of the leading teams in the Victory League. 1945 VICTORY LEAGUE TRACK SCHEDULE March 9: Hoover Relays at Hoover.
