Coach Gail Sterling says of girls' softball: Where else could you see a girl slide into a 'safe call, ' rise, covered with mud , and then remove her helmet to fix her hair?' ' The Titan girls had the skill and the know- how , but many players were new to the team, or had very little experience playing in games. Star of this year's team was senior Donna Troupe. She regu- larly played 3rd base , but could take over any other position, including pitcher. She led the team in sto- len bases with a total of 21. But Donna is mainly recognized for her bunting. She could bunt herself on base whenever called upon to do so. One other outstanding player was Mary Jimenez, a freshman shortstop. Mary could also play 3rd base, and had a 450 batting average, the team's highest. She is a great hope for the future. Second in batting average was sophomore Jean Arlotta, with a 435. Mary Jimenez led in RBI's 6133. Junior Cheryl Paris was second with 11, and Jean Arlotta, third, with 10. Leader in home runs was again Mary Jimenez, with two to her record. Oliger And Merkel Lead FRONT: Sue Bozza, Valerie Oliger. Jean McGaheran. STANDING: Terry Merkel, Sue Merkel, Coach Bruce Nissen- baum, Pat Kendall, Stacey Travis. Following their 18-9 season, the Titan girls' bowling team went on to finish 3rd in the Shore Conference Northern Division, with a 2101 score t.hat had them finishing 11th out of 48 schools. Val Oliger led the girls by bowling a 504 series, and winning 8th place honors in the individual standings The girls defeated eventual Division win- ner Raritan as Sue Merkel C1753 and Terry Merkel C1737 led a 742-676 win against Rar- itan, which broke Raritan's 12-game win- ning streak. But in game two, the Titans lost to Raritan by 24 points. In the match against Shore, Valerie Oli- ger made game points of 212-156-185 for a 553 series, a new team record. The girls, who will all be returning next season, will most likely bowl their way to Shore Conference honors in '75-'76 . Terry Merkel shows form that eamed her a place in Coach Bnice Nissenbaum demonstrates how it's the 2nd team of the Asbury Park Press' All-Shore done . Girls' Bowling Team .
