The Faculty members help to carry out these objectives in that all the courses in the Science Department are laboratory ori- ented . The important curriculum change that has taken place in science classes is that they have moved from teacher learning to student learning. The Computer Terminal Career Education is the new teaching aide that has been incorporated into the department. The teachers commented that student participa- tion seemed to have been stimulated by lab- oratory experiments and the teachers' inter- est in the student and in their work. d ff'- WS wmmmfmz' .Q .Q , .J E l eeee xel ?, ix E N ,K vii N in W 'Ze Mr. Bruce Nissenbaum Mr. Walter Mewes Mr. James Luzier Mr. Ray Coleman Mr. Robert Strickhan Mr. William VanDeventer Future Construction Workers M F 29 Ex tt l,it A 15 Qtzl 'o Z W r rancil-1' ' t ?'bo ioo Stewa K' g V The Industrial Arts Department offers three basic courses to the students . This year, like last, the Titans produced a win- ning team . Voted into the top ten by local papers we were the second defensive team in all of Middlesex and northern Monmouth County. These honors were earned by an offense that averaged 18.3 points per game. We also had the help of some very special players: George Boyce , a senior fullback, racked up 55 points for the season, averaging 4. 1 yards per rush. Carrying the ball 91 times, George gained a total of 373 yards. Joe Jimenez, a soph halfback, earned 46 points for the season. He ran the ball 82 times, for 428 yards, and he received '76 passes for 166 more yards. Dan Crane, a senior tight end, scored 26 points for the season, and as second leading receiver in Mon- mouth and Ocean counties, Dan caught 29 passes, for a total of 412 yards. Bob Sullivan, our senior quarterback, averaged 6 5 . 9 yards per carry, carrying the ball a total of 384 yards. The Titans also produced some All County players, George Boyce and Dan Crane making the second team, and Bobby Sullivan, on the third team, was also voted offensive player of the year. Receiving Honorable mention were Tim O'Brien, winner of the Vince Lombardi Award for outstanding linemen , Jim Robertelli and Joe Jimenez . 'Yi' IV Coach Norma Kaes Though the girls' varsity basketball team did not win many games this year, the dedication and drive of the girls made for a very spirited team . The senior starters consisted of center Donna Troupe. forwards Dawn Troupe and Cheryl West, and guards Rhonda Pechillo and Cookie Sheppard. The junior starters were Sharon Watson, forward, and Debbie LaBone, guard. Top scorers were Donna Troupe and Cheryl West, who scored their highest games against I-Iolmdel and Henry Hudson. Both these seniors played basketball all four years of high school. During these years they improved a great deal and always gave an impressive performance . Iunior Sharon Watson was another high scorer for the Titan girls, and scored her highest game at the Freehold Twp. and Holmdel games. She is a good shooter and a hope for the future . Coach lane Pukstas had notl1ing but praise for every girl , and if they continue to improve , the team should have a fine season in 1976. ABOVE LEFT: Cheryl West practices her layups. ' The Titan girls had the skill and the know- how , but many players were new to the team, or had very little experience playing in games. Star of this year's team was senior Donna Troupe. She regu- larly played 3rd base , but could take over any other position, including pitcher. She led the team in sto- len bases with a total of 21. But Donna is mainly recognized for her bunting. She could bunt herself on base whenever called upon to do so. One other outstanding player was Mary Jimenez, a freshman shortstop. Mary could also play 3rd base, and had a 450 batting average, the team's highest. She is a great hope for the future. Second in batting average was sophomore Jean Arlotta, with a 435. Mary Jimenez led in RBI's 6133. Junior Cheryl Paris was second with 11, and Jean Arlotta, third, with 10. Leader in home runs was again Mary Jimenez, with two to her record. Forty-two students, boys and girls, tried out this year. Eleven players were chosen. Senior Aris Alafouzos was the number one singles player. He was always put in against the opposing team's best player, but he played very well against the tough competition. A promise for the future is junior Brian O'Connor. He was the most improved player, and won the most singles matches 175. Seniors Jim Robertelli and Tim O'Brien were best known for their playing together in dou- bles. They were inseparable on the court. Jim and Tim won two clutch matches. Coach Lopes' opinion of the team was that they improved as the season progressed . Most players had never played tennis before . But the interest and enthusiasm were excellent, as was their sportsmanship , especially when they were the underdog. The Student Council, under the advisorship of Mr. William Trzaska , is whatever the student body is willing to make it. Like so many other activities, it needs the active support of the student body to stay alive . Among its more interesting accomplishments, the Student Council, two years ago, brought about a change in the dress code. The Council was instrumental in bringing about an exemption from final exams for students with B averages. Just this brief look at their accomplish- ments should prove that with the support of the student body, it is, in fact, an effective voice for the students. It can get things done . Something is happen- ing at K.H.S. There is a little club that seems to be getting bigger. The members don't have contests with other teams, they don't per- form, not as members of the club, that is. But they do perform. And this performance goes on year round, at home, in school. The club is the National Honor Society, and its members have performed so well in the academic areas that they are entitled to member- ship in this national organization. These stu- dents understand their task in school is to learn. These people have been outstanding in pursuing their educa- tion. They deserve our congratulations . H5 FIRST ROW: B. Curivan, S. It was a frantic drive, but with the leadership shown by Darlene Boehler, Editor-in-Chief , a dynamic staff never lost their drive . Joan and Judy Brown are typi- cal of the many underclass- men who were always willing to do whatever they were asked. Jean McGaheran and Jean Arlotta have really developed into hardworking, skillful photographers and all of the section editors found willing help from the seventh graders to the Juniors. The tidal wave of Oceanus crashed upon the shores of Keans- burg , but because of an apparent lack of student interest and an obvious lack of student support, the tide has ebbed. In spite of growing money worries, Editor- in-Chief Alex Figueroa , with her shrinking staff, did manage to get out issues of the school paper. And the newspaper was certainly something that deserved more support than it received. But this first step has been taken, and Advisors Mr. Waldron and Mr. Nissenbaum are optimistic about the future of Oceanus. These dedicated francophiles meet under the direction of Mr. John Galligan. and drink deeply from the rich cul- tural heritage of France. This club offers a student not only the oppor- tunity to improve their skills in the French language , but it widens the cultural horizons of the Keansburg student. Viva La France. A fairly new and quite popular club at KHS is the Ski Club. Under the direction of Mr. Murray and Miss Kaes, the Ski Club provides students with an opportunity to travel to local ski resorts and develop or polish their skill in this fast growing sport. The club has traveled to Great Gorge and Vernon Valley this year, where students were suddenly transformed into Downhill Racers, hoping to reach the bottom of the slope intact. One of the most successful clubs this year has been the photography club, under the direction of Mr. I . Peter Hughes. The yearbook staff alone is deeply grateful to Mr. Hughes and to Ray Keffer for their tireless and gener ous help. A fully equipped darkroom is made available to students, allowing them to develop their developing skills. Things are expected to turn out even better next year. 119 The purpose of the Nurse's Club is to acquaint students with careers in health fields, and to promote information useful in health needs. To learn everything they could in this science related club, spe- cial trips were planned to River- view Hospital, and Monmouth County Blood Bank, King James Nursing Home , and Patterson Army Hospital. Guest speakers were invited who were authori- ties in various health related fields. All of the students who were associated with this club gained the experience of dealing with the people on a person to person basis daily. One member, senior Diane Crowl, decided to further her education after graduation by studying to become a nurse. Another club that is eagerly recognized is the teachers' aides. They also give up their free time in an effort to take some of the paper work from the teachers, therefore giving them more time to teach their classes and to prepare the next day's les- sons. Some of their duties are tedious, like marking and recording homework assignments and tests, but they also get a chance to teach the students. This can give a student a totally new outlook on the jobs of their teachers. All in all this is a ded- icated club which can be relied on to carry out their daily duties. 120 purses Club FIRST ROW: Georgette Alafouzos, Jackie Fitzsimmons, Cindy Valverdi, Deb bie Degraff , Carol Murawski. These students are willing to give up a study hall or free period in order to take over some of the tasks that, other- wise , the office staff would have to perform. The most outstanding students involved are Sharon Kagabines, Martha Winter, and Paul Plum- mer. These people, along with many other dedicated office run- ners, are always reliable and eager to carry out their duties which made the job just a little easier for the office staff and administrators . This year our school band , color guards and twirlers under the supervi- sion and guidance of Mr. Ames and Mrs. Kelaher, had entertained the student body at assemblies, pep rallies, and football half- times. At Christmas the band put on a special con- cert for the school, which, to say the least, was fantas- tic. Mr. Ames made a jazz arrangement for the band to perform that was really entertaining. The result was the most successful assembly ever had at K . H . S . The objectives of these organizations, says Mr. Ames, is to involve stu- dents in an activity and to improve musicianship and coordination . Debbie Boyce was most outstanding twirler, as Mr. Ames depended on her to get the girls involved in twirling. The most out- standing band member was Ariel Schembri, who dedi- cated the most time to his instrument. Ariel will always be remembered for the way he livened up the cheerleaders' bus on the way home from the football games. To others it is a means of acquiring the skills to be of service to others. And then there is the philosophy that the development of man's mind is beneficial and necessary for the advancement of society as a whole. Education is not any one of these in isolation but a combination of all three. For no man's education can be his alone . His financial success, his ability to serve and his relationships with the rest of society all requires education. An enlightened society requires all men to be edu- cated in the need for survival of the species. Thus when we judge a man by his education, we must do so not by his titles and financial success and not by his individual kindnesses or lack of them but by his entire contribution to the advancement of the Homo sapien called man. Susan Laskay Graduation is the start of a new life. It opens up new worlds for all. . . . It is a time of great happi- ness, but also a time of sadness. Starting a new life means leaving old friends, family. Right now I would like to talk about some other people we leave. Other than our parents, these people have played the greatest part shaping our lives. These people are our teachers. They have all done their job well. They have shared their knowledge with us, and tried to teach us the dif- ference between right and wrong. Many of Keansburg's teachers fall into a special cat- egory. They are a new breed of teacher. A teacher who shares more with his students than what is expected of him. He shares himself. He opens his heart to them. and is there when a student needs to open his heart to someone. . . . Someone whom they can communicate with, whom they know they can trust for advice. . . . To the faculty of Keansburg High School, on behalf of the Class of 1975 , goodbye and thank you.
