Austin Goodwin ofthe Department ol' Fine Arts, The mace, carried by the College Marshal, IS made of rosewood. lt is live feet high and weighs fourteen pounds. Histoncally the mace was a weapon carried in battle by medieval bishops instead of a sword to conform to the canonical rule which forbade priesm to shed blood. Later it was used for protec- tion and became a symbol of power and a ceremonial object as well. The chain worn by the President is a symbol of this office, lt holds a large silver medallion, Each link ot' the chain is inscribed with the name and years of office ofa past president, Both the mace and chain bear the College seal enameled in blue on sterling silver. Well, some things never change, the old saying goes. Why does the Kean College yearbook always have to be delayed? I honestly don't know where to begin, but, I had only some background with the campus newspaper and no staff until the school year started. Out of all those people, very few did the work neces- sary to produce this yearbook. In the end, however, this yearbook had to be pro- duced and, as the editor, it was my duty to see that it was completed. As you look at the pages, you will observe that 1988 as a year of changes, not only how this yearbook looks, or how things are organized, but, I felt that we had to include things that have not been in any Kean college yearbook before. It is my hope that you like what you see and I hope you will be able to look back on your years as good times here at Kean college and say: Wow, I really changed a lot through college ....... In retrospect I would like to congratu- late the Class of 1988 by giving you the fruit of the staff's labors and mine. De- spite all ofthe problems, I did like this job, as it taught me many valuable lessons about myself.
