The Squires came to pre-season practice and were welcomed by Kean's new head coach Jim Hazlett. Clearly things were going to be different. Despite their 4-5 season. the Squires showed the other members of the New Jersey State College Athletic Conference that they will be a force to be reconed with in the future. Conference powers Trenton State. Monclair State, and Glassboro State all had to struggle to defeat the Squires. Kean picked up conference wins over Jersey City State 36-I4 and William Paterson 20I3 to finish the conference with a 2-4 mark. Defensively. the Squires were outstanding. The D was ranked tt! in the nation against the rush in the final NCAA Div. III stats. Led by captains Buck Buchanan and Thurm Wakefield. the defense kept the Squires in the maiority of their contest. All-Conference performers on the defense included Buchanan at linebacker. on the first team and defensive end Bob Conte on the second team. Also named to the second team defense was defensive tackle Lee Walden, Defensive end Ken Murphy and defensive back Andy Hoffman received honorable mention. The big story on offense was the play of Mike Askew. Askew. a former round ball star gave up the gridiron this year and the rest of the Squires are sure glad that he made that decision. Mike led the Squires in several offensive catagories including scoring C52 pointsb and kick returns with returns a 4l.5 average. For his efforts Mike was named to the All-Conference team. He was also named New Jersey player of the week by the New Jersey Football Writers. Led by the running of Askew and Ray Snake Goodridge. the Squires won 4 of their first 6 games. dropping St. John 20-7, William Paterson JOB. Brooklyn College 44-I3 and Jersey City State 36-I4. Kean lost three heartbreakers to Salisbury St. I3-7, Glassboro ST. lO-8 and Trenton St. 28-IJ to finish the year 4-5. In addition to the honors received by Askew, offensive tackle Matt Holway was named to All-Conference second team and Goodridge received honorable mention. Wide receiver Rod Dickerson was named to the ECAC Metro NYXNJ first team. Buchanan also received honorable mention on this team. With a majority of last years squad returning. Coach Hazlett and the Squires have no where to go but up. iv 915:- In the above picture the improved Kean offense sets up for a play. FI.. 'I :wa 1. A 4 Li.. Nu. . The team was at the hands of the eventual conference winner. Glassboro State whom the Squires lost to in a playoff for the conference crown. The Squires participated for the first time in the schooI's history in the NCAA Division Ill playoffs only to lose a I-O heartbreaker to Averett College of Virginia. The I8-6-3 Squire Express, led by the high scoring Ethnic Line of sophomore Bob Roche and juniors Chad Reiber and Bob Guimaraes, rolled through league competition with a I3-3-2 record. Reiber, Kean's scorer with 20 goals and 30 assists, and his line mates, together with outstanding goaltender Lou Nyitray and a veteran defensive corps guided Kean into the league's playoffs for the N 'fr-f E16 fourth time in their five year history. Only a late season injury to Roche and some questionable calls down the stretch stood between the Squires and a possible overall league title. Defensemen captain Ed Deresky, along with senior Dan Celiano and sophomore John Calise provided much of the punch for the Kean attack. Senior center Don The Count Gambardella, Mitch Edwards, senior winger and freshman Pat Pellegrino did the digging up front. Youngsters Greg Burgoyne, Mark Pica, Kevin Gertz, Mike McGrath and Mike Hackeny along with seasoned veterans Roger Oates, Jim Hofmann, Paul Adam, Rich Casey and Mark Cichowski all improved during the year and will all return next season as Coach O'Donnell and the Squires go for the MCHC league title. Led by senior Randy Byrd and sharpshooters Ron Jackson and Brett Walker, the Squires were constantly out manned and out sized by their opponents but always put out, a good sign for the future according to Palermo. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL I98O-SI The Kean College Women's Basketball team finished the seasor with an II-I4 record. While not quite up to par with the outstanding clubs of the past few years, Coach Pat Hannisch has to be pleased witl this rebuilding season. Led by the fine overall play of freshman Kathleen Starling anc seniors Karole Wallace and Angel Lombardi, the girls gave many of the areas bigger clubs a battle. Starling, who led the club in both scoring and rebounding leads the list of returnees for next season. Other players that saw a gooc deal of time during the year include guards Renne Perkins, Mary Tapp Allyson Scott and Debbie Hanna. Returning front line players include Jan Berry, Robyn Venner, Pat Malik, Terri Lisante and Shelly Blassingame. Injuries played a big part in the girls fortunes as Venner anc Blassingame missed a majority of the year. Hopefully the l98I-82 seasor will be a healthy and successful one. I . Ed Reiss, Art Boub, Larry Wilcox, Bob Woelpper and Mike Pysniak all gave a good account of themselves throughout the season and many of them should be back for more action next year. Due to the fact that student organization autonomy was threatened by several adverse situations, such as never before, we came to recognize it's value. I believe that with this recognition came as a strength and more importantly a unity of purpose, the mechanism which held the organization together during these periods were patience and determination, by those who were part of Student Organization. These times were tough, the functional services provided were not always the best, but they remained, and more importantly are here for improvement. Personally I have grown, and I have learned, I am thankful to those who helped me, for ultimately they helped the organization. Of greater significance thank-you to those who supported me, and believed in me, members of executive board, student council and funded groups members, student organization employees - Tom O'Donnell, Jane German, and Paul Hart. Mrs. Kortjohn, and Peggy McNaulty and the Dean of Students. Thanks to my parents and my professors who under- stood. Thanks to my best friend Kevin Perrine. For all of you who were the strength, that enabled me to grow, and to keep learning. Marcia Hamilton Respectfully , 2 xl K ssh. v Q. The' only experience I had was working on the I98O book, so I came into the position a novice. I began flipping through old yearbooks and noticed they all seemed to have the basic format. With this observation I decided that the I98I Memorabilia would have a humorous tone. The book is not intended to offend anyone, it is simply a light hearted look at the campus community. The usual pressures and complaints came with the job, but on a whole I can honestly say that I have grown from this experience. I enjoyed watching 288 blank pages turn into a yearbook. At times I felt like this was an impossible task but when I finally see the book in print form I will then realize that all those long hours were worth it. In closing I would just like to thank everyone associated with the l98l Memorabilia for their support, help, and comic relief because if it wasn't for all of you this experience would have meant nothing to me. Carlo, Harry, John, Jim, Pete, John, Kim, Jim, Patti, George, Jerry, Leeann, Charles, and Kim thank-you. Peter P. This is the office where energy and enthusiasm greet students as they come in for advice or help. The Townsend Lecture Committee meets here to plan programs that include such speakers as William Kunstler the Civil Rights lawyer, Barry Rosen the ex-hostage from lran, Dance performances, theatre productions such as, A Comedy of Errors , Mime. Jazz performers including Noel Pointer, and the popular mid-day shows and Coffeehouses in Sloan Lounge originate here. Gne of the most important things we do is to encourage and assist students to become involved in campus activities. Eagle Eye Shoebox, a one time Cheerios 5 yard sprint champ was quoted as saying, I love the decoding rings we get with every pair of P.F. Fliers.
