b These things shall be— a loftier race Than e ' er the world hath known shall rise With flame of freedom in their would, And light of knowledge in their eyes. —John Addington Symonds It is at this time that acquaintances have become friends and instructors guiding lights. The KNOWL- EDGE that they have so fervently expounded has ac- cumulated into a foundation of understanding and appreciation. Upon this base we must continue to construct a sounder framework that shall extend the heritage of knowledge to those we educate. 12

■ EUGENE G. WILKINS President B.A., North Texas State College; M.A. Ph.D., Columbia University. and TO THE CLASS OF 1960 The years grow short as college days blend into your professional careers. We hurriedly try to tell you all we would wish you to know about this splendid work of being a teacher. But there is so much to say that we stand speechless as on a train platform waiting for friends to depart, all the while making small talk when we know there are great and important things to be said. And yet we should know our telling you will never make you realize the excitement and love of teaching— only experience can do that, not always the initial experience but that which comes from a span long enough to give pers ' pectivs. The Class of ' 60 is one of transition. You have seen your alma mater emerge from the cacoon-like housing on the old campus and spread its multi-colored wings on the new campus larger by more than a hundred fold. It is the new tradition that you carry forth as graduates. May all success and peace be yours. Sincerely yours, Eugene G. Wilkins President Z
