Panther 70 Published by The Class of 1970 Warren F. Kaynor Regional Technical School Waterbury, Conn. Volume 13 Foreword All can he proud of the yearbook which we have created. The staff and I feel, however, that the yearbook can never fully contain all the cherished memories and fond moments spent in our four years at Kaynor. Keeping this in mind, we have tried to capture a small part of all our memories in this book. Our last year was a most productive one. There were many events and happenings which held most of our attention and took most of our time. My staff and I are proud to have been given the opportunity to create something which we can truly call our own, the 1970 Panther. A word of thanks should go to the many people who worked long hours to bring this book to fruition. Thank You, SUSAN E. DUBAY Editor-in-Chief JOSEPH F. MURPHY RICHARD W. HOWES As the class of 1970 faces its farewell to the high school where it has received special education and training for the World of Work, you will detect a feeling that your specialized knowledge is greatly needed in our Connecticut industry and business. The Connecticut Yankee is generally thought of as an outstanding mechanic and person. It is hoped that each class member will continue to do his part to maintain this reputation. Sincerely yours, Richard W. Howes, Assistant Director Division of Vocational Education TO THE CLASS OF '70 Congratulations to the members of the graduating class of 1970 for successfully completing an arduous program of education. You have had an excellent opportunity to prepare yourself to meet the future for serv- ices to your community and services to the State. I know that you will enter your life ahead well prepared and I am assured of your continued growth and success. Sincerely yours, Joseph F. Murphy, Director Division of Vocational Education 3 The decade of the 1970’s has already elicited a plethora of forecasts regarding the young, the old, the environment, the space program, the economy. Allow me then to project some thoughts about the Class of '70. — Most of you will find fulfillment in doing your work the best you can, and in marrying and raising families. — You will contribute towards preserving the greatness of America, defying the crepe- hangers. — You will find ways to help reduce injustice and poverty wherever it exists. — You will remind others by your example that good craftsmanship lends greater dignity to all human efforts, with more benefits to so- ciety. Your teachers have worked hard to help you learn. Their reward will be in seeing the spirit of learning and doing along with good citizen- ship and moral progress, increasingly evident in your lives. That is craftsmanship of the highest order. JOHN L. ROSSI Director To The Class of 1970: Goodbye. Your days at Kaynor will long be remembered. I hope that the world you entered on June 17 will be as concerned, protective, patient, and proud of your efforts as were your instructors at Kaynor Tech. JOHN J. MILLS Assistant Director 4 Responsibility and participation arc as much a part of adulthood as books, teachers and study arc of adolescence. At the same time that you are congratu- lated for the knowledge and skills acquired while at Kaynor, you should feel challeneged by the responsibilities of adulthood. Your value to man will be measured not by what you know but rather how efficiently you aid a world seeking peace and understanding. Adulthood demands continued growth, humility, and a willingness to use your re- sources to help make our world a better home for tomorrow’s youth. I thank the Class of 70 for the experi- ences you have shared with me and wish you success and happiness in the future. DANIF.L J. KEEFE Guidance Counselor TO THE CLASS OF 1970: I do not have fear of our youth. They will come through. You have been taught in our classrooms— how to think—not what to think. You have developed for yourselves a sense of values, having gained a balance between idealism and realism. You have been motivated by high moral codes and honesty of purpose. In short, you young men and women of the graduating class have the resourcefulness that will help you to face and cope with whatever emergency arises. Congratulations! BORIS V. DUKELEY Director, Evening Division 5 MR. LOUIS RICCIUTI MR. RONALD TABELLIONE Dedication We would like to dedicate the yearbook of the Class of 1970 to our advisers. When we entered the school in September of 1966, both of our advisers entered with us. They have given us their last ounce of devotion. We are grateful. In September of 1966 most of us entered the school. A small group came one year later, and some people even started in 1965. There were about 170 freshmen in 1966 and we now number approximately 114. Our first year was demanding and eventful. We jumped into our school work energetically, but by the year’s end Math and Science had reduced our ranks to about 145. In athletics two members of our class led the basketball team to a successful season. At the beginning of our Sophomore year we organized as a class for the first time. We elected David Sullivan as President of our Class. We now spent half of our time in our shops and the remainder in Related and General Education. Our athletic teams were fair. However, the basketball team made the state CIAC tournament for the first time in history. We held a few cake sales and a dance to raise money for our later activities. At year’s end we numbered about 135. As Juniors we began to plan the year's biggest event—the Junior Prom. The three athletic teams all played well and the basketball team made the CIAC tournament once again. David Sullivan was re-elected President of the class. The prom was held in the school gymnasium on May 23, 1969. Our senior year started and we numbered about 120. Anthony Durso was elected President of our Class. The year was played out in the age of protest. College buildings were being occupied and ravaged by stu- dents. At Kaynor there was a mild protest over the dress code. Modifica- tions were made in it after students claimed it was their right to dress and cut their hair as they pleased. In athletics the school had winning records in all three major sports for the first time. In addition a fourth athletic team—track was added. The yearbook staff moved ahead with its job and the class play failed because of student apathy. The Class trip was made to Ocean Beach Park in late May. Our Senior Prom was held at the Fountain Hearth in Woodbury, and we received our diplomas on June 17, 1970. We left Kaynor immediately to conquer the world of work. 16 Vice-President RUSSELL MILES President ANTHONY DURSO Class Officers Secretary ANITA DERIENZO Treasurer MICHAEL DIOGOSTINE JAMES AHRENS Electronics Waterbury MICHAEL P.
