H if A15-454' - by W' fr ,.-ol 15 rv N Qf-Q' V V, Z ' 1 S o Z 1 f 8 Q ' f -M z . . , A Q , , Q' 'JS 2 Q P . 3 f u 3 C Q f 1 1 N 9 " 0' 5 fi 'firqv ox fp, - XX fi, L XNN 'ff ul 'fmmnii ff 1 .Q i uss. kawishiwi iao-146 .K captain donald b. edge, usn commanding officer r commander joe m. james, usn executive officer t 'gt-:Q ' " x ship commissioned: july 1955 homeported pearl harbor, hawaii uss kawishiwi fao-H65 is fourth of a group of six sister ships of the neosho class commonly known as navy super oilers. kawishiwi is one of three of this class of fleet ollers which serve in the pacific fleet. all navv oilers are named for united states rivers that bear american indian names. kawishiwi is named after the river of that name which is located in the extreme northeastern portion of the state of minnesota. the indian word kawishiwi means 'triver full of beavers houses." kawishiwi was built by the new york shipbuilding com- pany of Camden, new jersey. she was commissioned in the u.s. navy on 6 july 1955. kawishiwi has an over-all length of 656 feet, beam of 83 feet, and a liquid cargo capa- city in excess of 7,000,000 gallons. kawishiwi, a unit of the service force, u.s. pacific fleet, is designed for high speed replenishnent at sea of the fuel needs of todayis farfflung fleets. naval ships are required to stay at sea for longer periods than other kinds of ships. the mobility and freedom ofmovement of these ships depend on many factors, but more often than not they are influ- enced by the ability to refuel and replenish supplies at sea. refueling other ships at sea is the major purpose of the Hcetioilers. just as the main battery of a cruiser is her guns and missiles, and the main battery ofan aircraft carrier is her aircraft, the main battery ofthe fleet oiler is her ability to conduct fueling operations at sea under almost any circumstances or weather conditions. the highly specialized evolution of underway replenishment can be carried on duringf the daylight hours or under cover of night. the process is not limited to the transfer of petroleum products. it can- and docs provide the capability of transferring to receiving ships cargo, mail, passengers, and provisions, all while steaming toward their objective. lcawishiwi is home ported at pearl harbor, hawaii. periodically, she deploys to the western pacific, where she performs her underway replenishment misson as a unit of the u.s. seventh fleet. i.. ll i V, R .4 . 2 , L K . Lx w - .A ix ff a rigs' ,V I W , r 'WV 1,-l:f':4z -, NE-'J R' V ,' V, ' . , , - . qw-. . .,,,x,-x " v' ' If , j hi-22-g j . hw 5.9. w captain donald b. edge-was born on 23 march 1922 in laverne, iowa. he attended high school and junior college in emmetsburg, iowa before enrolling in kemper military school, boonville, missouri, where he X 4 graduated in 1941. capt edge entered the united states naval academy in july 1941, and was commissioned an ensign, u.s. navy in june of 1944. prior to flight training he served in uss canberra and uss rnontpelier within the gunnery and navigation departments. he won his navy wings injune 1947 and was subsequently attached to va-94. he returned to pensacola as a flight instructor in january 1950, remaining for two years. he reported to vc-3 in march 1952, and during the korean action he deployed in uss philipine sea and later in uss hornet. in july 1955 he reported to the university of nebraska as an associate professor, and taught naval science through june 1958. he attended postgraduate school at stanford university attaining a master of arts degree in june 1959. he has been executive and commanding officer ofvf-213. september 1963 marked the completion of two years duty in uss bon homme richard as air operations ollicer. from march 1964 to 1965 he was commanding ofhcer of cvw-14. Following this duty he served on the joint staff of the joint chiefs of staff until january 1967 when he reported for duty as commanding officer, uss kawishiwi Qao-1461.
