Conference championship by virtue of their 5-1 record. Ably assisted by backfield coach Fred Barri- beau and line coach Asher Shorey, Krumm formed the aspiring gridders around a mainstay of three veterans. Headed by co-captain and guard Dave Zwick, rugged 235 pound guard Dave Stuiber, and end Ken Roloff, the Ghosts were steadily molded into a still unsteady grid machine. Worst hit by graduation had been the back- field. The big job was to find a competent runner and passer to fill the left-half spot vacated by Pat- trick Stan Lehman. The answer showed itself when two gold dust twins, Rich Giordana and Gene Noonan showed up well in practice. Blocking back John Moose Noonen filled an- other of Coach Krumm's worries. With Robert Stan Whitman running from the fullback slot and alternating with dependable, hard-hitting, co-captain Francis Gerow, right-half William Taylor, Krumm completed his backfield. Line backer and reserve fullback Joe Nieuwen- huis, a stocky guard, Clarence Corky Smith, guard John Hermans, tackle Clarence Barney' Lamers, center Lee Freier and reserve line back- er, Dick Otte rounded out the team. At times, sheer determination, as in the Clin- tonville game, was the determining factor in vic- tory for the Ghosts. When the final horn sounded, the score read 7-6, in favor of the team which didn't believe what it had read in the papers. The Ghosts' U50-51 season opened when they travelled to Sheboygan North to meet the highly rated Fox River Valley Conference school. Rated as underdogs, the Galloping Ghosts play- ed heads up ball, and pulled through with a stir- ring 14-7 victory. The following week the Galloping Ghosts play- ed their first conference game when Shawano travelled to meet the Kaws on their home field. The inspired Shawano Indians, surged ahead to a 12-7 victory. Travelling to New London a week later, a jit- tery crew of Ghosts played a poor brand of ball Dave Zwick, captain Bob Whitman Guard Fullback Dave Huss Clarence Smith End Guard Bill Taylor John Noonan Halfback Quarterback Page 58 The Champs in the first half, found themselves in the second stanza and managed to roll up a 32-6 score while using mainly reserve strength in the second half. In winning their homecoming game with Men- asha, 18-6, the powerful Ghosts' offense rolled up 260 yards against Menasha's 148. By this time, the Clintonville Truckers had been termed by Clintonville the finest team Clin- tonville had fielded in the history of the school. Clintonville was rated as high as a 20-30 point favorite over the Galloping Ghosts. But the Ghosts playing a slam-bang, flawless game, came from behind to nip the Truckers 7-6. The all important point after the touchdown was converted by co-captain, Francis Gerow. Sophomore left-half, Gene Noonen and Rich Giordana, proved to be main dogs in the Kaws offense. Powerful line plunges by fullback, Stan Whitman, enabled the team to stall the ball in the final minutes. On defense, stocky John Noonan, line backer, lineman Barney Lamers, co-captain, Dave Zwick, Clarence Corky Smith, and Dave Stuiber along with ends, Ken Roloff, and Dave Huss, sparked the Kaws to victory. In the last two games of the season. the Ghosts scored 45 points to their opponents, 12. Travelling to Neenah, the Galloping Ghosts again came from behind to trim the Rockets 20-6. In the last game of the season the Kaws gal- loped all over Two Rivers, running up a total of 16 first downs to Two Rivers 3. The final score was 25-6. A fitting climax to the successful season came when co-captain Dave Zwick, guard Dave Stuiber. and hard-luck center, Lee Freier, were named to the N.E.W. Dream Team. Representatives on the second squad were end, Ken Roloff, and fullback and defensive end, Stan Whitman. Honorable mention went to stalwart tackle Clarence Barney Lamers and left-half, Rich Giordana. For the first time in the history of the school 3 co-captains were named to head the H51-52 team. They were Rich Giordana, Clarence Corky Smith and Bob Stan Whitman.
