About one hundred miles from earth stands the invisible and rather arbitrary boundary where the earth's atmosphere ends and the vast reaches of airless space be- gin. Space has always contained the whirling planetsg the blue and yellow, white and red stars, gas and dust, meteorites, asteroids and radiation. Today it contains one more--the work of man. In 1958 the national Aeronautics and Space Administration was born. An act of Congress authorized this new agency to direct all aeronautics and space activities. Thus a new era was born, which will eventually lead to a completely new way of life. It is just a matter of a few years until we will have explored the moon and from there a short step to further space travel to other planets. The purpose of Kaufman High School is to offer an educational program that will motivate the students to acquire the tools of learning and the basic skills and attitudes essential to functioning in this modern space age society. It is my sincere hope that each of you will do everything possible to become pre- pared through education to meet the challenge of this new space age way of life. Sincerely, zu 25? 712223640416 W. B.
